Very nice looking, Reno, and Bluestrike also (although I found getting around your map quite awkward!).

I might actually make the deadline afterall...all the rock displacements took less time than I had feared! I'll probably have the displacement work done by the end of tomorrow and then I can work on lighting and props, and finally weapon placement.

Sorry to link huge images but I can't upload to imageshack, and its easiest for me to link straight to the images from my FTP.

Looks very interesting merkaba, want to try that out when you release it.

As for Reno, lovely lighting theme, really looks like a promising level.

only thing i dont like in merkaba's map is the upper rock texture.

Thanks for the compliments guys, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. No points for originality though eh - this sort of theme is what HL2 was made for really No harm in working to something's strengths though, I say Respect to those that are trying something a bit more out there with HL2's standard assets alone.

Merkaba: Looking pretty crazy! Like Mkz, I'm not keen on the rock texture you've used on the upper sections - I think keeping it consistent with the lower rocks would look better. Those stairs alude to the inclusion of some human made elements - anything extra coming on that front (or hidden away in those screenshots)?

That is something I have not yet decided on. I quite enjoy oddities such as man-made steps in an otherwise remote and natural environment (I mean, hell, you're running around firing guns at each other in an isolated swiss-rock tower - is an extra stretch of the imagination really that hard? )

I think the worst thing I could do is try and make it like it's a plausible real place, because that is just impossible and it would feel mega-artificial. I'm all for pushing the 'fantasy' aspect, though.

Re: the rock, unfortunately HL2 doesn't include the right mix of blend textures that I need for this map. I was hoping to get two blend textures that use the same rock, but one with grass as the 2nd tex and the other with dirt, but there are no such combinations. Also, I really like the look of the green rock, but I also require some grass because it looks quite nice.

The change in rock texture is not so ugly when actually in the map, and offers a nice visual diversity besides. The same rock style everywhere looked a bit repetetive

I got 2-1 on Reno winning this

Good lookin map, but those barrels together on the slope could get in the way. Still, love the feel of the map so far.

Looking cool Bluestrike, another map that kinda reminds me of Halo in its style and architecture. How do you get around though? You said you had planned on using a conveyor but ended up with something else, but I can't see that many linking routes. Lots of ladders, or jump pads or something that are hard to notice?

The transport system is still there (2 lines with eatch 2 'trains' on it)

its the only way to get to the top floor with the exploding barrels,

besides that there are ladders in the 4 pillars.

But it probebly plays like shit anyway

Youre last screenshoot really looks awesome and thats a word I rarely use

Merkaba, Nice displacmenets work, looks unique to me, is that a hl2 texture on the top structure? haven't really seen it before

Sorry for the hammer screen I am still sorting out the lighting. I've been working on this for the last couple of days. I still have a lot to do before its finished but I'm sure I can before the 30th. Cool competition!
