Keep it atleast civil in here, past few pages (post-Shacknews explosion) are good, but I did have to edit out some of the more crappy / useless comments.

Wasn't the Stalker dev's building raided a few years back? Something about them using pirated copies of software?

Hey, michi.be, why must you stick your big nose into other people's business?

hey, if someone leaves stolen textures in the game and its THAT OBVIOUS... did you honestly think people wouldn't find out? it's like dumping a big pile of cocaine at timesquare with at sign next to it that reads PLEASE SNORT ME. I'm suuuuuure that wouldn't hit the news either.

They also have parts of BSD's IP stack stuff, which they turned OSS I think...

What about "Windows uses pirated software?"

    http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11183- ... ID=1765547

I said *also* I can really imagine that M$ uses pirated software or steals sourcecode from FOSS projects. Honestly.

Even a man with a small nose would have found this stuff.

I just took a quick look around of the textures they used (to use them in my d3 mod *kidding*) how big the skins are, shader stuff and so on.

As working with the Doom3 engine for years the stuff jumped into my eyes.

My intention is not or was never to harm GSC. They made a great game and i still enjoy it.

But i asked myself why mod-projects have been closed by lawers because they used a wrong name like a duke-mod or stargate/ starwars stuff.

On the other hand companies are spending a lot of money into copy-protections but dont have the money or resources to make some simple lightimages themself or take the time in 6 years of development to remove them so they are not left over? this was my intention in posting it here. i always look at files/structure of games im interesting in doing stuff for. you can learn nice things and get new ideas how to do stuff in other engines.

Im sure this was an accident. so please dont hunt me with forks or burn me on a pile of wood. :-7

heh the only other similar case i know is with some of Battlezone's (the 98 one) sounds nicked directly from Quake, along with their same exact filenames. This was also mentioned on BZuniverse

Battlezone was a fun game. I used to skii like a bitch in that game (and I'd never even played tribes :E).

My feelings on this are two sided. One part of me thinks that it's bad, stupid and not right to steal content of other games without paying for it, but the other half think that STALKER is a good game and having used other studio's content or no, doesn't change the fact that it's good. Valve and ID software both made a good buck out of it so why whine about it, right? It's not that Valve, for one, doesn't exploit the gamemarket like a bitch.. I hope this affair doesn't affect anything on the game and ID and Valve will be reasonable (so NOT sue the crap out of GSC).

    Ah well..

So, "reasonable" to you is to allow them to steal whatever content they please without repercussion for doing so? This is fairly unprecedented on this scale, I'd say. They stole from some major studios and brands that actually took their time to make a triple A game legitly. Being a "good game" has absolutely nothing to do with this, at all. That's an absolutely wreckless opinion and if nothing is done to combat it, then any company can just steal whatever they want to make their products... code, art, levels, whatever.

If I were the companies that were stolen from, I'd file suit on each piece of content that was stolen-- with a logical fee to offset the theft, but make sure its enough to ensure they don't do it again. Somewhere in the ballpark of $5,000 - $10,000 per piece of content. Not terrible on it's own, but adds up quick if you steal your entire product.

I'm not saying it's ok that they stole anything but I DO try to see this in the whole context. Wich is that Valve and ID are two BIG companies, making lots of money. Stealing in this case is not like taking away bread from a poor baker, it's more like nibbling off a big cake from some rich fella.. In this case, making another great cake of it, wich other people can actually enjoy..

I agree on your fees. Thee seem ''reasonable''.

omai, mapcore is bringing the whole place down... i read about this...

my opinion: even though I like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - if they did use other games source files that is... um, very bad. very bad indeed. One thing I would be careful is if the companies shared the same source for assets (i.e. they use something like Mayang for source files. but from the looks of it these are clearly not the case). If i was valve or id, i'd sue the crap out of them if the claims are in fact true. Even though I'd hate to see that happen to GSC... they shouldn't have done that.

The really shitty thing is if the execs at GSC had no idea this was going on and it was just some gun-ho artist on the team doing it.

    fun.

Finally some hard evidence. Its nice to see some other people seeing what I've seen for years.

    Stolen source anyone?

No wonder the game is so half-assed an full of bugs. Try coding on a engine that isn't even yours. First solid sign I had was when I went into console an typed cl_interpolate

if this is also true then i just cant help wondering what it was that took them all this time to make

also, if they did indeed steal the engine, then i think were gonna see much bigger lawsuits flying about than most of us would have thought at first, since they are in russia(?) i dont know if they are touchable, but their publisher?

Yeah, sure. I love how people jump to conclusions just to sound bombastic.

I don't really understand what you mean - that Stalker is running on a modified Source? Have you even played it?

BTW, there's a book I forgot the title of (GPU Gems 2 or something) that thoroughly explains Xray's way of rendering. It's nothing like Quake-based engines.
