Update: You, the shopper, won't have to pay the activation fee for a used Xbox One game - the shop will. Therefore, the price you see on a second-hand Xbox One game in a shop is the price you'll pay to be able to play it.That's what a high-ranking UK industry source explained to me this afternoon.

The reason there's all this confusion is because Microsoft hasn't decided what the activation fee will be yet. The £35 figure reported in the story below sounds too high - perhaps it includes the shop's sale price as well.

My source confirmed that part of that activation fee will go to a publisher and part to Microsoft.

Sorry SpronyvanJohnson, I don't see it in that article either anyways, these rumors are all in contrast, i had enough, i don't even wanna know more until MS says itself.

What is clear is you can trade games, possibly you will be discouraged in doing so, and buying used will probably cost more than today (but here i guess retailers will have to accept a lesser income and deal with it).

You pay a fee to "borrow" (read: rent) a game (which i think it's good, if much less than the 35$ figure flying around), and you obviously pay full price to own it digitally.

The other scary ruomor is about the "daily ping" to Live... seems like people are afraid the console will brick if you are not connected longer than that, which is kinda ridiculous.

Anyways, I don't think that anyone that is using Steam is going to worry, i mean really, for how long and how usually you have outages? I mean, I don't worry about that, and in Italy we really have a shitty network, and I mean there are still towns without the most basic ADSL, or cities that are maxed out so you get 3G or nothing.

    lots of text

I agree about the rumors. Let's wait for something official. But regarding the article. Yes, retailers will pay that fee but where do you think they'll get it from? From us of course. You'll get less back for your games because they have the pay for it now. So indirectly, we're paying for it. That's besides the other fees that are mentioned. However you interpret these articles it all comes down to us paying more and crushing the second hand market.

Ironically EA discontinued it's Online Pass recently. I wonder if that has something to do with this as well.

Ok, so I got it right the first time – indirect cost. Gamestop is robbing the gamer reselling anyways.

I don't care where the second-hand market ends up, I considered very hypocrite of the publishers to say "we hate the second hand market because we loose profit" and then sell unlocks (for multiplayer) modes for used games... instead of limiting it, they just endorsed it (and even offered a cheaper way afterall).

For "throw-away" games, i'd welcome a rental mechanism which lets me play a full game over a few days, and then i can put a little more money if I want to own it completely.

I actually don't mind all the used game stuff, I never buy used games and it was inevitable that publishers would find a way of controlling it. Things like Steam have already put an end to it for many PC gamers, and for console gamers it'll still be possible to get cheaper used games — just with less benefit to the sellers. Overall it means publishers will get money from sales that'd otherwise bring nothing to them, which is fair enough IMO and in a utopian world might even lead to console games being as cheap as PC games.

What I do vehemently disagree with is the online requirement. Microsoft's blatant attempt at damage control by revealing that it's 'only' every 24 hours rather than constantly means shit. It's still a lot worse than what we enjoy now. I can and have gone for weeks without an internet connection on numerous occasions, for example when moving home or when switching provider. During those periods it's even more vital than ever that I have a games console on hand to combat the immense stresses of being without online connectivity.

I'm sure for most people it'll very rarely be a concern, but when it does become a problem for someone it's likely to become a serious business problem. I know a few people (including my gf) who don't actually have internet connections at home because the monthly bill is a bit much — they do all their web browsing through their phones' 3G instead. Yet these same people happily enjoy gaming during their free time at home, something they'll not be able to do with the Xbox One by the looks of it.

Last gen I bought a lot of used games off amazon, it's why I built a collection of 60 PS3 games and it allowed me to sample lots of different games. If that goes, consoles are fairly worthless to me unless they have steam style sales (221 games and counting).

By the way, something that's been bugging me ever since I first saw how it looked was the sorta crossed material look. I know there's a huge ass fan underneath there and it wouldn't make any sense to have the grills over the Bluray drive, but it looks better like this IMO. Fixed it here

Apparently it never was constantly online, as for the 24h, in the linked articles around here they say that was a scenario Harrison illustrated (this is damage control to me).

It's clearly something they can throttle by hitting a switch on their servers, so after all this noise, i'm expecting them to announce a once-per-week ping to the mothership.

Still, as you say, it's annoying. What they are doing is making you feel a guest in your own house: if they don't trust us, why should we trust them?

And about used games, a thing that just hit me: if the console breaks after the warranty expires, i must buy a new one, so should i "second hand" redeem my own games, or do they have a friendly procedure to transition my rights to the new one?

Good point. Considering the shitload of red lights that happened on the xbox, that would be a huge problem.

I'd assume they'd be tied to your account, not your console. So if you break your console you just log in into your account on a new one. Possibly

«This isn't the end for Xbox 360. Microsoft is "shooting for" another 25 million units sold over the next five years»the firm's senior Vice President of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi has told OXM «you'll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One.»Microsoft is planning http://www.oxm.co.uk/54572/huge-xbo…for-many-years/http://www.oxm.co.uk/54572/huge-xbo…for-many-years/a huge Xbox 360-related announcement at E3http://www.oxm.co.uk/54572/huge-xbo…for-many-years/http://www.oxm.co.uk/54572/huge-xbo…for-many-years/, which it promises will «keep the console vibrant for years».Microsoft Game Studios exec Phil Spencer has declared that the company will continue to support the Xbox 360 platform for "years to come,".Speaking to Gamespot, Spencer also claimed «I think the [Xbox 360] is going to be very vibrant for many years. In fact, we have a huge [Xbox 360] announcement for E3 that I keep wanting to talk about, but I can't» Spencer said. «I think it will surprise people. I loved what we did last year with Minecraft; bring Minecraft to the box; six million units later it's kind of a beast. I think there's a lot of life in the [Xbox 360] for years to come.» Corwin: yes, you can definitely just log to a new console and play, this wouldn't be different than the scenario they outlined when explaining how you will be able to play a game at friends. But in all those articles, it's clearly reported that a game will be tied both to an account AND console.

Why is that, because otherwise only one person would be able to play that game on his One. But I understand they said that "any account on the console where a game is activated, can play that game" so, if I had a brother, he would be able to play the game I bought (and have his own saves, achievements etc.).

Now what happens in the aformentioned scenario, when I change my hardware? If you have one owner of a given game, only he can play on a different console, that means that if I buy Halo 5, my fantasy brother cannot bring it to a friend to play it in split-screen. If everybody who has an account on a given console is considered a owner, everybody can play on different consoles... that would be awesome, but would also mean that if my friends all have accounts on my console, I can lend them games and they can play those and earn achievements (which is in contrast to what they explained talking about playing at friends).

To prevent this trick, your gamer's account must be uniquely tied to the console too. That means, when you change a console you have at least to transition you gamer's account, and the games association will follow you automagically.

Does that make sense? It was difficult even for me to explain/follow this reasoning the only thing clear is that DRMs are just a burden when too strict, and it is annoying, again: i'm guest in my own house.

    LMAO!

Ah man, dogs (Fable 2) and fish (Mario 64). Microsoft sure knows how to excite an audience.

It shows how crazily warped their understanding of what games want has become, that they thought those were killer things to highlight.
