I'm still using VHE 3.4 (very stable / no errors ever!) to make HL and Q1 maps. pure quality

I thing gtk radiant was also very easy but worldcraft 1.6 was the easiest one

hammer with implementation to steam is a junk, the steam system sux - i prefer go to shop and buy 'real' game with box, cd etc... also the sdk is the biggest mistake made by valve. steam was made to protect from making illegal copies of the game and what? non-steam copies from p2p are more stable that original ones form shop... that is ridical...

quake engine and the modification made for hl1 was pure in it's construction but no - valve had to make own system with weird security systems... directory structure is one of the worse ohh steam have a lot of shit in it... i dont have time to write about it - everyone knows good what is very anoing...

I bet Mike's "testing" involves 2 kegs of beer and a blindfold.

can we get some specs from people this had fully worked for?

I don't think its specs related, heres mine:

    Alt0hlon XP 2800+, Socket A

    1gig DDR1 Ram, PC3200

    Radeon X1350 512mb, AGP

    =(

    I'm taking donations.

Apparently the issue with the lighting preview not working properly is because of something with the new shaders not being included/used in the SDK. I can get it working if there's no textures loaded for the map(i.e: load up the Portal example map under the TF2 mode).

I have that error when I try to add mods to the orange sdk.

Light preview makes most stuff black, 3d raycast rendering doesn;t seem to work, or its barely using my cpu

I get that error when I open CS:S only... but i think it's cause i opened hammer in css config before renaming the directories. At any rate my lighting preview does the same thing after getting the latest drivers etc. same for raycast.

i hope i dont have to upgrade my x800pro to map for hl2!

*edit* hey that portal map in tf2 thing worked so im a little happier.. but still sad i cant actually use it. It's like falling in love on the internet.

I doubt Mike gets an army of testers and it seems that (pre-release) beta SDK rollouts have been permanently canned. Ever since Steam arrived Valve has been fairly lax about releasing well-tested SDK updates, partly because they potentially have the ability to fix whatever they break without delay. Unfortunately, "potentially" is the operative word. It's a pain in the ass when Hammer breaks, but I guess it goes with the territory these days. If we want the new engine stuff, Valve has to update the SDK & Source SDK Base stuff and we just have to deal with the problems that go with it.

Anyone remember the Hammer update that would close your map without warning when editing displacements? It went unfixed for months. That was good stuff. Various other things remain unfixed; namely over-brightened specular reflections in the 3d viewport and broken overlays in the 3d shaded viewport.

Could be worse I guess. We could have no SDK / Hammer updates

So basically its back to making textures and models for a month or two while Valve sorts out the mess?

Actually think I'll make a nice 1.6 xmas themed map

Here's a fix guys and should work. Right click on source SDK in steam then go to properties, then click set launch options then just paste in "-engine ep1" no quotes. This should let you edit hl2 maps at least which is what i am doing.

I have updated the known issues list for the new SDK release on the VDC wiki which you can see here:http://developer.valvesoftware.com/w...t_Known_Issues

I'm going to try to get the cubemap problem, the missing models and textures, and the %VPROJECT% problem fixed in a release today. More than likely I will temporarily disable the Lighting Preview modes in that release until we can coordinate the fix for those problems. But it will come back.

Thanks very much for your patience while we get these problems sorted out.

Same thing we used to do for Dark Messiah, only I haven't seen the lighting preview work since then

The only thing I need is to build the cubemaps really. Now that vrad takes much less time to compile, I couldn't care less whether we ever see the lighting preview again.

Why the hell I can't find the option to use this preview? I have all Orange box games installed and Source SDK updated but there's no such option in Hammer. Do I need to do something else?

In the latest update, lightning preview have been disabled until a working fix has been made. As the update says:

Temporarily disabled Hammer Lighting preview modes until compatibility issues can addressed
