I wish Valve would port Decay to the PC as a free expansion to HL

Many MANY years ago this was the plan, well not free but a port was done. Getting it running on PC was actually really easy, as we had developed on pc first and put it on ps2 after. All it needed was a front end, which was the first thing I did after condition zero...

I strongly imagine Valve still intends to bring Decay out for HL source...

    Time will tell.

Today we'd like to announce our mod project for Half-Life 2 - Decay which is a remake of Gearbox Software's Decay addon for PlayStation®2 version of Half-Life.

I've no idea why a single player campaign for a FPS is getting so many 'votes.' Don't get me wrong, OpFor was rad, but hardly the most expanding thing ever.

Decay was the two player co-op game that came with HL PS2. It wasn't terribly long (maybe 2 or 3 hours of playing if you were slow). There were a few two-player "puzzles," namely pressing buttons in different rooms. At one point, you can get trapped in an elevator shaft and have to use a team jump (ala Counterstrike and TFC) to get out.

Decay was one of the first things Mikey and I did at Gearbox. We got to playtest it over and over and over and over and over and over. I think once we had memorized where the enemies were, we speed ran it in less than an hour. The best day of playtesting was when the final boss had a bug in his code that basically gave him infinite health. Mike and I did not know this at the time and spent over and hour holding our own against him before we finally ran out of ammo.

Oh, one last funny Decay story: During playtesting, a kid in a wheelchair came to playtest with us. I don't remember exactly why, but I recall that his mom worked in the building and thought he'd enjoy it for a few days. He also had some mild developmental disabilities that made it hard for him to process things and talk. So we just set him up with a PS2 and let him be. Oddly enough, one of the main AI characters in the game is a scientist in a wheelchair. At one point, this character gives each player a stack of grenades and then gets in a confined train with them. Since our job was to try to break the game as much as possible, Mike an dI started throwing grenades at the guy in the wheelchair (video game, not real life). He explodes and the game ends because you lost. Rather loudly, I comment that if you blow up a guy in a wheel chair, there shouldn't just be meat gibs. There should also be wheelchair gibs. I don't think the kid in the wheelchair liked me after that. But for at least one build, there were metal gibs when you blew up the character.

    Haha, superb story.

I didn't know you worked at Gearbox? Or have you quit?

Op4CTF kicked ass - I ordered a Gearbox shirt just because it had the powerup icons on it. the powerup mode was pretty cool, too, but came a little late unfortunately. Heard about some other great stuff in the pipe from a couple of the designers, but sadly those things never really got finished.

I really enjoyed Blue Shift for what it was, too. I think what made them so special was just the alternate perspective of identical events, rather than stuff like, say, the Q2 mission packs that is a completely different person, different place, different circumstances. Gearbox did a great job taking a familiar framework and mixing it up just enough to be something really impressive.

Also have to place votes for lord of destruction and winter assault (d2 and dawn of war, respectively). New DoW expansion also looks like it should be really good...

Hey regarding Decay it's nice to see that Gearbox is not going to fox it:)

Oh and redarding Half Life 2: Episode 1, it's an expansion pack. Gabe Newell can polish up the language with some nice PR spin, but it's still a freaking expansion, even if it can be played as a standalone game. Blue Shift could be purchased as a standalone game (and it came with Op4 and CS).

oh, Fletch, your story introduced discussion of an awesome (like horrifically terrible style) new game after I shared it with a few people at the office. sadly I don't see it ever seeing the light of day...

Yeah, throwing grenades at the wheelchair-bound cripple was not one of my finer moments of humanity. But still, there should ahve been metal gibs.
