The Duke is still alive, teaser incoming

How exactly are we supposed to gauge gameplay from a teaser that shows nothing but graphics? I think it goes without saying graphics are what pretty much everyone is going to be discussing.

What I said before still stands true. Duke Nukem 3D was a fine game, but don't be naive and think that means this one will also be as innovative and fun as its predecessor. As I said, we've had dozens upon dozens of alien ass kicking games since then that've innovated in many ways. It's going to be very hard for Duke to stand out.

I am sceptical, but hopeful. To actually live up to Duke Nukem 3D is a huge challenge, but it's also now got to live up to 10 years of hype and all the other superb alien ass kicking games that've come out (and were probably inspired by Duke 3D).

So what engine does it use then? Looks just like U3 in my eyes.

according to Quakis it uses an extremely altered version of the Unreal Engine.

i think what Thrik said in his last post was pretty valid. hoewever, like probably most of the oldskool fanbase, i dont give a flying rat about next gen graphix and dx10 fx. i just want to play duke nukem and kick some ass in duke style. i dont think its too hard to create a game that, gameplay wise, honors duke3d. im not expecting fireworks, just a cool game. the rest of the joy lies by myself and the remiscant feeling i get when shrinking lapd pigs and beating flying reptiles.

and as far as the ''cool game'' part, looking at the first 2 trailers, i see alot of fun gameplay and original settings and characters so i might not be as sceptical as the lot of you.

Duke Nukem Forever history breakdown, really cool read!

May 29, 2003: Take-Two CEO Jeffrey Lupin informs reporters that Duke Nukem Forever will not be out by the end of 2003. Broussard fires back shortly after, reminding readers that DNF remains self-funded, while also issuing a famously stiff rebuttal to its publisher: "Take Two needs to STFU imo." The spate makes national news, including a story on CNN.

    Quote from Quakis

Wish people would stop mentioning Unreal Engine 3 or Doom 3 Engine since it uses niether...

Yet it uses modified (obviously) U3 tech?

    From Wikipedia:

"Broussard has stated several times that the only parts of the Unreal engine that are still part of their code base are UnrealScript, the networking code, and the UnrealEd. Everything else (except Meqon, the physics engine) has been written from scratch by 3D Realms."

Interview with Scott Miller on YouGames: (here)

    Quote

DNF is also famous for its use of engines but the truth on the matter is:Scott: We started with the Quake engine, but within six or so months we switched to the Unreal engine. However, I’m reminded of the story about the man who claimed to own the axe that George Washington used to chop down the cherry tree. The man said, “Yeah, it’s the same axe alright, but the head and handle have both been replaced a few times over the last 200 years of use.” The same applies with the Unreal engine we licensed so long ago.

Duke Nukem Forever does NOT use the Doom 3 Engine: (Source)

Some more quotes from George Broussard from duke4.net

    Quote

Will you switch to Unreal 3 engine for DNF?No. Its a fantastic looking engine, but we want to finish on what we have.

Have you had trouble regarding Dynamic Lights with Unreal 2's renderer?

Our rendering is 100% different than Unreal 2. We wrote our own.

"Unreal. I believe we branched off somewhere around the Unreal 2 time when they added static meshes. Since then we've redone the rendering 100% and it's a fully modern engine."

As long as they have 2D sprite strippers I'll buy it.

I think I spent more time in the stripper bar than any other place in the entire game.

Less than six years of silence, not ten.

Team Fortress 2 was announced around the same time, and was released a few months ago. I haven't seen half as many complaints about it as there are here.

Duke looked a bit different, but everything in the trailer looked very good to me.

... Of course, I'm by no means surprised by the negative feedback around here........

Wiki states that it is running on a heavily modified UT2 engine.

Quote from Probably a load of bullshit from Wiki

The engine, which now contains parts of an early version of Unreal Engine 2.0 (the team branched off from the engine in 2001) supports such features as pixel shading, normal mapping and high dynamic range based lighting.[16][17]Broussard has stated several times that the only parts of the Unreal engine that are still part of their code base are UnrealScript, the networking code, and the UnrealEd. Everything else (except Meqon, the physics engine) has been written from scratch by 3D Realms. The principal technical reason given by Broussard for the extensive delays was the unstable tech base. Once it was stabilized, 3D Realms expanded their team considerably, from 22 to 31 members.

I dont really care if the graphics are good or not, thats not what duke is about.

That's what most games are about nowadays, if you're game doesn't have nice graphics, you're a goner.

it was ok, but I had more enjoyment watching the 2001 trailer again than watching the 2007 one.

... they should have just made a post convincing us to watch the 2001 one again.

Yeah, that old trailer was incredible in its day. A lot of the stuff shown hadn't even really been seen in such a cool way, while now loads of other games have either copied what they saw there or done their own innovations.

That's why I'm so worried about the gameplay. It's almost like what nearly happened to TF2 (if Valve had continued working on the original plan it'd have essentially been a small-scale Battlefield 2, which would have failed to stand out and sank).

I find it hilarious that the same game everyone would be laughing at prior to this announcement with a comment like, "lol this game's never coming out" suddenly turns around and are so defensive about it. Even more so that many of you seem to be going entirely off faith in the gameplay, which was not even shown. Guess there's hope for this game after all, even if it is sick and twisted.

Don't get me wrong, the trailer has me excited just because Duke has come into light again, but my pants aren't exactly tightening...

i'm not really excited for the title other than seeing the duke in action once again; i am more interested in the actual effect (if any) on games by companies that said that dnf would come out before a came out. it's more the fact that you cannot use the term anymore than anything else. like if hell froze over... which actually happened:
