Doing PBR on idtech5 would probably require about 3-5x the memory. It's no longer a single map, diffuse, normal, ao, spec, roughness etc needs to be stored separately. A game like wolfenstein would be like 200 GB doing this.. which is a little ridiculous

isn't it using all those maps already? how would they do dynamic lighting in wolfenstein and rage?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/doom-…-visual-quality I wonder what happened do the development since 2008. The four year cycle has already happened and Carmarck has left ID.

Rage was defintly downgraded to fit in DVDs and memory constrains of consoles.

It doesn't guarantee anything and I still don't believe it will be any good but at least they recognize current affairs which is a positive development.

Doom needs to prove itself all over again after a lengthy absence, according to Pete Hines, Bethesda's VP of marketing and PR.

Having successfully rebooted "a bit of a tarnished brand" in Wolfenstein with this year's The New Order, Hines said the company has similar ambitions for id Software's upcoming shooter. Hines said of Wolfenstein in the latest issue of MCV (via OXM): "The last couple of games were either 'ok' or 'not great'. It wasn't a franchise where people were desperate for the next one. Wolfenstein isn't Uncharted. We knew this would take some explaining. But developer Machine Games has now untarnished the IP.

"We view that similarly to Wolfenstein, because it's been so long since the last Doom game," Hines continued. "We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again. We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome". "We are going to have to prove that this is something that's going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can't be: 'It's Doom, of course you're going to play it'. But that just makes us work harder." It was confirmed in April 2013 that Doom 4 had been "rebooted" after a prototype failed to "exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect".

I bet if you gave Machine Games the Doom IP they'd do a great job with it like Wolf.

Hell yeah. I'm really curious as to what they have in store for the sequel to Wolf though.

Regarding Doom, just read the Quakecon stuff will be behind private doors. But some cellphone footage will undoubtedly turn up.

Thinking about it, they are promoting the beta in a big way. Normally publishers choose to hide the actual game and even withhold reviews until the release day. This is the old school way. Which they wouldn't do if they weren't that confident about it in the first place. Think about it.

Does anyone know what (if any) other shooters the Machine Games level designers have worked on?

I'm a bit annoyed that the Doom reveal is private. They could at least have made that clear in the teaser trailer. Cellphones are all well and good, but for something like that you really want proper HD video.

Thats the thing, the cellphone videos 'leaks' always looked better than the HD footage

They need to focus on things that doom and doom2 could do that current engines cant do. Namely things like a huge complexity threshold. For instance in doom/doom2 you could have 1 or 300 enemies with little to no fps difference. I don't mind a graphical downgrade if those gameplay-related changes can be achieved on a modern engine.

Maybe they just want to see the reaction, if is good they're gonna reveal to public? But yeah, don't see why they bothered teasing if this is what's we are not gonna get...

Have you played Wolfenstein?! The game looks absolutely awesome, sharp and the levels have a very handcrafted look to them because they can easily hide seams with stamps (decals) that later get baked into the textures, and they don't need to worry about resusage as much as we do. (At least not from the technical point of view)

Rage was the very first game released with this tech, therefor it came out with it's fair share of problems, wolfenstein was just the first iteration and it's already looking amazing. Also, it's worth mentioning that Wolfenstein is also a PS3/Xbox360 game, imagine the next game that'll run on idtech5, it'll probably be next-gen only, materials will most likely have PBR and way more memory buffer to play around with.

The ONLY fault of megatextures was because it was way ahead of it's time.

Actually, the problem was that they wanted it on consoles when it should have been next gen aimed at high end PCs. It wasn't really ahead of its time really.

    But that aside...

Megatextures increase the difficulty of the development process at no significant visual gain when compared to the standard Crytek or Unreal development pipeline. Its spinning the hamster wheel plain and simple. Show me a screenshot of the new Wolfenstein, sure I see your point, but its folly to say UE4 or Crytek engines cant match its quality at a fraction of the effort.

In fact, ill say that the days where having normal maps and specular is even a discussion are long gone. These days if every single material isn't a separate set of functions with a verity of variables its going to look dated. A huge amount of visual fidelity relies on complex materials with tons of dynamic features.

I hope Doom 4 is going to be great, I want a new Doom damn it. Unless megatextures suddenly become super amazing I am highly skeptical the tech will be regarded as next gen or even current gen.

id Software unveiled the new Doom game to attendees of its QuakeCon event in Dallas, Texas on Thursday. The game, simply titled 'Doom', was shown running at 1080p and 60fps at the event, where id Software confirmed it to be built on its new id Tech 6 game engine. A single-player demo was shown at the event, according the Twitter accounts of several in attendance. The demo revealed a Mars setting, which is once again under assault by demons from Hell. Scenes both inside and outside of the UAC research facility were shown. Attendees describe impressive particle effects and environmental detail, with an art style not too dissimilar from Doom 3. Other familiarities include several iconic enemies, and the return of fan-favorite weapons including the chainsaw and double-barrel shotgun. The new Doom, however, will feature a heavy focus on melee combat, revealed id. "A key feature will be stunning enemies with a shot, then smashing their face with your boots. It's happened five times already," described PC Gamer via Twitter. Players will be able to rip off the limbs of enemies, it was revealed. In one scene, id demonstrated ripping off the arm of an enemy guard and placing his severed hand on a hand-scanner to unlock a door. The demo concluded with a brief appearance from the horned giant that was seen in the E3 teaser trailer. "Fast paced competitive multiplayer" is promised, but id wasn't ready to talk about it at the show, saying it'll deliver more info "later". The new Doom will be an Origin game, the developer confirmed, although it's unclear if this means it will be permanently exclusive to EA's digital distribution service. id is yet to confirm when it reveal the game to general public since having pledged to give QuakeCon attendees an exclusive first-look. "We'll have plenty more to show everyone at a later date, but we didn't want another QuakeCon to go by without doing something special for the amazing QC community and id supporters that have been with us for more than 20 years," said the firm earlier this month. In April 2013, it was confirmed that the new Doom had been "rebooted" after a prototype failed to "exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect".

Some are speculating that by 'origin' game they simply meant the game is going back to the origins of the Doom story, rather than anything to do with the EA Origin service

Yeah, it's misunderstood. It would make no sense to do that. Plus, Bethesda has always gond with Steam and the Steam Workshop. No, not going to happen so you can put away that pitchfork Dux

I am currently working on a map for GZDoom with Brutal doom as its base. Maybe that can counts as Doom 4... So far there have been no reboots, I'm not disenfranchised, I have good organizational skills, pre-production started less than a week ago. lol
