You're right, Erdogan's government has breached human rights in many quarters, especially being the nation that has jailed the most journalists in the world. Still, the EU is ignoring abuses in their own member states, The baltic nations for instance have oppressed and denied the rights of Russians who live in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. They are classed as non-citizens, they have no rights to vote, the Russian language is highly imposed on and they face daily descrimination at work and general hostility in daily life. Minority Serbs in Croatia in the former Krajina areas like Vukovar are destriminated against too, many of those that once lived in the area but were forced to leave after Operation Storm have been denied the right to return and the European Court Of Human Rights has refused to be involved, stating it has no juristiction over the government's practices. Point is, EU turns a blind eye to human rights abuses if it's not in their "interests", for whatever reason.

Hard to say, they have a lot of bases around the country and they're one of the five major parties active in Ukraine, but their support mostly comes from Western Ukraine where the anti-Russian "Slava Ukrayini!" sentiment is high, hence the reason for some the divisions that exist.

I still don't understand why they kept advancing to police lines... the protest camp was down the hill.. they had no reason to go towards the police like that, yet they kept advancing. It's a terrible loss of life... but I can't but think of that phrase "play stupid games, win stupid prizes".

The parliament has passed an law (which is pretty much illegal given that they haven't been elected) making Ukrainian the official language of the state and rescinded the legal laws allowing Russian as the first language in certain areas where speakers are the majority. This basically means that all areas including Odessa where 90% of the population speak Russian and the Crimea which is populated with 70% ethnic Russians and tartars must use Ukrainian in all official means.
We're now seeing massive rallies against the Euromaidan and new government in several Eastern cities...

In Kerch the Russian flag was put on the Administrative building.
In Donetsk, Berkut (police) that left Kiev have arrived back in their home town and greeted by thousands of crowds praising them as heroes:
...and the US is warning Russia not to send troops to Ukraine, somehow forgetting they have an entire fleet already in the Black Sea port in the Crimea

D3 I know you're into your Eastern Bloc and everything, but can you stop being an apologist for a moment and just join the rest of the world in agreeing that this is some fucked up shit? There's absolutely no situation where it's appropriate for snipers of the authorities to be gunning down civilians — and especially not in circumstances as described.
"It's a terrible loss of life... but I can't but think of that phrase 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes'" is the kind of thing I'd expect a dictator to say after torching a town to the ground because its people took issue with his policies. I mean, really? Did that girl who recently got shot in the head deserve it because she threw eggs at some dude's car?
I think most of us are past the point of even caring about the politics and backstory, and just want to vent disapproval of such indiscriminate and unnecessary killing. Who's more in the wrong and what barely armed civilians did to deserve having their heads blown open by a sharpshooter is kind of besides the point.
I don't know how else I can explain this... the previous day over 10 officers had been killed, previous to that 6 other officers had died in various clashes. The day after snipers were firing on police positions away from the protest camp, several were injured. After that the SBU were brought in with live ammo, likely issued to them because they didn't want a repeat of the previous day in order to keep control. They set up a cordon at the very top of Instytutska Street, this is it:

If you see the picture, you can see the central square of the Maidan down the road, this is where the protesters were. The SBU did not advance into the line of the protest camp and open fire on people, people kept coming up the hill towards them. Why did they do this? I have yet to hear anyone explain why they did this, the authorities were nowhere near the camp (apart from unarmed berkut in some places). Some of the people who came up the road towards them were spotted with guns, so the authorities opened fire... instead of the people retreating away from police lines... they. kept. advancing.
If an armed police unit in the UK set a cordon and no civilians are supposed to come near it and people do... they will at the very least fire warning shots.. if you're seen with a weapon, you'll be shot at directly. If it was the US, they probably wouldn't hesitate to kill you right there and then.
If the SBU had advanced towards the protest camp and started firing on people, my reaction to this would be very different believe me but they didn't, they kept away at the top of the hill. Don't get me wrong, the authorities were heavy handed and indiscriminate in the response towards them and an investigation will need to be carried out to determine who was responsible and what exactly happened in detail, especially those that fired on the medical staff that were trying to help. But aside from that, I reliterate... If you keep advancing towards armed authorities when you're told to go back.. it's best to listen to them, unless you want to get shot at.
I'm a realist... it runs in the family. It doesn't mean I don't care but if I aired shock at everything shit happening in the world it would be a very long list..
As for that last bit... Of course it isn't ok to shoot someone who throws eggs at your car, how is that in anyway comparable to what we're discussing here? Come on...

How is your reading comprehension? I said nothing of the sort. Also it was SBU (interior forces) that fired at the protesters not berkut.
Then again, if the protester were pro-russia you would have defended them like nothing else and called out on the police brutality.
It wouldn't make any difference, but you'll just have to take my word on that given no pro-Russian protesters have been shot at...

Some people are talking about the direction of fire, the security services are clearly being fired upon but they appear to be firing in the direction of buildings not down the street. Some people are suggesting that the snipers that had targeted police earlier on in the day could be the ones firing on the protesters and the SBU are firing back in their direction. This is still far from an open and shut case...

This! There's always two sides to a story. Personally I don't think the police is to blame, or the protesters. I think the blame lies at the top to let this slide so far out of control.

I was going to point out about the Turkish problems with human rights… though I remember the membership was denied because they have (had?) death penalty. Dunno if it's (still) true.
Very sad to hear about the snipers… I remember they were doing the same in the Balcans war in 91
Dunno how good are the intentions of protesters, but as a general rule of thumb, I support change. Usually is then their leaders that then take advantage of what has been done.
