Metaverse

In the next few years, both the metaverse and defi will become huge. I've been reading a lot about it these in the past couple months, so the fact that Facebook goes ahead and announces this felt pretty surreal. Can't think of a more power hungry and cocky enough company than Facebook to even attempt such a thing, to the point of have it on their name. Since Google is already doing this albeit in a more sneaky way, by the way they're developing their ecosystem. Kudos to Facebook for not even trying to hide it, I guess.

I'm very interested in the defi side of metaverse. Whether we want it or not, money rules our lives so to have that aspect on a decentralized chain sounds better than a dictatorial centralized power entity.

You referring to Google or Facebook, to develop their own thing. Cos just saw the news and Facebook/Meta is proposing somewhat of an open standard or at least a collab of players to create a larger space

Very much doubt anything fb does will be open. First thing they did when they bought Oculus was to close it's ecosystem.

Facebook is interesting. They strike me as a company that could really go either way, either continue in massive success, or become the next Yahoo!

They are uniquely awful at public relations, but also a case study in the fact that public relations aren't important when you have a tight grip on the market. Their acquisitions have been game changers (Instagram especially), building from the success they had with Facebook and applying that to the next generation. Now they are pivoting to VR, laying the foundations to capture the next generation.

In terms of business savvy, they have made awesome moves at just the right times. I used to think Zuckerberg was just a lucky plagiarist, but now I think he's a smart one, he knows what to do and when, and he knows what he wants, as goofy as he can seem. The Oculus play hasn't really payed off yet, but it will. They are pouring money on that investment, really sticking with it and fueling it for the long term in a serious way.

I think people have underestimated Zuckerberg up to this point, and it has worked to his advantage. He is still quite young for a founding CEO, but his track record for success is already quite good. Ten years ago I did not expect that Facebook would still command so much cultural importance, but their vision for the future seems clearer than ever, much clear than Apple's, for example.

All this "Meta" stuff may seem like a reaction to the potential risk posed by regulators, but every time election season that rolls around in the US, the politicians grovel to Facebook like dogs at dinner time. If that's truly Facebook's primary concern, then they aren't going anywhere.

Yeap. Facebook started out as a website to rate hot chicks on a university campus, just the kids there actually used it as a social platform. Twitter was used to post what you were eating for dinner, just people started posting controversial 160 character long phrases instead.

Then somewhere along the road... those dudes become billionaires, gain more power than countries do (and they do make sure they exert it, I mean... they banned a president lol) and we're suppose to raise them to these pedestals of entrepreneurship and amazement.

Meanwhile, they still refuse to take a decision on whether or not they're a platform, or a publisher. But every day they decide what's wrong or what's right for the rest of us plebs, all while taking advantage and exploiting our dopamine receptors.

A few years ago, I was tripping balls and the realization that I was addicted to Facebook popped into my mind. If I was at the computer and I had 3 seconds to burn, like exporting a bake or whatever, I'd alt+tab right back into my feed. I then installed an extension that blocked "Facebook.com" and a couple other websites i wanted to annihilate from my life. If you try to access one of these blocked websites, this plugin would tell you how many times it was tried that day, and total count. For about 3 weeks, I tried to access Facebook 72 times, I still have that number tattooed into my memory. 72 fucking times and I KNEW it was blocked, and still tried to open it. It was one of the best things I could have done, because it opened my mind to other negative habits and addictions I have.

My mom used to be an avid reader of books, she'd used to tell me how much she loved them. Now she only doomscrolls Facebook all day, and joins these weird groups where people hate on X or Y, she hasn't read a book in a long time now.

One thing I'm nearly certain of in life, is that our society would be better of without these fucking websites. They're all but "social".

Remenber kids, if it's free... you're the product! We're more hooked to these fucking things than we care to admit, and now it's going "meta"? Lmao... get the fuck outta here man.

Meh... part of me wishes we all went back to forums and mirc.

I’m team GabeN when we talk of neuro-implants. I used to like Elon, with time I find him a smoke-seller, borderline scammer.

I really like Carmack's take on this. Nothing can be done to stop Mark Zuckerberg from pursuing his ambition. What matters is that all this engineering labour goes towards something with real value, rather than being just an instrument for him to grow his empire.

Just think of the enormous brain drain that the propaganda industry is responsible for.

Yeah I had a similar experience. Then a couple weeks ago there was this facebook outage for less than a day. On my phone it said I needed to re-authenticate or whatever to log back in to use the app. Same in my primary browser that I had normally been using to access facebook from my computer. I never did log in to either again, only able to access facebook in a separate secure browser (i mean probably slightly more secure but whom are we kidding here?).

tl;dr: I have cut my facebook time the past few weeks to an average of 2 minutes a day, if that.

Life is so much better now.
