Some people do. When you look directly at someone for a short period and do this, without raising the eyebrows, that's fine. Long stares with the eyes wide and raised eyebrows when addressing someone happens for a few reasons, but mostly it's not believing what you are saying and forcing the look. Some people say this is because if they do not, they may do some of the classic 'tells' they are not saying something they believe in, like looking away, looking up, flicking the eyes around whilst accessing different parts of the brain to coat the words into convincing packets of data to send to the lips.

This is why it's hard to look someone in the face, directly and lie - because to do so requires immense effort to stop the (almost) automatic natural instinct to shift around in your seat, look about the room and generally avoid eye contact. Look at it this way, the face has got like 40 muscles in it, plus you got the eyes, the whole body moving and your brain accessing the hard drives and all of your other senses operating. You got to hit the 'turbo' button on the DX overlock to stop your natural instincts giving you up.

Telling the truth is easy, lying is incredibly hard.

Hence my last comment. It does appear to be difficult circumstances, and noisy; in a language he does not speak.

Tough to do PR under those circumstances, but I do not think that Modding or mods for this game are going to be what we understand mods to be. Snapmap is an example of this. Not knocking the fact it exists, but a full on SDK it is not...but I understand it is a transient system, so who knows what Snapmap will or shall become in the future.

For Quake, I think the question is "Will we be able to create our own maps and administer our own servers?" if we got those two, then great - but the immediate follow-on from that is "Can WE port maps from prior versions, and can we create fresh and new mods for ourselves, our friends and the community én massé?"

The answer, AFAICT, is "no, no and no" with a side-step of "...not at launch..." but time is an interchangeable thing and allows you to be non-committal, doesn't it? It's PR/Marketing 1-oh-1. He could've easily said "...not by lunch-time..." and due to the interchangeability of it, would have been just as accurate and non-committal.

Sprony said he has got maps 'ready' from prior version which he shelved - I think there are and must be others, and Quake Champions has the opportunity (Like Unreal Tournament had) to allow conversions from prior versions of Quake - but I doubt that will happen, based on those two comments alone.

Again, it could be due to difficult circumstances...time will tell.

Skimmed the videos - this does not look like it is staying true to the roots of the franchise in any way. I absolutely love Quake3 and have sunk hundreds of hours into it but I doubt I'll be picking this up - and it'll be the same reasons why Unreal Tournament 3 tanked.

If you would have expressed concerns about the Champions and whether or not it goes the MOBA route I could have understand that. But if you purely look at what they've showed so far, it lives and breathes Quake. Especially the last part of the video below. If that's not Quake I don't know what it is. It's even plays in a Campgrounds remake for crying out loud :)

didn't they get quite a few Quake 3 pros to playtest this game to death until they got the go ahead from them, or something like that? I mean, them doing that really shows they know what they're doing with this, I actually don't want another Quake 3, I've sunken thousands of hours on that game, I want something on that vibe but different, and it seems like it's what we're getting.

It was born out of the desire to do something new with Quake Live and made by the same team. Also yes, they invited the pro players. I spoke to some of them and you know what they said to id? Put more champions in the game. It's not a MOBA at all or very similar to Overwatch. It's pure hardcore Quake. But....the champions are designed to compliment play styles, not to be heroes. So with Ranger you can teleport (like with UT's locator) and Anarki is faster but has lower armor. The basics are the same for everyone, including the weapons (picks ups and map domination baby), it just has some more tactical depth depending on which champion you choose.

As a successor to Q3A I think it looks splendid, but I will always hold out hope for a true successor to Quake 1 (SP and MP). I think with games like this, ultimately the proof of the pudding is always in the maps. Arena shooters have lost their way a bit with map design in the last decade or so.

The game looks good, I'll buy this for sure, maybe not as good as Q3 but times change, I already want to try those new game mechanics.

Looks good on it's own, but feels a lot more like UT99 sequel to me somehow.

That's because of the temple map and the brighter colors I suppose. But if you look at Doom's season pass maps I have no doubt that this won't be the case when all is done. Those guys still have it.

Looking forward to really see the new Champions mechanics, if they really matter.

Also maps, what they shown isn't that exciting. Most importantly community support (if not a full editor a more powerful version of Snap Map please!)

like @text_fish said I'd like to see a Quake SP as well. I'm secretly hoping this white whale will materialise in a not too distant future.

Considering they have long term plans for the game, such as e-sports tournaments, it would be a huge mistake on their part not to release a proper level editor. I would love to see more companies support the community in a similar way Valve is doing with the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive operations or Team Fortress 2 themed updates.
