Does anyone prefer AI-guided journaling prompts or blank pages?

Does anyone here prefer using AI-guided journaling prompts over just writing on blank pages? I’ve been journaling on my own for a while with blank pages, but sometimes I find it difficult to start or keep going without some kind of direction. On the other hand, I’ve heard that AI-guided prompts can help kickstart thoughts or feelings, especially on days when writing feels tough. But I fear that prompts might feel limiting or scripted, making the journal less personal. For those who have tried both methods, does one feel more helpful or authentic than the other? I’m genuinely curious because I want to build a steady journaling habit but don’t know which approach would suit me better.

While exploring the topic, I noticed that many of the best journaling apps fall into two main categories: those built around free-form writing and those that use AI-powered prompts to guide the experience. Reviews of the best journaling apps suggest that some users appreciate the freedom of an empty page, allowing them to express thoughts without any structure, while others find guided prompts helpful for sparking ideas and encouraging deeper reflection. Many of the best journaling apps also highlight how AI assistance can make it easier to begin writing and help users maintain a more consistent journaling habit. Based on both user feedback and my own observations, the ideal approach depends on individual preferences and writing style. For some, prompts feel like a supportive guide that keeps the process engaging, while others value the simplicity and openness of a blank page. This variety shows that journaling is highly personal, and the strongest apps recognize this by offering different ways for people to capture their thoughts.

The debate between AI-guided journaling prompts and blank pages highlights how varied journaling practices can be. Some users find that structured prompts help maintain their writing habit and spark deeper reflections, especially when they face writer’s block. Others argue that blank pages provide the freedom to express whatever comes to mind without feeling steered. It seems the effectiveness of either approach depends on how comfortable the person is with introspection and self-expression. Technology has added new dimensions by making prompts adaptive and personalized, but the simplicity of a blank canvas still holds timeless appeal. This diversity in journaling preferences suggests that flexibility and choice within apps may play a key role in helping more people sustain their journaling habits. Ultimately, the best journaling experience seems to be one that aligns with the user’s unique style and needs.
