Any more vehicle recommendations? Aside from rail shooting sequences, what about where player technically does have control of the vehilce (not just the weapon) but is really forced down a fairly linear path. Best examples are some MoH and CoD tank levels I can think of...
Best Sniper levels from a "fixed" position

Couple levels in Halo and Half Life 2 where you're driving and shooting... More recently - Advent Rising had a long tank driving bit. Though, that game wasn't very good.

Quake 4 had a few of those railtype vehicle maps. The tank maps
and the one map you actually were using a weapon on some railway
thingy

-
The "Silent Scope" series come to my mind.
-
Tomb Raider Legends had a motorbike level, extremely linear but you control the bike and fire your handgun.
-
"Conflict: Desert Storm 2" had a few defensive missions where you had to hold a building against swarms of incoming enemies. Lots of sniping in that game, but then I did play as the sniper class (4 player coop) so I guess I would say that
Also features vehicles which are normally driven along confined paths, and only one person is in control while the others use guns from them. I'm sure the same sort of gameplay would crop up in the other Conflict games too, but I only played Conflict Vietnam briefly and haven't played the others.Resident Evil 4 had some sections where your movement was restricted and you had to fight off enemies - most notably the house where you, Ashley and Louis (was that his name?) get severly overrun. Also in an area with a lift, where you have to shoot enemies jumping on or sniping from the sides without much opportunity to move around. Also had a brief rail shooting section of sorts when you are riding in the back of a truck.
The original Sin's intro section had you gunning from a mounted gun on a helicopter - a fairly common scenario in games (such as GRAW and Path of Neo) - and though I haven't seen it happen yet I believe Sin Episodes has some shooting from a car.

I'd honestly avoid those myself.

Best one I can think of is the airboat sequence in HL2. Well-paced, broken up nicely between the vehicle and on-foot, great environmental interaction, etc. etc. If you're going to do vehicles, they should kick that much ass.

I actually had fun on the tomb raider bike levels, too. Simple but entertaining.
Oh, and if you're doing a sniper mission... never, never, never, NEVER do anything like the one in Perfect Dark Zero. Absolutely terrible.

I didn't even bother playing PDZ.
I actually just started playing Far Cry Instincts: Predator on X360. (rented it). I gotta say, it's both good and meh. I don't like the feel of the controls, though I suppose I need to adjust. I'm guessing there will be vehicles and sniping, given the PC game had so much of both.
Anyway, the key distinction for the vehicle gameplay is that there will be multiple players riding in a single armored vehicle at a time shooting enemies coming at them in an urban settings as the vehicle moves to an objective point. The snipers and portable rocket guys will be in a single, fixed location in the same level providing birds eye view support.
I can't get into more detail right now (will once the thing goes public) but it's a cool design just they are having trouble visualizing the gameplay right now...cause they are marketing guys (though still totally cool).

Sounds like tribes multiplayer.

I think you guys got a little side tracked. Rail-shooters don't allow you to control where you go (think Virtua Cop or that old Area 51 arcade game), thats not the same thing as riding in a vehicle in a mp game.

In my defence, with the tribes series - you can load a bunch of people in a vehicle and travel down a path, or road - whatever, while being shot at. Not a rail shooter, but close enough if you ask me.
EDIT: The SOCOM series comes to mind as well.

He didn't just ask for rail shooters - he did say that vehicle sections where you don't control the vehicle or are forced down a path should also be mentioned, as well as fairly static position defense style games (e.g. sniping from a rooftop you can move around on).

A user controllable vehicle being forced down a fairly narrow path is probably most relevent. Yes, player has control, but there's really only one way to go. So no Battlefield 2 type vehicle play, but more freedom than the standard MoH rail shooting sequence.
I think that Tribes example is interesting where you have a player as a driver and teammates on the back shooting the enemy.
Further clarification: all the enemies are going to be AI controlled. So it's a big co-op game where the players are all on the same team...like TEAM AMERICA!

-
I imagine there were some similar vehicle sequences in the singleplayer of the new tribes game (tribes: Vengence) but I never got around to buyign the game.
-
Its probably (almost certainly) irrelevant but I like it anyway, Blast Corps for the N64.
"Thats not a sniper/rail level"
True, but the objective is set on a track and cannot deviate and you have to clear the path for it via any and all means neccesary.

The first part of the morroco mission in No One Lives Forever. You have to pick off snipers that are targetting a deaf and near sighted (and pretty dumb) ambassador, who's having a hilarious conversation with a native morrocan. If you wanted to do the mission easy, you could ask an ally to tell you where the snipers would appear.
God that game rocked.

Not a PC game, but Terminator 3: Redemption was actually a pretty fun semi-rail shooter.
