Syria in Ruins

    Well, shit. The BBC decided to totally ruin my evening by airing footage of a village massacre that apparently happened today. Loads of footage of houses filled with women and children and them all shot dead, graphic as fuck. Makes those scenes in the last Rambo look tame.

    Presumably not by coincidence the EU has lifted its embargo on supplying the rebels with weaponry today, with Russia reacting by providing the government with anti-air gear. So basically it's just getting even more complicated and presumably even worse. Pisses me off so much that this kind of massacring is going on with no end in sight.

    I can't say I disagree with what the Russians said: that pumping more weapons into an already volatile country is madness. But fuck, what is anyone meant to do to bring this shit to an end? Are more and more villages going to be virtually genocided or what?

    Haha, yes I was going to say something like that in brackets. At least I'm doing my first-world problem duty of caring about the situation as opposed to not at all like seemingly anyone I've ever mentioned the Syria conflict to.

    Not that I'm condoning it but it makes things like that soldier murder thing that's been dominating the news and pub conversations in the UK for the past week look laughably minor.

    The Bayda and Baniyas massacres happened back in 2/3 May and like the Darayya and Al-Qubeir killings, government forces are widely reported to be responsible but as with a lot of things in the conflict, it's impossible to tell. Whoever from whatever side carried out the atrocities, there's a special place for them in the deepest reaches of Hell.

    The decision to lift the embargo is stupidity, I'm sure there are moderate forces amongst rebel forces but being able to make sure they and only they get the weapons sent is going to be near impossible imho. The FSA has a bad track record in the conflict, looting shops, charging people high prices for essentials, kidnapping, executions and other activities.. rebel controlled Aleppo is a nightmare for the people stuck there.

    Also just because the moderates get weapons doesn't mean they will definately gain the upper hand, they lack training and have poor combat skills, the likes of al-Nusra, Ahrar al sham and Chechen Ikeria fighters would likely wipe the floor with them if challenged, islamists and secular forces have already started fighting each other...

    The course of the war itself is also changing, rebel forces were making some signifant gains in what was largely a war of attrition but now the government has retaken some of those areas like Baba Amr and other parts of Homs and is steadily fighting a fierce battle to capture Al-Qusayr with Hezbollah joining in that fight.

    Understandably given that HZ are now openly involved, Israel is watching very closely and taking action when necessary.

    Really not sure why Russia would send Syria S-300 systems when they are likely to be just blown to pieces by the IDF once they've left Tartus...

    Peace talks in Geneva are upcoming with the joint Russia/US plan but I have my doubts that they will go anywhere, since it's all down to a group of foreign nations miles from Syria trying to convince fighters on the ground to lay down arms...

    that was actually really accurate. iran has also send troops to help bashar. seeing how iran, hezbollah and russia seem to back up the already superior syrian army, i don´t believe the outcome is going to be positive for the fsa/rebel splinter groups. whoever wins, the people of syria lose.

    Haha, I follow the conflict very closely, there's a big discussion on a forum which has people all over the world, many of whom are serving or have served in the armed forces of their respective nations.

    Honestly, I've yet to see concrete evidence that Revolutionary Guards are in Syria, other than bad propaganda where arab rebels are filmed pretending to be captured iranian soldiers speaking broken farsi...

    One of the sentiments that gets echoed by the people from all over during interviews, "everything was better before the revolution began" ...
