    Ads in games 0

    1. Doesnt bother me (0) 0%
    2. Its ok if they dont overdo it (0) 0%
    3. It will become a genuine nightmare (0) 0%

I just had an interesting conversation on IRC with Bl1tz about ads in videogames. It became a very heated debate with Hitler, Africa, slavery and aids all discussed. My opinion, it doesnt bother me that much, while im waiting to respawn they might entertain me, and when im playing i dont see the walls or even the floor. And i dont think its gonna get ridiculously out of control.

Bl1tz opinion: it is nightmare. I dont want to play in a medieval mmorpg with condom ads, it shatters the immersion and escape from reality ppl desperately need in a capitalistic society out of control. In 3-5 years it will be a seriously out of control

Seriously what do you guys think about ads in games. Does it suck or doesnt it bother you that much?

Ads don't belong in games because they destroy the immersive experience of the games. If you need money that badly, either raise the price of the game, or charge me a subscription fee to maintain the upkeep of the servers. I would rather pay more than have my game experience destroyed by gaudy, cheesy ads appearing in games.

Ads are not all evil for sure, I totally understand their placement in newspapers, on radio, and on TV. But the idea behind a game is to have a fun, immersive experience that takes you out of your everyday life, and brings you to a place where you can role play.

RD next time you wanna throw your bullshit at someone, choose someone who can't articulate their ideas. Comparing me to Hitler and saying I want African babies to starve because I don't support in game ads is a little immature and short sighted.

[07] im almost finished making the thread

[07] blitz you shouldnt escape from reality when africa is suffering from aids

In-game ads in CS is ridiculous. "Let's have vacuum cleaner ads in the next Super Mario! BRILLIANT! I'm sure it won't bother 10 year old kids"

cl_allowdownload 0 or so.but I really don't think I'd bother if there was a real advertise on a billboard or something, but if they slap shit into their maps where it doesn't fit, then it will suck etc.

They already threw ads into Choas Theory. As Blitz said, it really takes you out of the game. I hate the idea.

If they make sense in the map and are well made they might enhance the look of the map really.

But mostly this isn't the case in todays maps

Edit: Oh we were talking sounds?..

    Too lazy to read really.

As far as i know there is ads in the MMOFPS planetside.

The ads can me changed on-demand and counts how much time each player spends on having the ad in the center of his crosshair for statistics.

However we Swedes are not alowed to see them because of international laws.

If games get cheaper and better because of the ads, and they dont cover the whole screen or destroy the gameplay experience, then bring em on!

Ads dont fit into every game though.

As long as they fit in, then I think it's super cool if we can get cheaper games that way.

The Source engine is already prepared for it, so it might also come in Valve in games at some point. It is this technology we use for our dynamic motds at SoW.

I would sooner pay $80 for a game without ads than $30 for a game with ads.

It doesn't personally bother me much, as long as it a) seems to realistically fit into the environment, and b) it isn't too in-your-face.

One thing to note on the topic, there is the business side of ad placement in games. From a developer's standpoint, these other companies that want thier logos in games have to pay good amounts of money to do so. What does this translate to the developer? It reduces the entire cost of the project development. So imagine four to six companies shelling out a good amount of cash to see their logo in a game? That adds up to mucho-dollars-o.

But yeah, if the ad sticks out like a sore *insert any profanity laden word here*, then it sucks. It has to fit the environment. An example is when I was working on Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, there is a rooftop area on the penthouse (the fourth map if I remember), and there you will see in all its glory, a large, actual 3d sign of AXE. But I found it rather fitting. Had the AXE logo been plastered on say, every trash can on a street, every train window in a subway, or the entire wall of a building in a dark alley, it might look alittle cheap and silly.

But there are definately people / gamers out there who hate seeing ads in games. After all, we are inundated with ads everyday. So, some willl question, 'I play to get away from reality, but I see real world ads even in this fantasy place'. It's an interesting topic for sure.

In either case, love'em or hate'em, I think they are here to stay. Only when it gets to the point where new born-babies have ads tatooted on the inside of their eyelids so they can see brand marketing while they sleep will the marketing agencies be happy.

    Cheers,

    NRG

    lol @ gin

personally i hate ads and try to avoid them wherever possible. this is a main reason why i don't watch tv, and why i have every ad known to man blocked on websites. while gin's pic is funny here, it may become the sad future, but let's hope not.

I wouldn't say it could become a nightmare, but definitely an irritant. You tend to find that companies always find a way to take it one step further than they should, especially if a fair old wad of cash is involved.

What's next? Popups / trailers before the game starts or something equally annoying? You might scoff at such a thing, but I have a bunch of DVDs that have unskippable trailers on them. Yes, DVDs that I paid for have fucking forced-unskippable-bastard advertising on them. It just shows you that some companies will do it if they think they can. Gaming is the emerging industry, so it's only natural that the money men / marketing people will scrutinise every single aspect of gaming. I just hope it doesn't happen to the kind of scale we see elsewhere I swear at my TV when the adverts arrive. I actually mute the TV now because they annoy me so much; it's just as well I don't watch a lot of TV or I'd probably have hunted down and killed certain people over it.
