    Hey guys,

i thought it's about time that i open a thread for the game that i'm working on. Insurgency 2 has been in development for about a year now and is scheduled to be released early next year. Game is based on Source Engine. Developed by a new studio (New World Interactice), which sits in Denver, Colorado. The small but fine team mostly consists of devs who worked on the original Insurgency mod.

We just released a new gameplay video that can be found here:

    http://%7boption%7d

Also feel free to check out our Kickstarter campaign and if you feel like it spread the word and/or pledge a couple bucks. Every bit of help is much appreciated

    http://%7boption%7d

The campaign had a slow start but hopefully it will pick up in the coming weeks. More updates and announcements are on the way which should help to create momentum.

If it's succesfull it will be a big help to give us enough time to give the game the polish that it deserves. We already have a solid base, most aspects of the game are working but especialy the environments are still quite rough around the edges as you can see in the gameplay video. And as many of you know this is a very time consuming task on Source Engine.

    Good luck with this!

It looks exactly the same as the first mod though. What's different about this?

Yea just like Black Mesa looks exactly like HL1, right? I mean obviously we didn't reinvent Insurgency but like 80% of the maps and art have been replaced by now with something a little more modern. Target is 100% for art and there are two old maps in the game which have been heavily altered and updated. There are limits to what can be done in Source engine and with a small team but it's not at all like we try to resell the old mod for cash. It's a new game properly where a lot of work and ressources went into.

Gameplay wise it's a little faster and more focussed than the mod.

Right now i'm a little torn between the many "meh fuck you guys. looks exactly the same" and "fuck you guys that isn't Insurgency anymore" comments

    Hey, cool !

    What are these maps ?

Are you using the same version of the Source Engine used for INS (mod) or the new one which is available with CS:GO or Portal 2 ?

    Good luck with your game

Baghdad and Ramadi are still there in the new game. We are using (updated) Portal 2 Engine.

I appreciate that you guys need money to live, but what is the incentive to buy this if it is no different from an already free mod out there?

Black Mesa is a terrible example as it is a free improved version of another game. Complete opposite of what you guys appear to be doing.

I never really played Insurgency so I'm not sure exactly how similar this is, but I did notice there's not very much in the video that makes it clear what's changed, what new features are in place, and basically why people should be interested. From the perspective of someone who casually watched a few Insurgency trailers and am now watching this, it does actually look like the same game — genuinely not trying to be an ass when I say this.

Obviously your existing fans are going to appreciate the differences as they know the game inside out, but for those of us who might actually pick this up you need to provide some reasons to want to give it a try rather than spin up another round of Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty. I'll probably give it a try anyway, just thinking of the broader audience really who may very well have no idea what Insurgency is or was and will just think 'looks a bit like CoD but not as pretty'.

It does look good though, freshness concerns aside. I was quite surprised to see such a great-looking large environment a bit further into the video, considering the engine. Definitely getting a lot out of Source.

This. There's this thing called business sense. Selling a product that is almost identical to a product you previously made available for free .... doesn't make much business sense. Nobody is going to give half a shit that the artwork has been marginally updated.

Vilham, the mod was eventualy abandoned by the guys that were in charge after most of the original team started working professional jobs. It hasn't been updated in years, will never be updated again and is pretty much outdated by now.

Insurgency 2 is a fresh start with almost entirely new content and updated gameplay. Why do people buy new iterations of old games (or not)? It's a question that you can ask for any sequel. I think everybody on the team is aware that Insurgency isn't the most innovative game ever. But it's just what we worked on as young guns with reasonable success and it's our best bet to get this new company going before we can work on a completely new IP. I think ther's still a niche for a low priced military shooter that's somewhere in the middle between hardcore military sims and the arcady gameplay of COD, CS and the likes otherwise nobody would have downloaded and played the mod back in the days.

Didn't meant my comment to be a stab at BM, quite the opposite. A few of our guys actualy worked on BM. Just pointing out the hypocrisy in PogoP's comment (who worked on BM) that he doesn't see any difference at all between the mod and the new footage. It's a sad state of affairs to read such comments (also including you marks) on a board where most people make a living from making games and should know better than your average videogame fanboy about the difficulties and hurdles of making a game or you know starting a new company. Call me thin skinned but for me it makes a difference if i read such remarks from another dev on a close-knit community like mapcore or the ramblings of a 12 year old prick on a random videogame board.

To be more clear, I think this definitely has the potential to be a success for you guys Steppenwolf — there's an established fan base, an experienced team, and a very strong foundation to work with. The key is marketing it well, which is harder than ever in today's competitive market where anything short of BF or CoD has to go to great lengths to convince people they're worth a try.

I think the main issue Pogo meant to highlight was the same one I did, which is that it doesn't look too different in the video. That isn't at all to say you guys haven't done a lot of great work, it's just that it needs to be shown a little more carefully and in a way that gets people drooling.

on a side note, the gameplay video was boring as fuck. really need soem better editing, would be nice to have a bunch of guys bullshit over "ventrilo" and setting up tactics and executing them to show off how insurgency could be played. the current video makes it feel like a fuck-ass boring modern warfare, which is really selling it short, and probably leading to a lot of these comments.

my fee for filming and editing a trailer is 5 trolleys of assorted vegetables, as is the standard rate in the industry.

I'm not sure exactly what the point is you're trying to make here. Yes, we know that making games is hard. Especially those of us that make a living from making them. Which is why when I hear about a startup involving devs from a community like this ... and it's yet another modern combat fps which (whether you like it or not) is going to be directly competing with behemoths like BF3 and CoD ... I just think come on, what the hell. Firstly that's just a stupid business proposition, and secondly why can't we do something original for once.

It's yet another case of an indie startup taking the colossal, unique advantages of being a small, low-budget outfit and throwing them out the window in order to enter (and attempt to compete in) a market which is anything but a level playing field. Thank god for kickstarter because you'd be fucked if you tried to pitch this to investors.

I said 'good luck' and then asked a simple question, I wasn't having a go at you at all, Steppenwolf.

Don't take it to heart, it was a genuine question. I loved Insurgency, it's great to see it up and running again and hopefully making some money.

I can see where you're coming from, the competition with BF and COD is worrying me aswell. I just don't like your condescending tone. Rick_D is the only one allowed to be an asshole on this here fine board

Fact is Insurgency is our baby, the mod already was in development before BF3 and COD:MW were announced. It's unfortunate for us that this competition exist but it's our background, our roots and the most solid base that we have right now to start something. Do you think we wouldn't enjoy to work on a completely new game? Believe it or not but it's actualy harder to find investors for that. We actualy worked on a prototype for another game before starting with INS2 but that would have been much harder to pull off at that point, starting completely from scratch on a new engine (CE3). Would have taken at least a year longer to develop. Do the math regarding development cost/risk. The eventual development of this game depends on the success of INS2. We have investors for INS2 btw. Otherwise we wouldn't be where we are now. There would be no game or company at all. Kickstarter will not make or break this project but if it works out certainly will improve the chances for success and therefore the ability to work on somefring fresh afterwards.
