I can honestly say that every time I am in a full server that switches to any of these maps, there is a serious shit storm of people bitching and leaving the server. Are CS players just THAT unable to play new things?

Oh gawd i thought people would storm in, with CSGO the new (and wonderful) maps the community is pushing got much more attention than what was happening at CSS times.

As I said a few times before, if you actually play Operation Payback via the matchmaking system as it's intended to be played, then you'll see that quite a few players are playing the maps.

What Puddy said. I've had some great fun playing these custom maps, which would probably not have been possible if it wasn't for Operation Payback. Big thanks to Valve!

I did this twice in a row. It put me in the same server twice. So how many people are actually playing them?

Also I dont think its the quality of the maps, but the fact that most are CS maps as opposed to DE. Also if Valve is to be used as an example for picking up maps in previous games (ie TF2) they have some WEIRD ass choices sometimes. Look at ctf_turbine!

EDIT: I enjoy the maps a lot myself. Thunder is really fun (if a bit slow due to its size)

I'd expect no less, it would be weird to have people participating in the thing and then wine about. But a point can still be made about public servers (right?).

I don't think CS:GO players are outright embracing Operation Payback, but it's definitely not being dismissed imho. If I had to guess I'd say that Op Payback speaks to about 2-10% of CS:GO owners, which is fair enough.

Yeah, why pay when you can have it for free?

As far as I know, 3% is like a standard target in conversion rate, so good enough to say the least.

But i wanted to echo Jean Paul on the fact that community may seem to not embrace new maps (as well as in the past?). I'm not playing CSGO, so I don't have an idea, but i'm curious. It's an impression I always had since when I was playing dod and then cs (pre-steam, pre-source): the latter community seems less interested in playing new maps. Then, in general, since Source versions, custom maps seem even less played. (Not talking about TF2.)

People are happy to follow Valve's lead, but they refuse to adapt to new stuff because there is a default assumption that unless it's packaged with the game, it isn't up to snuff. Certain things are only available through alternative means (surf maps, climbing maps, aim maps, etc) but for the most part those probably get played at really marginal rates as well.

I wrote a bunch of stuff about how getting in officially would be better for custom mappers, but actually that sounded like outdated logic. Only a handful of maps get the vast majority of play in CS, it's not like the old days where merely being official was enough to get play. Now, even official maps that the community doesn't like get ignored. It's very tough to break through, and OP is a good way to see what sticks because it engenders a wave of publicity surrounding the launch.

People have always preferred a handful of maps in any FPS I've played, but what is new in CS:GO is Valve's direct involvement. Now it's up to the mappers AND Valve to get the map over the first initial hill of getting people to try it (without Valve's help, nobody would). It used to be Valve was sort of hands off... more of a skimming process, less of a fishing role.

The part that concerns me a bit is that new maps aren't looked at as permanent fixtures in the landscape, but as "events" that border on gimmicks. Then again, if a map is absolutely amazing, I'm sure it would be put in permanently.

tl;dr: Valve is getting more efficient at doing what they've always done, which is watching for the best content, but they're also very wisely rewarding mappers both financially and in experience so as to encourage more production, even if this comes at a slight and perhaps imaginary cost in prestige (quasi-official status)

so to end the speculation, it was a very generous promotion. money is not something i like to talk about, but i feel obligated to say that for me, it's a big help in my life.

bottom line is go make maps, do yhour passion, make some art, good things will happen.

Downtown and Seaside were made by the same guy, and I think he did it alone, so he probably did real well.
