Nintendo Switch

    Nintendo is being very savvy in using Skyrim and NBA 2kXX to advertise the Switch. As someone living in a college dorm, Skyrim is still the game people talk about. People still often own 360s, they still don't know which current gen console to own. This isn't designed for just nerds arguing about framerates and specs, it's for the people that got excited about Pokemon Go.

    I'm curious if Nintendo will further open their dev program when the Switch releases, will the Switch just work as a devkit? If so, the Switch could have one of the best game libraries out there. I would love to be able to develop for a portable console by myself.

    Design still looks like from Nintendo, you know it's a Sony console when you can see your fingerprints all over the place.

    Really like everything what I've seen from Switch, only hope they offer some new refreshing games.

    So, I have a question. In the video you see someone inserting what it looks like a small cartridge. Does it mean the Switch wont support discs? How the hell am I suposed to play my WiiU games on it then? Are you gonna force me to buy them again Nintendo?

    If it's using the Tegra chip, as those leaks/rumors posted last page and months ago claimed, then the battery life should be pretty good. Cell phones have done a lot for battery life development, not so much by making better batteries, but by innovating on chip and screen power efficiency.

    Also, if it's using the Tegra chip, it's definitely not going to play your WiiU games, HP WiiU is PowerPC, just like the Wii and Gamecube. Tegra is ARM. Maybe they've learned a thing or two from the 3ds's launch though, and will focus on streamline ports and accessing existing purchased digital content through their store. The 3ds's store security is laughable right now, though, clearly they haven't put a lot of work into it: Pirates can literally download and run legit copies of games directly from Nintendo, unimpeded and undetectable.

    Personally, I'm interested, but have two big questions: Price, like Pampers, and storage. Flash memory has been cheap as fuck lately, but platform makers are still charging enormous premiums for onboard memory, like $100 extra on the price tag for 16GB, and SD card slots are like unicorns on any recent phone (thanks Apple!). 3ds uses SD though, thankfully, so hopefully the Switch will, too. Digital distribution is 1000x better than buying physical games and having to swap them, but games lately have been fat as hell (bring back compression for 2017, game industry!), and having to delete and redownload something is obviously a nightmare compared to swapping disks.

    Looked into it: Nvidia has confirmed the Switch is based on Tegra. Last year Nvidia showed off their latest Tegra model, Tegra X1, running Unreal Engine 4. The upcoming Tegra X2 "Parker" is faster and even has GPGPU support, so maybe the Nintendo Switch will have fancy particle effects and cloth physics like circa 2010 PC games :D They haven't specified what version of the chip they're using, though, only implying that, at least on the driver level, things have been heavily customized for the Switch. Nvidia's press release has a lot more details than Nintendo's and mentions "a revamped physics engine", but has no tech specs. It also says the release date is March 2017.

    The Switch is gonna be a godsend for all those mobile developers that will be able to just repackage their games and sell them at even higher price than what they are on mobile.

    Will this fly with the demographic in the ad? I'm 30, I commute to work, but I carry two devices and a bunch of other shit already. There's not enough time to whip it out and play Zelda during the day anyway. Feels bad man.

    It makes sense to market a product like this to your core audience, the kids and the moms will come.

    I've started playing my 3ds again. Good phone games are rare and fleeting, and Twitter is bad for my blood pressure during the election season. :P

    They already confirmed nothing is backwards compatible. NOTHING!

    Nothing but rumors that I've seen. It supposedly has a multitouch screen, at least, according to "inside sources". If by tablet features you mean an Android OS and non-gaming functionality though, I doubt it.

    I hope it doesn't, I have my cellphone for that. This should be a gaming console first and foremost, portable or not.
