How much to save if you want to retire with 1 million

but after 40 years 1 million is only worth 100.000 ?!?!?! so why bother?
I was quite surprised when I did some basic crunching to see how interest can build up. Definitely more than you might assume. Even more so if you use one of these fancy funds that invests it, unless they lose it all I guess. 
Decided to stay put for now in my flat

My apartment has gone up so much in value the last few years, this is good and also very bad, cause I would like to move to a large apartment, but if I sell this I will need to put up so much more money just to get an additional room, OR move out of the city. I guess if you have a house, it's a bit more safe with space - I have one room =)
