Not unless the game doesn't work at all or if the steam page is full of lies. I've bought it from the Humble store, but I don't know if they do refunds either.

Ouch. Guess I won't be picking this one up

wow I had no idea it would be so different. I never realized that the chinese room was the developer, i thought it would be a fairly straightforward sequel.
I must admit I'm still playing the original. I took a hiatus until the drycleaner can get the shit out of my pants.

Christ. I was going to make a post saying you guys were overreacting, then I played the last ~90 minutes of the game.
QuoteIf I was to rate each of the 4 hours of the game from 1 (garbage) to 5 (amazing), it would go 3,4,3,2. At least some of the redeeming qualities were the greatly improved environment art over the first one. Unfortunately much of that gave way when you spent most of the game going through sewers and other nonsensical level designs. The story and voice acting wasn't as simple or well done as Amnesia, even at times the voice acting and writing felt very Dear Esther-y. I died three times, each time felt very cheap (two of which before I even knew I was in danger I was pinned in a dead end). The motion blur + slowed movement whenever lengthy dialog was happening became so god damn annoying. The puzzles mostly came down to you flipping or twisting a bunch of shit that didn't make any sense, then later you found out what you had to do, rather than the other way around. I got lost a bunch of times which kills any immersion or suspense that the game is trying so hard to build. WTF was that electrified pig?
I loved Amnesia but did not love this. 3/5 I am disappoint

Still haven't had time to play it but here's a (slightly annoyed) article from the director/composer of the game:
http://www.edge-online.com/features/the-i…tening-concept/
I gotta say I both agree and disagree... I like all the diversity we have in games at the moment and I like what they're trying to do, but it doesn't mean that it should be incompatible with gameplay mechanics... hah...

If they call the game Amnesia, they better release an Amnesia-esque game...
False advertising, is that what caused the most outrage?I still haven't touched the game though, partly because everyone keeps saying the game plays nothing like The Dark Descent so my hype-o-meter dropped straight to 0.
Read the article, sure you can release a game that deviates from the norm, just don't call it Amnesia FFS xD

My immediate reaction is that this is an attempt to justify the inability (be it a lack of resources, or desire to do so) to make an actual... game...
"The Chinese Room is unusual in that a writer and a composer head up the company." Uh-oh. "Mechanics will probably never be our core focus as they’re not the reason we’re driven to create." Double uh-oh. I had a lot of words here about why games need to be fun to play, but honestly its such an elementary concept that you either get it or you don't, and it appears from reading that article that we're dealing with a "don't" situation

she's just regurgitating the most common argument in defense of minimalist (mechanics) design and completely ignoring the actual criticism against the game. I don't have anything against games like that and I think some of them are very interesting, but the issue here seems to be that they've removed vital components of the original game that made it flow/pace stimulatingly. the issue isn't that the game has X less mechanics than the original. so pointless...
