It seems the copy protection on this game is super, theres no scene release yet which is kind of weird.

    It's a question of few days ;x

And yet the fact remains that theres no scene release out.

I just watched Bioshock behind the scenes where they talked a lot about the different iterations of the game and just random bullshit they went through during development, its worth seeing if you are really into the game. There were a couple of things that bothered me tho. One was when the producer (a girl) started talking about the game, and I felt like I wanted to kill her, but I don't really know why, might be because she seemed to be so stupid.. What is a producer anyways? The other thing was at the end when their sound people(a girl) started talking about, duh, their sound and like she said like the word like, like in like in between like every like other like word.

Actually i think the exact contrary, why would i buy a game that give me an insecure and complicated activation process, rather than getting a version free of all that jizz. Let's say i want to play Bioshock in 5 years, with the repeated installations and uninstallations during 5 years don't you think i'll have already lost my 2 activations ? Then goes the hard process of emailing/phoning the companies which will redirect me to the other and so on, or even better.... tell me to buy another copy of Bioshock. ;x

I don't think i'll buy the game, several friends and me included wanted to do it at first because holy shit, games like that have to be supported, but i don't want to support such a constraining activation system. Because if i do, i'll be the real moron in the story.. and for the next coming years ..

Harsh words, but I think he got a point. 2K is working on the issues.

Kick back and chill out ppl, you'll get to play it one way or another and most likely enjoy it

It would be too easy to say that i'm upset by an ephemere disappointment, i'm not even that excited about it actually, it's the commercial stunt i denounce. When i spend my money to buy a game, i want to be able to play it all my life

God, the guy who made the widescreen hack is getting a free GeForce 8800 for it.

But yeah, I totally agree with the essence of that post. The whole thing is getting totally overblown, and in all honesty I bet the majority of those bitching about it wouldn't have had any problems even if they did buy it legally on the PC.

While these copyright things are kind of suspicious, it's not hard to blame them for trying to fight back when people have been flagrantly pirating the absolute fuck out of PC games for years.

These people who say they're only pirating to make a stand against the copyright stuff? Absolute bollocks. They pirate anyway, and have done for years. The only reason the companies are taking more drastic measures is because their software is getting thrown all over BitTorrent hours after release.

What about the guy who did the SM2 hack? He will probably get sued by Nvidia for making so many people not buy a new gfx card.

    Haha.

This is a pretty good review, BTW:

    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/games/a- ... oshock.ars

Pretty much sums up how I feel about the game and its beautiful atmosphere. I really loved the intro where you have this huge entrance in the middle of the sea; reminded me of the way into the underwater template in Zelda: Wind Waker.

The premise, concept and execution is in general coolness squared.

And even with these drastic measures, the games still get thrown all over BitTorrent hours after a release. So far the record for longest time between retail release and scene release is Splinter Cell Chaos Theory with 422 days using StarForce 3. On that 422nd day, the release came with reverse engineering instructions for the entire StarForce 3 framework, rendering it useless.

The only thing the protection does is prevent legitimate users from enjoying the product that they paid for. Rather than get a product that installs out of the box and they can play in a matter of minutes, they get something that is crippled with DRM (in the case of this version of securom, something that irreversibly modifies the system registry without telling you). The choice is between paying for something that fucks with your computer and probably wont work, or getting something that doesn't and is free.

I buy my games because the dev's need (and in most cases, deserve) the money, but I usually don't buy it until there has been a crackfix that removes the DRM from the game because I don't want that shit on my PC. Of course, there are unobtrusive forms of DRM, like Steam or earlier versions of Securom that didn't do anything like what it's doing now.

I bought the game on Steam. The reason I bought it on steam was beause I thought Securom would be removed since Steam uses it's own DRM scheme. I'm not going to play the steam version, but I'm going to play the pirated version because it doesn't fuck with my registry without telling me.

I paid for the game, it should play where I want when I want. The retail version doesn't do that, but the pirated version does.

Now I just have to ask: Does pirating a game I already bought make me a bad person?

    Display More

422 days is a lot of sales

and "Does pirating a game I already bought make me a bad person?" not according to me, accept "supporting" the groups who provide the shit. But still, you bought the game, then morally you shouldn't give a crap. Same goes for music, if I bough a CD, I should be able to download it, cause it's faster then ripping it.

Maybe ripping a CD is also illegal, but I don't give a fuck, I just want to listen to the music/play the gane U bought...w/e

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating the invasive protection at all. I'm just commenting on the fact that I think PC publishers have been pushed into a particularly tight spot due to the rampant piracy, which is far more widespread than it is for consoles.

It seems so bad to me that the people who green light the funds could very well be demanding that protection be included, or they just won't support a PC release as they don't want to take the risk of swimming in the El Warez Resort's pool.

While I think the protection absolutely needs to be pushed back, I also think consumers need to in general stop being absolute knob heads and warezing games they could easily get a demo for and then buy if they like the demo. It's those fuckers who've forced these funders' hands, and have ultimately gotten this shit rained on us -- not the publishers themselves.

Last I heard the music industry was in a lot of trouble financially, which might seem insane but I'm pretty sure I read this is true and there was evidence backing it up. However, they also tried the aggressive DRM and got so much consumer backlash they had to retract it.

The same will probably happen for games, especially considering the huge press BioShock's has gotten, but the fact remains it's hurting the PC platform. Maybe someone knows more about this than me, but I really think it's likely publishers/funders would prefer to just not release on the PC at all and focus on the PS3/360, where warez is infinitely less prevalent.

That sucks for any PC gamer. Anyone who frequently downloads warez should be ashamed.

I guess I'll stop buying games, and rather send the development company 40$ or whatever. It will give them more money than what it would if they only get a share from the publisher who is already stuffed with money.

But it'll be the publisher who sees their income fall, and make the decision to stop supporting development for PC games altogether.

By all means though, if you want to see them making games for consoles only then that strategy would be fine if everyone did it.

As I feel it is, all the games I care about or even have a slight interest for, are often just console to pc ports anyway, which aren't worth the money at all. Last game I got was R6: Vegas, and I want my money back.

I haven't yet seen a promising game that is PC only, have you? (Stalker: Clear Sky is probably the only one, but it's an expansion, doesn't count)

Note; I don't play MMOs, so they are out of the picture.

I'm sick of all the dumb'd down huds, interfaces and such, I want a game that works great for PC, and rather be crappier on a console. Which aint gonna happen, cause consoles have the majority of the market.

Publishers are too greedy, when games are released (Bioshock for instance), with lacking support of SM2 cards and WS, which the community has to fix (and it doesn't take more than a few days!!!!), that makes the publishers automatically suck for not giving them the extra week needed to fix things like that.

Sorry to go against the grain and all, but I played through the opening section of this today and I don’t really understand the 95% BEST GAME EVER MADE EVER reviews. Sure it looks really amazing, but when I got going I was disappointed.

Ex: My plane crashes, I travel down a nondescript lift to the bottom of the ocean to a derelict sea base, I watch someone get murdered, I find a needle on a wall and without skipping a beat I jam it into my wrist to harness the power of lightning. What?

I'll stick with it, though! Because I have nothing better to do with my time.

Hehe, that bit kinda confused me too Taylor. I mean, all they really needed to do was have Atlas encourage you to use it or something. Just having your character jab himself with the thing without any hesitation or explanation was a bit...WTF

Stolve, I don't really see why you think console to PC ports "aren't worth the money at all", as if the intention of the developers to target consoles first somehow undermines their merit as games. I agree some ports aren't the best and that sucks, but just because they ARE ports doesn't mean they aren't deserving of your money, nor does it give you legitimate reason to pirate them. Oh and Crysis, Hellgate: London, and World in Conflict - there's 3 promising PC only titles. I'm sure there's plenty more out there, but I'm kinda more one of those console guys that is, admittedly, better catered for
