Switching between resolutions while in the middle of play would be extremely noticeable on any TV above about 36 inches so I definitely hope that doesn't ever happen. That sounds incredibly distracting to me, especially with static elements like HUDs. If I had to choose, I'd always take an FPS drop before a resolution drop so long as it doesn't go below 30 FPS.

We used to do that at Starbreeze. For years we've had adaptive resolution (I wasn't there at the time but since the 1st riddick in 2004 I think) and yes it's noticeable sometimes when a lot is happening on screen but I personally take that anytime to a slowdown under 30fps.

Of course people should never take that as an excuse for poor optimization but I think it's "ok" to do that as a last resort kind of thing (as long as it's done correctly and doesn't look too much like poop!)

Yes. PS3 and Xbox 360 came when Shader Model 3.0 was relatively new and video cards like Geforce FX were pretty common, with buffers of 128MB - 256MB. And triple core, eight SPUs Cell, that was overkill compared to the relatively new dual core CPUs. What were the most demanding PC games of that era? Doom 3 and Far Cry?

Nowdays every game is pushing multi threading, buffers with over 1000 MBs and the ever increasing GPU power.

I'm a bit confused currently following the news about both BF4 and COD running better on PS4, being a 360 owner currently (also have a PS3 but only for exclusives)...can't decide which to go for. When MS announced the XB1 I was disappointed about many of the things most people were, 2nd hand game sales, Kinect being packaged with it, the lack of power compared to PS4 etc. MS seemed to turn a lot of that around (except the price, I don't want a Kinect) and I thought for a while I was back on for getting an XB1 over a PS4.

To me, the XB1 has Titanfall which looks awesome and DLC exclusives for games like COD and BF which I like playing, but is also more expensive and has these apparent issues with running games in certain resolutions, some are saying it may always be the graphical underdog this generation. The P34 on the other hand sounds cheaper and more powerful, however they haven't got any exclusives I'm particularly bothered about (Killzone is something I would play though). What do I do...

Either way I'm not getting anything until January when there are sales and cheap bundles

All I can say as someone who owned both is that the PS3 was pretty much excellent from day one, whereas the Xbox 360 was (IMO) a bag of shit both in terms of hardware and the OS. I think they're doing much better this time around, but I can't help but see Sony as the one that brings quality to everything it does and I expect the PS4 to deliver in every way I'm hoping. I also enjoyed more PS3 exclusives (including some smaller but incredible titles like Journey) compared to 360 exclusives.

I'll definitely own both the PS4 and XBone, but I'm going with the PS4 first. If history repeats itself, it'll be the superior console for at least the first year — by which point both will become cheaper anyway. It looks like the few issues the PS3 had (i.e. weird architecture) have not just been solved, but better than Microsoft's attempt.

There's probably a touch of early development issues here, but the fact that the XBone version of Battlefield 4 demoed so far lacks some shader/detail effects and runs in a lower resolution — and now similar for Ghosts — isn't doing Microsoft any favours. Still, I expect the XBone to have some excellent exclusives where cross-platform differences are irrelevant (Zoo Tycoon is actually my most anticipated next-gen game right now lmao), so as a die-hard gamer I will own one.

Yeah I'll be adding one of those to my collection too. Holy shit man, going to need to clear out some room on my TV stand considering that these consoles are coming with camera units too.

Yet! Just wait for whatever Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog and others are doing. Also, Infamous Second Son will be awesome for sure.

At this point, I honestly can't see why anyone would buy a XBoxOne, and the fact that you mentioned that with it you're gonna get "extra DLC's on it" it's proving that you're grasping for straws there really.

And look man, I'm a developer and if it was up to me, both consoles should sell 100 million each and both would sucede like a mother fucker, but right now It's looking really bad for Microsoft. I hope they manage to turn the situation around in a few years time.

That said, unless you're REALLY looking forward to get your hands on the fresh breeze of next gen, there's not a lot of incentive to do it right away, the launch titles even though this is the best launch titles list from any console ever released, it's still a short list and many of them are cross platforms.

No PGR for Xbox is a goddamn travesty. Even if you could see it coming 4 years out. Forza doesn't fill those shoes and I honestly can't think of anything else off hand.

Killzone is a solid launch title but that's really it.

Yep you're right, I guess my point was looking at the launch titles I'm not sure which console to get first and which would therefore probably be my primary console, as the 360 was this generation. It's an expensive commitment even to get one of them and whichever I get will also be the one a couple of friends and my brother get too, as we always play games like COD and BF together. I will end up getting both for the exclusives eventually as I particularly like Naughty Dog's output, Infamous looks cool but then so did the first two and I ended up preferring Prototype over either of those, never been into God of War. The DLC remark was just because I always get the DLC for COD, it's not a game changer for me to get it early by any means

And yeah like I said I won't be getting anything until January anyway, launch prices are too expensive. Disappointed that games have gone up in price too, but then I suppose that's inevitable. Killzone is listed as £60 for the default game on UK site SimplyGames at launch, though by comparison new games on there for 360 are commonly around £35-£40

Yeah...I wouldn't bother with a console if most of the games released for it are going to be 720p, especially when 4k TVs are going to become the standard. :\

4k is never going to be a standard IMO. TV fidelity hit the 'so good that we don't need any better' level with 1080p, the same way that CDs did many years ago.

Unless you're literally sitting right next to a 70-inch TV I can't see the use of higher. It's not like with monitors where you can appreciate ultra-high pixel density.
