The Half-Life 3 thread of closure and memorium AKA what Tyler McVicker just said on YouTube

"I think it's kind of public knowledge that people know that it is being worked on, and so if I say 'yeah, I've seen some images, like some concept art of it,' you know, that wouldn't be big news. I guess I could say that I did see something that looked like kind of in the Half-Life universe. It wouldn't surprise anyone if I said 'yeah, they're working on it,' so I guess to go on a limb, I would say yeah, I did see some concept art for Half-Life 3.

The one thing I am really excited about is Left 4 Dead, the new Left 4 Dead... It wouldn't be any news if I said I saw it and it looks great. So, I was really excited when I saw that, I was like 'wow, this looks great'. Because I really loved Left 4 Dead, it's just one of those games that changed the industry." - Minh "Gooseman" Le

I locked this. Members have been complaining (and rightfully so) that every time this thread pops up they also get their hopes up and eventually leave in disappointment. There's nothing wrong with good fun. But this has happened on a few occasions now and people were very vocal about it. So it's about time we stop doing that. No more dream crushing here. Whenever there's legitimate Half Life 3 news, in like, 2167 or something, a Staff member can unlock this and we can all praise Gods gift to Gaming.

No, it's not coming! I'm not hear to crush dreams. However, I do feel that this is something worthy of proper discussion. So let's talk about it because I for one, certainly agree with this video. But keep in mind, let's not start trolling otherwise we'll be forced to lock the thread again.

I fully understand Valves decision. It's still sad :( I was hoping for it as the Source 2 demo game, but that won't happen i guess. Maybe we see a completely new game taking that role? What do you think?

€: And there's already a new chapter of the story. This didn't take long.

I think that Steam has become too big for them. Too big as in, it takes up a lot of resources. Games have become secondary and even the last couple of games were made in collaboration with different studios (not all of them). I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped with games all together (maybe turn into a publisher instead, buying up mods and stuff). Especially with the focus on Steam machines, Steam OS, VR and so on. Plus, nothing they make will ever live up to the hype. It's simply impossible.

There's no real vehicle for source 2.

Hl3 is still happening, I believe!

Why don't they expand their workforce to face the mass of things they have to do?

They'll keep doing games like Counter Strike because it is less time consuming since it lives through the community. Half life couldn't be made that much by the community because there is a real story :)

(They may be out living the hype, by waiting until you all die to release it :) )

Valve is constantly hiring, but in a uncommon way compared to the rest of the industry. If you want to know more about it, check that out: http://media.steampowered.com/apps/valve/Val…yeeHandbook.pdf

Very interesting to read, now I understand why they have trouble hiring in a massive way...

I don't really like that idea of "if Half-life 3 isn't perfect, then it will be a failure". I believe that it's still a good time to release a Valve game : even if it uses the same mechanics as the old ones, without being an open-world with a day/night cycle and everything... It can still be a great game.

I do believe that if you have fun and can immerse yourself in the story -> it's a success. The best example i have for that is my brother that i asked to play the Half-Life 2 games recently and he simply loved them. Of course it's old and valve should do better work on a HL3, but I really don't think everybody will hate them if Half-Life 3 isn't an incredibly amazing and innovative game (people might be disapointed but that can be it).

What bothers me is that we don't have any news from them and it's been 4 years since (the very good) Portal 2, HL3 or not they should release one game. And i don't see 2D/3D artists, level designers and writers suddenly working on VR and Steam marketing, it's simply not their job so they must work on some kind of game. And we know that they hired some people recently (Robert Briscoe for example).

And keep in mind that in that video, the "10 people working on HL3" is just a rumor and that's all there is, the rest is speculations.

Also, nothing about that whole story makes sense. 10 people working on story, just finished. Then "upper management" which doesn't exactly exist at valve, says "nope!" Well why did they finish the script in the first place?!
