i found dig a few months ago and stuck it on my google homepage, its a really great thing to have. i'm not exactly sure as to what kind of content you're going for though, is it game news, or game development articles/tutorials, or both or what? the digg system isnt that great for tutorials/articles because they aren't time relevant at all and wont be recognized for what they really are

the registration is a bit wacky, the way it's laid out it at first appears that there is no field for the email, but then i realized that it's spaced wrong. take a look and you'll understand

also, the + and - to rate comments is very hard to see because it's non contrasting at all. little icons would be better ala digg

good job on the graphics, i like how you made the m and controller, creative. could use a dash of other colors though, every thing is the exact same green hue and it gets boring

i found dig a few months ago and stuck it on my google homepage, its a really great thing to have. however, i'm not sure if it applies to this subject that great, it seems that you are going for articles that are related to related to game development while the digg system is more relevant to time based/news articles. the content that should be on your site doesn't matter when its created, the best article could have been submitted 2 days ago, but you'll only see it for a day. i dunno if that makes sense to you, i'm kinda rambling the registration is a bit wacky, the way it's laid out it at first appears that there is no field for the email, but then i realized that it's spaced wrong. take a look and you'll understand

I think it will apply to gamedev based content wonderfully. The amount of articles and tutorials, and art and whatnot I was able to dig up in 4 days bymself that I mostly hadnt seen before, and would want to discover again if I hadn't really convinced me that this is do-able. There is plenty of time sensitive, and non-time sensitive content relateable to game development to fill up the site if enough people contribute. Even if the internet froze right now, it would take years to dig up all the interesting stuff people have on the net relateable to game development. In reality there is new stuff popping up every day, and hopefully the site will become a mix of time-related news as well as non time-sensitive pieces.

I'll make a note of the registration thing, the css for this thing is really annoying to work with.

we also have been working on putting in vote icons for the comments but it's giving us a hassle in different browsers so that might be jumping around a bit.

might have a point about the green, I'm gonna let it sink in awhile and see where I might be able to add a colorful icon here and there.

*edit* saw your edit, the site is focused towards anything professional a game developer would shoot a co-worker and say, "hey, check this out" in fact, I really look at this as a constantly updating "hey check this out" list of things you would want to show your co-workers

it could be anything from an amazing screenshot from a game, an amazing portfolio, industry news, a post-mortem article, a list of technology for an upcoming engine, a tutorial, game dev resources (textures, sounds, etc), gossip, sales numbers, etc. I know there is even more I'm not thinking of, just look at the 6 pages of stories I have qeued up in the "look for stories" section of the site

its hard to say what i mean exactly, but my point is that i find the digg system more useful with time relative things, as most people will only look at new top items instead of the top dug items. maybe it would be good if you had sections and sorted them by most bumped

just put another article on the main page

lol, I think I see what you are talking about. But the theory is that as more people sign up the front page will start turning over pretty fast with new stuff. This is the first place I have ever linked the page and I did it, like 4 hours ago and there are only 12 registered users. Stories are gonna get bumped up to the main page pretty fast, considering a bunch are already teetering on the edge (takes 5 bumps right now) of the front page, with only a handful of people actually bumping.

I guess the point is that getting stories on the front page is up to you! Actually I just saw you put one on the front page with your vote, see what I mean?

also if you click on "top stories" in the side bar you can see the articles with the most bumps

thats my point though, once something is on the front page, it doesn't stay there. a great article might get posted, but it'll only get recognized for a few hours while it'll be applicable for several years

thats when you adjust the number of bumps it takes to get on the front page so that it moves at any pace you want. If the site gets popular enough with people getting stories posted faster than people can read them then it's a problem I'll gladly deal with. Even digg only goes through about a page a day.

Registered, nice idea but yeah you'll have to change the bump limit to something higher one day.

if possible I would like to change the number of bumps it takes to get on the front page to be something dynamic like 1/4th the number of registered users or something like that. I'm just happy things are working and people are interested, tweaking the way the site works is the easy part.

*edit* actually I think it might place articles higher up the more bumps they have, which would help keep the cool things on the front page (if it does) don't stop bumping once a story get's front paged if it's something you think is cool (and you havent bumped it already)

Zaphod - The what is devbump/FAQ could use a little tweaking. It's sorta overwhelming at the moment with so much to read. And so much that casual surfers won't really want to bother with. I think the most crucial information, selling the idea of devbump, should be the priority and the terms and conditions and license be linked individually at the end of the article or perhaps in a help section.

You could also follow other pages examples and edit the information making it direct and accessible from the frontpage. I've always liked that form. That way I don't have to snoop around a page to find out what it's all about. I know immediately when I enter. I know Digg uses the learn more which is maybe why you chose to design it that way, but you don't want to be an exact replica do you?

Here are some examples of popular pages with a direct about on the frontpage just so you know what I mean.

Odeo - Over one million audio files—from podcasts and all over the web. Listen, download, subscribe...

Reddit - reddit is a source for what's new and popular online. reddit learns what you like as you vote on existing links or submit your own!

Flickr - The best way to store, search, sort and share your photos.

There are plenty more examples but those are just the ones that came to mind. And I think you get the idea. If you don't go for the headliner approach then separating some of the about content would be beneficial. Right now, I think, it makes the page look like a bore.

I know everything is still undergoing development so I'm sure there will be a lot improved and changed over time. Anyhow everything looks fantastic! I'll definitely be making it a daily stop. Can't wait to see how it takes off and how it evolves.

Nice, only thing you should do is add just the title of the 10/5 most bumped topics on top.

thanks for the suggestions redhood! All that stuff does still need to be tweaked, everyone's input helps a lot.

once I do get all these things tweaked and polished with everyone here's help, then I will start going around to different communities and news sites to promote it and get lots of users. Hopefully that will be sometime next week!

Looks like a great idea and site Zaph! I really do think that you should take amount of votes into account when calculating position on the frontpage.

i added the rss feed to my google homepage, though its not as neat as the digg one, you can see the source for theirs here:

    http://digg.com/goog/ig.xml

it shows you the number of diggs in the same type of box you'd see on the digg page

this is what they both look like side by side

    [Blocked Image: http://www.zeroproof.com/bicball/devbumpgoogleig.jpg]

there should be a button to subtract a bump too, maybe say "kick" or "slap" or something
