I've needed a new graphics card for ages now and it's Christmas/my birthday in the space of a fortnight so I'm thinking that I could get one myself or get others to buy it for me. I was gonna settle on a 6800GT but I think I should try and get a better card so that it'll last.

I want a 7800, but I don't see what the difference is in all honesty plus this one has 512 RAM as oppose to the 7800 that has 256. I think that the 7800 has more fancy features over texture memory?

    This is the 7800:

    Opinions needed ASAP please, cheers!

Go for DX10.. Then you can atleast keep the card for quite a while.

Those were AGP cards guys, which I'm guessing means he is in need of an AGP card. In that case, I'd be tempted to suggest not bothering with a graphics upgrade and instead saving up for a system overhaul. Will cost quite a chunk however, unfortunately, so if it isn't feasible you might wanna get something that will just do you until you can afford it. I wouldn't want to spend over £100 on a card if I was putting it in an AGP system, personally.

This article over at toms hardware might be of use to you; it covers both PCI-E and AGP cards...

If you get the 7800, make sure you get one of the newer ones and you don't get it overclocked by the manufacturer. The GTXs had/have some serious problems because the initial specs were wrong, so any overclocking causes some shader cache problems.

    - Forget the 6xxx series and go for at least the 7 series. They got significantly better shader pipelines.

    - 256 megs of ram is more than enough.

    - Do not buy a agp card too expensive as you will have to get a pci-e anyways the next time you upgrade your comp. Furthermore the agp port is fairly limited and will be a bottleneck for the expensive cards.

Isn't it just best waiting for the dx10 cards to hit the shelves?

They already have, but right now its just the high end models that will set you back at least £300, which means its not exactly economically viable for many people yet.

Some of those cards go upto £500, I mean wtf

I don't think I'll be upgrading for a long time yet, my current rig will be with me for another two years at least. I need a new AGP card because my Ti 4200 is oooooold and I can't play Condemed and other games that need updated Pixel shaders
