There's a behind the scenes-explanation at the beginning of this video regarding the concept and location

Wow, okay. So, far from the original implications of the cover and first trailer, rather than addressing the real growing fascism in America, this is using those aesthetics for a Christian cult that also has black members? They even show the white protag siccing his dog on the black guy in the trailer??? Could Ubi be any more fucking cowardly with this production?

Goddamn. How is Wolfenstein 2, a sci-fi game made in Sweden, a more realistic assessment of America than this modern 'realistic' game made just across the border in Toronto?

Saw gameplay of this at e3.

Environments look good, I like how colorful it is.

Shooting feels ok'ish, it misses the humph that great games offered us in the past year, Doom, Destiny, even Dishonored shooting feels better. There's a weird jankiness to the game that I can't describe, but hey its still WIP so we'll see, but from what I've seen it didn't impress me much.

Lighting looks really good though, interiors look amazing considering its a real time lighting solution, seems like they're doing some GI and AO.

The setting seems a bit weird, seems like they're trying to push for some sort of social criticism while still trying their best to be politically correct?

I wouldn't see it necessarily as a critique of the real world, but I dunno if the devs said anything. Is not like The Following (TV show) wanted to say anything about cultism (I think).

I mean these cult stuff are plainly "cool" and we didn't have comparable portrayals in games, nothing that felt this grounded at least.

Ps: some NPC interactions in the gameplay reminded me straight away of some The Walking Dead scenes, I bet that was a reference too.

That's my impression of it as well, hence setting it in the least populated state, with a fantasy bad guy with equal "alt right" and "hipster" flavoring to his imagery. How are companies still not getting that, rather than this kind of shit being "inoffensive to everyone", it ends up offensive to most people by diluting a dozen real issues into a deliberately pointless mess? If you can't be straight with us, if you can't handle the topics you're using, set your game in fucking Middle Earth.

I had a lot of problems with how Watch Dogs 2 handled its social issues (mostly in how they made things like gentrification and police brutality all the fault of one single guy, rather than systemic issues that have been going on for multiple generations), but at least they TRIED. And that game was super well received, which makes this cowardice baffling.

I dunno if I'm misunderstanding what you guys saying, but I don't think that setting it in the less populated state is to be less offensive, simply makes more sense? I mean I imagine the thought process being "if this was set just outside a major city National Guard would be there in no time, but since is less populated there's the chance/excuse of communication breakdown and people not being able to inform there's a maniac lining everyone up".

Also rural country has people with more religion beliefs, there are more quirky characters, people do actually own a boat or plane and workshops that would allow customisation.

How would it be believable for a guy with a "family operation" to take over an area populated by tens of his men? How would you even technically render it, if you had crowds?

Of course the bad guy is somewhat flashy and hipster, to make it appealing to the young audience who's actually the main audience.

idk if you saw the recent news out of Portland, Oregon, but a Nazi slashed three men's throats on a public train recently, killing two, for confronting him for harassing a teenager. At the resulting protests and counter protests, the cops openly sided with the fascist militias that marched into town from rural Oregon, and even worked together to arrest people. There were pictures of militia members literally grabbing the handcuffs off of the belts of cops to arrest protesters.

The story people thought Ubi was going to be telling can be set anywhere in the US, and doesn't require claiming a "cult" has "forcibly taken over" a town to do it.

I thought this had come out already, until the other day I decided to dig out FC4 that I haven't yet finished, and saw on Uplay that it is on pre-order

    - Small DLC campaigns in the same vein as Blood dragon?

    - Far Cry Arcade - a map editor which is stacked with assets form several different Ubisoft games and allows to create content for SP, COOP & MP missons?

What? Is Ubisoft actually making a pretty decent move here? :o

Great move from UBI, it was about time to see a compagny trying to copy Valve's business model.

Unexpected that they're bundling assets from not just current and previous Far Cry games, but also Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed games! Means you can put together levels of all kinds of themes, rather than just whatever Far Cry 5's predominant theme is. Could be a great way of interesting lots of would-be level designers, especially with the progression system.
