I don't care about religion, nor is this supposed to ignite a discussion into theology. Nowhere have I stated that religion should have control over people's lives. I was speaking about common courtesy and respect. Something that everyone should have towards each other, religion or not.
What's going on with your life?

Likewise i don't think it has much to do with religion, well actually it does a bit, but so little that it would be way too simplistic to explain this kind of situation by religious intolerance only. This kind of symbolic acts made in the name of culture/religion/tradition always come from a very contemporary political/social tension boiling down but which can't be played on the political field.
There is tension between the western block countries and the arabic world at play since the decolonisation which still keep the arabic world into political instability and there has been an increase since 2000 for the reasons we know. There is also a franco-french problem which makes that the majority of the immigration issued population come from algeria/tunisia/morocco. Those lower class populations where isolated not only culturally but also locally, mainly by the logic of the renting market which kept immigrants out of certain parts of cities to not make the prices of certain living areas going down. Well obviously this creates unrest and division. For example the suburb town i grew in for 20 years is still nowadays ~90% muslim or people issued from the arabic immigration.
So of course i can only speak for myself, but when there is a period of political instability it always cracks first at the most weak point of the society stability. That's why i'm pissed off when the most read free newspaper in france title : "the hatred of free speech" or "is there a problem with islam" when it's all but a false debate, but a structural issue that should be discussed as why the society manage to create such individuals and why the french children issued from the algerian immigration still don't feel accepted by their society 50 years after. Which is definitely not new and much bigger than me

-
Eloquently put, though I'm certain this sort of segregation isn't happening in just France. It may be that tensions are greater because of the colonial past in France, but it's hardly the only country that practices blatant Islamophobia/xenophobia.
I'm pondering this problem, as it seemingly has been solved in the US - at least when counting places of mass migration and various cultures, like big cities. Why isn't the same behavior appropriated to big cities in Europe? It may not prevent terrorist groups entirely, but it would be a start if people stopped the passive hostility that has been going on towards fringe groups of society.
-
Wouldn't the passive hostility more likely be a reaction to some religious wacko's killing people because a cartoon depicting Mohammed?
I'm all for tolerance of race, don't get me wrong, but wouldn't it be nice to have a society without the pollution of religion? Think about it.
-
By all means. Do you have a realistic projection for when that's going to happen?

Please guys, this isn't the subject of this thread.

I didn't read the discussion above, but I completly disagree here, you can't blame the religion, the single thing you can blame is how the humans use their tools and how they behave with them. I consider the religions like tools, like idk, a knive or a nuclear shell, it's not the tool wich is bad, but the use of it. A knive doesn't say what you have to do with it, it's only the person that use it wich determine if he's going to do something good or bad.
So please don't blame the religions, blame the humans that are using their tools in a bad way, i'm atheist btw.

Yes, blame humankind. Still, I get what he's saying because it would be one less reason to fight about. We already have so many.
Regarding the whole Paris thing. I admire the French. When 9-11 happened the focus was on the terrorists. Making it all about them. Now, it's about the people who died and their rights. Everybody is celebrating what they did. Making more and more. To me, that says 'Fuck you' to the people responsible and I for one, can respect that.

It's ironic though, that before they were killed so many people were saying that satire was offensive and shouldn't be drawn.

Why? Humans are potentially really cool and unique. Religion isn't potentially really cool and definitely not unique. For people who are able to think critically and think for themselves, religion has no added value. I've been in a religious environment pretty long and I have never seen religion improve a person. It may help some people restrain deviant and harmful behavior but then again; independent and critical thinking takes care of that problem too and can take you much farther into your own personal development.
I just don't get the sympathy for religion. It brings close mindedness, violence, rejection, confinement, decline, you name it. Just look at the most religiously led countries and see what blessing religion is for this world. We just don't need it anymore tbh, and especially not something as violent and rigid like Islam.
I definitely don't hate religious people though (my mother is quite Christian) and I respect people regardless of their religion. I just cannot respect religion in itself. It has held the world back for so long ffs.
-
Because if it wasn't religion, it would be something else. It's the capacity for craziness that is the problem, not what type of crazy you get.
-
I don't completely agree. Of course, some people will use things like religion, insanity or perhaps a bad childhood as an excuse for their behavior. But you cannot deny the negative impact religion has on education and when push comes to shove most ''bad'' behavior is caused by lack of knowledge.
Knowledge, man.

I hate to talk about this shit on mapcore, simply because it's a very polarizing subject and more often than not creates friction among people and rarely a consensus is achieved, but dialog is the way to solve problems, dialog AND open minded research so I guess I'll open this one exception, here's my two cents and my own personal view.
I've been paying a lot more close attention to religion on and off for the past two years, and the more I know, the more I realize religion is the root of too many evils, wrong doings and deaths in the entire human life existence. It's poison to the human intellect, education and society.
Fortunately tho, minimal research will prove that our race is moving on and religious beliefs are slowly dying out, giving way to individual enlightenment, spiritualism and connection with nature, and that's what we need more of, not a organization based and built around death and deception that sole purpose is keeping you in check, controlled and making sure you're part of the sheep. It kinda makes my blood boil when I see people say: "Those comics shouldn't have disrespected that religion in the first place." That's taking the easy way out, ignoring the underlying problem, we need to have a discussion in regards to the religion problem, including Islam. By not talking about it and use 'respect for their beliefs' as an excuse for not talking about it, you're making it worse and giving in to fear. Since when did any topic become immune to discussion as long as there's the term "it's my beliefs" involved? If it's beliefs, it should not be shielded from criticism or to be talked about, quite the contrary, not talking about it will never stop the violence, but it can make us all slaves to a religion we may not even share (or a religion we actively reject). Politicians dictating their decisions basesdon the christian bible here in the US is another good practical example. I for one share the philosophy of Charlie Ebdoe's recently murdered editor: 'I would rather die while standing than live on my knees.' of a organized religion that looks up to a invisible friend and lives their life based on a book full of death and rape written more than a thousand years ago in a whole different civilization all together. But yeah, a lot of people simply don't understand that the way to expose problems is to test them. When we engage in satire and it drives people to KILL, the problem is with the people who want to kill....not the satire! The last thing we should do is cede to the will of Islam (or any religious edict).

Ive moved into a pretty fantastic Apartment with my two friends. Its great.
