Another Gamasutra salary survey has launched. I'm always very interested to see the results of these.

The survey takes approximately 7 minutes to complete, and will run until Friday, February 22nd. The results will be published in the April 2013

I'm always very interested to see how much more everyone else is earning.

lol I don't really see the harm in sending it around, it's anonymous anyway. I've sent it around to my team rather than studio wide and just asked them to forward it on

Well I just don't wanna be that guy that's so interested in knowing what everyone else is making. Might be looking into things too much but better safe than sorry I think it's interesting though if that information is out there.

Can someone tell me what is the point of filling out a survey that still doesn't acknowledge level design as a job role? I think I will email them and ask a similar question.

I did notice that, it's a shame they didn't add it as a role but I just put Game Designer. Apparently they only recently added Technical Artist too.

I emailed Gamasutra re-guarding this. I'm hoping to see a result but not counting on it this year.

Isn't level design just a subgenre of game design to begin with? At least that's how I always viewed it, often you find yourself designing game systems next to your level design duties. But I suppose that depends from studio to studio.

It does seem quite studio dependant. I've got friends at other studios where game designer and level designer are the same thing and then look at somewhere like Codemasters and Level Designers and Games Designers are quite separate. On top of that you have Quest/Mission designers too though.

I'd still be happy to class them all as Game Design though personally.

It does depend on some companies but they are completely different jobs and pay grades in the development of AAA games. Classing them as Game Design is the reason why the results are always overinflated.

I just bought the April edition as I couldn't find the results posted anywhere public.

Just made an imgur gallery for anyone interested:

    Thank you, Jord!

Is it really what I'm seeing? The more you study, the less you get paid?

Gotta remember that you didn't use to need a degree to work in the industry, so the people at the top/higher earners don't have degrees.

Yeah, I believe the degrees mean nothing, but I think that's quite interesting still...

From working at a company that is nothing but doctorates and masters degree people mostly i think I can see why they get paid less.

I wrote a long post about this then realized I had 5 beers and should probably write this on a sober mind (especially considering I work for a research company).

A quick answer is that high level degree students at universities have a level of complacency that is acquired over time.
