Well I'll belooking forward to this, if you can capture the feeling, atmosphere and design like SH2/3 then that'd would be even better.

Taylor: If it was a personal joke to d3ads and my post sounded a bit harsh, I apologise - I just jump on people bashing old tech too easily.

As for the scale, Sink should be just above waist height, Windows should be above elbow height.

The biggest HL1 mods still have a reasonable player base, but not many of those are realistically going to try out new mods. They most probably continue playing the mods out of habit and aren't even aware of the engine's community outside those mods.

Using the health of CS as an argument for continuing HL1 mapping is pretty mental. I'm sure D3 used to want to work in the games industry, and I can't see many companies giving two shits about some HL1 engine work these days. That is because no matter how good you are, it looks old and unimpressive. That goes for every single HL1 mod bar none, and I include Nightwatch and Paranoia in that statement.

If D3 is happy indefinitely producing content for a relatively small fan audience then that's fine. If he actually wants to go through with the plans he shared years ago of working in the games industry it might be an idea to take a couple of steps further forward than he was at in 2003. Because you know what? It's four years later and I still can't think of anything notable he's produced, nor do I see him being any closer to doing it for a living.

Sorry to be harsh d3, but it does genuinely sadden me as I watch the months pour away and you seemingly accomplish absolutely nothing, despite still seemingly wanting to do this professionally. You seriously need to move onto newer technology and become passionate about newer technology if you want a hope in hell of getting that job.

and what new technology are you talking about? Crysis? Battlefield 2, U3?

cant you see the level d3 is still on? Half life 1, he is still here on that level. Do you think it is better to move on a new technology when he already got problems with the old technology. I just want to say that; it is like a pyramide, if u can not do it right from the start, why climb up?

if he missed his boat, fine, he did. but nothing does not prevent him to climb higher.. of course switching to a newer engine is better because as you understand it is new. But it depends on d3

D3ads: As one of RUST brothers, I will tell you no lie man. But I honestly think it would be wise for you to move on. I used to be the same with Kingpin, as you know. It was crazy to the point where original KP developers told me to move on and try new technology. The thing that you probably understood already is that with more time spent making maps you become limited with older engines. You can no longer create those cool areas or gameplay ideas due to poly, light and other limitations. Spend a month, but do make that jump to HL2. It's no longer those days when we had to figure out editor on our own, now there are so many tutorials that it wouldn't take you long to jump on the band wagon. Especially if you want to do that professionally, like Thrik mentioned.

Plus switching to newer technology with less limitations, opens you up and helps you grow in skill drastically.

Some NS maps still impress me. But yeah, the source engine is way cooler. You'll get stuff done faster working on it, and you have more possibilities.

The way I see it if you want to get into the games industry is to start working with the newer tech now before it's too late. But that doesn't mean dropping the old engines either if you enjoy working with them for small "for fun" projects.

I'm not particuallary 100% interested in working in the games industry, but there is somewhat some interest - therefore these days, almost every day I try to improve my skills working with the newer stuff.

When the day comes to get an up to date system I'd probably start working with UE3 - not sure - but at the same time I work with the Build engine for my other projects in my spare time, for fun and reletively (sp?) simple to get the results I want.

Either way, I see no problems working with older tech - ofcourse =p
