Seriously though, this is exactly the kind of shit multiplayer shooters have been needing more of for years. As pretty as games have gotten, gameplay has hardly evolved (compare BF2 to BF3). This kind of unpredictability will further enhance what has always made Battlefield so awesome IMO, although I imagine the loser competitive gamers will hate it because they can't precisely predict everything that'll happen.

And those weather changes... holy shit. That is such an obvious yet somehow unusual improvement considering Battlefield matches can be longer than some PlanetSide skirmishes. I just hope it shifts in quite a subtle and random manner, rather than being purely relative to match time (ie: rain always starts 50% of the way through).

My impression/"fear" from the trailer, but maybe it is really randomic.

Damn that video looked cool. So "Levoloution" had to be in the works for a while. You don't tack on those kind of dynamic changes right after E3 when you watch the COD Ghosts reveal. And at the same time, COD Ghost dynamic MP map changes had to have been designed in early in the cycle as well. (or did I miss that BF announced this a while ago? I thought this was a new announcement/reveal...)

In other words, both BF and COD this year are embracing some kind of dynamic map change which sounds great to me. Will one be better than the other? Answer likely depends on which brand/game you prefer...and that's cool and I'll as honestly I like both BF and COD but for slightly different reasons.

The only real question is how did both games this year end up with dynamic levels as a prominent new gameplay element? At least BF4 doesn't have a dog just for the sake of "COD is going to have a dog so we need one..." And I don't mean BF is copying COD or COD is copying BF (wait, right?) I just mean it's interesting from an "FPS feature arms race" perspective. FB engine is internal to EA...IW's engine, whatever it's heritage, is basically internal to Activision.

Oh shit...I haven't had coffee yet. That explains this post...

BF has had destruction since BC1. It's nothing new to the franchise and it was arguably scaled back in BF3 compared to the BC games.

And COD's dynamic shit looks like little traps with physics objects. Ooh fuckin rah

Game looks great. Sure, it's an evolution of BF3 but it's definitely not a rehash. I have seen, and heard mentions of, lots of nifty, small tweaks that sometime are forgotten when larger features wave their cock about. Making BF4 from zero would've been a huge mistake indeed.

I've put more than 300 public hours into BF3 and around 100 hours of clan games. I'm expecting BF4 will offer me something similar, which puts the cost of the base game + premium in perspective.

Looks awesome, but I hate the word 'levolution' with a passion haha. It's so lame.. I love the amount of dynamic elements that there seems to be in BF4 though, should make it really interesting to play.

They said "levolution" back then, when showing the whole skyscraper coming down No offense to COD devs but the new "dynamic" damage seems triggered the way people used to do that kind of things in HL1, just with some more particles to sell it. Maybe it's just the video, but it didn't seem physics based to me.

I think 'levolution' is just the natural culmination of what DICE has been doing since Bad Company. With BC1 and BC2 they tried to do all-out destruction on simple terrain but it often ended up being a bit too much, flow of levels being destroyed because everything turns into a parking lot. With BF3 they scaled it right back but IMO went a bit too far, with not that much actually being destructible — certainly very little that had a big impact on gameplay.

With BF4 it looks like they've finally managed to find something in-between. You can dramatically alter the flow of levels and make things feel really unpredictable, but not destroy it. It's all curated to a certain extent by people like Pampers I imagine, who are responsible for making sure things feel as wild as possible yet under control.

BF3 had a particular problem with the destruction feeling very inconsistent, i.e. you'd shoot up one wall and it'd come apart like plastic, shoot another (thinner) wall and it's like Mount Olympus. Also some levels were basically indestructible, mostly the smaller infantry-orientated ones like Metro and Grand Bazaar. I didn't like those ones very much, though I guess CoD fans must love them.

To be fair they're funny when taken out of context but CoD does some pretty cool stuff as well that BF4 doesn't have

Yeah my bad people. As I said...lack of coffee...

Anyway, the tl;dr version of what I meant: Interesting they are both making a big marketing deal of dynamic yada yadas even though it's not exactly new tech. On the other hand, the way EA/DICE is marketing it in BF4 has reinvigorated my interest in - wait for it - BF4. And yeah, I'd play Ghosts, too. WTF it's got an AI sidekick dog. I'll try it.

Yeah, the Gamcescom BF4 trailer is a kick in the balls after the "map changing events" IW illustrated at the mp event.
