I've seen DEP live, their guitar skills are impressive but I'm not a fan of their music really, kind of like Converge as well.
Do I have to resurrect 'The Metal Thread' again? ![]()

You might like Josh Hommes earlier band Kyuss too, also there are tons of similar good stoner rock bands like Orange Goblin but make sure you pick up "The Big Black" since it is widely regarded as their best, then there are Fu Manchu, Nebula, Masters of Reality. Also, same kind of straight forward manly rock is Monster Magnet that rocks very very much.
If you want more stoner rock or just some bands that can direct you to different directions and to new genres, just ask.

That thread sort of gave me a headache ![]()
I just never understood the reasoning behind categorizing and subdividing bands of a genre. I don't know where it leads. If a band evolves from one style to another where do you stick them? Another category? This sort of thing always seemed pretty pointless to me.

Says a guy who is called erratic ![]()
Well jokes aside, I like to use the major genres to describe the band if you can't give any similar bands as examples (if he doesn't know the bands for example) but it also can be a hindering, since for example my cousin says he hates Jazz even if he doesn't actually know what Jazz is and don't know how wide Jazz as a genre is (music style over 100 years old is way more than meets the eye/ear).
But I agree that genres are one of the most stupid things human kind has come up with, especially you can see the stupidity of it in Metal, there are more genres than there are bands. But Metal is full of elitists that try to make themselfs seem superior by describing that "they don't listen to Death Metal but the ovbiously better offshoots of it called Chopchop Metal and Hikkerydoo Metal".

I didn't know you were into Kyuss?! I know loads of people who love them and are always wanting them to reform. You like Electric Wizard and Clutch? I'm not keen on the latter but EW are fucking awesome, especially the latest album. I also like a lot of non-stoner type Doom such as Khanate and Esoteric.
I have QOTSA's 'Songs For The Deaf' somewhere...

That made me LOL ![]()
There are a lot of elitists in metal, but elitism in itself isn't always a bad thing. A lot of elitists I know listen to a lot of classical music and jazz as well as metal but dismiss everything else, I don't see a problem with that, at least they're not in the mind that 'metal is the only good type of music' or whatever.
Problem with genres is they are neccessary, to the casual listener 'Black Metal' and 'Death Metal' are considered the same, even though there is a HUGE difference between the two, most people wont care but the point is putting both genres into one is just stupid.
Personally I think we should call everything Rock N' Roll and have done with iy ![]()
I had a time where I explored the vast resources of stoner rock and doom metal (yeah, yet another metal genre whopdedoo), so I love Kyuss, also Electric Wizard is good, Eagles of Death Metal is cool too, and Homme's "The Desert Sessions" is awesome.
Me and some of my friends like the idea of calling acoustic music either Jazz, Prog Rock, Rock and Heavy Rock (or just Heavy), since those main genres seem to hold the test of time, true you could just have Jazz, Rock and Pop, but I don't like over generalizing either, it's like saying "hey you listen to sound?".
But music business is so large these days that you need some genres of other means of describing the music if you don't know any similar bands or records. But it has just gotten out of hand because it almost feels that every band needs their own genre. It used to be a movement like proge rock and not arbitrary word used by musican to describe his work.
You might like The Capricorns and Ramsees, I'll see if I can upload a couple of songs oh and some Electric Wizard for the uneducated among us ![]()
corpsepaint, corpsePAINT.... CORPSEPAINT!
Well, I can recommend Therion: Secret of the Runes for any Heavy fans out there, might be the best cd I have heard for atleast 3 years.
oh yeah, kyuss and stoner rock in general are great. I found an internet radio with loads of stoner rock the other day btw, http://www.stonerrock.com/
stonerrock.com rules, found it about a year ago by my roommate, baby woodrose rocks all!
