Jesus fuck man, I know how it works nowadays but it really does seem so shameless when the DLC is advertised so far in advance.
-
Alright that's it.
I'm done.
-
How is this any different from the Back to Karkand deal for BF3? Which was generally praised I believe.
You're getting a free expansion... As biased as I am I still think that's one of the more generous pre-order incentives out there.
I'm surprised to see fellow developers reason like this. DICE has a separate team working on expansions, a substantial amount of people working their ass off to release content in the off-year to prolong the game while the original team is doing the next game. There's no crippled box-product deprived of content that's pushed to DLC. It's a team hired separately... almost a different studio within a studio. And that should come as no surprise, have you seen the amount of content Premium shipped for BF3?
You'd rather see a BF game every year? Linear development cycles are over for AAA-games, there's multiple teams at an office.
-
BF3's Back to Karkand pissed me off too. We all know DLC will happen but to advertise it so far ahead of the game's release when we know almost nothing about the game itself seems really cheap. I kind of assumed BF4's 'thing' to differentiate it from BF3 would be the return of China.
What they're essentially doing is taking part of the main game out and turning it into DLC, coercing people to pre-order it rather than find out if the game is actually any good. If they don't, they're punished by having to pay for part of the game that should have been there from the beginning.
I know a lot of people pre-order, but I virtually never do it. I wait until I've seen reviews from not just paid reviewers but also regular dudes.
-
Indeed, they haven't even shown or talked about the MP yet, which I strongly assume is what these maps are for. At least I think I remember them announcing Back to Karkand after they'd started showing the BF3 MP.
Anyway, I am happy that it's back to a Chinese setting ala BF2, so tired of the generic middle eastern locations~
-
They're not punishing you for not pre-ordering. They're rewarding you for your support. Yeah you can tell me how that is the same all you want but it's not. It comes down to what you perceive I suppose, do you feel you're entitled to more content? Did you think BF3 did not ship with enough content?
In the end it comes down to how much revenue the studio wants to make I suppose. Do you put 500 people on a box-product? Will that supply the game with a fair amount of content? Is 250 enough and do you hire 50 more people for the extra's?
Personally I feel we didn't take anything out of the main game. If the Operations team (expansions team) had not existed all the expansions would not have made it into the game. Back to Karkand would in no way have been shipped with the main game cos the resources to make it would not have been there. Should DICE budget the Operations team as part of the main game then and take less revenue? I think not since the box-product shipped with a fair amount of content and the expansions amounted to pretty much a full extra game. But that's up for debate...
On a different note... Yes I agree, the timing is a bit distasteful. But the business model can't be all that surprising now, can it?
-
I think you touched on the main problem I have there. I personally thought the content in Battlefield 3 upon release was meagre at best. I was a huge fan of BF2 and BF2142 and enjoyed most of the maps, but in BF3 it felt like many of them were designed for more CoD-based fans and there were only a few in the core game I felt were truly Battlefield maps.
I'm kind of expecting the same to happen again: a paltry selection of maps, at least half of which are designed for this new generation of FPS gamers (ie: small and not very open). Not that I'm saying both sides shouldn't be catered for, but when the amount of content for each becomes so small it makes it very hard to stomach being stung for a few extra maps unless I preorder.
With the Karkand maps included I'd say that BF3 just about felt like decent value for money, but the core game certainly didn't. I never got any of the DLC because by that point I'd decided that I'd spent enough on that game.
-
jeez, lighten the tits up guys!

the timing is AWFUL but there is nothing wrong with the model. pre-orders brings in revenue and that revenue offsets the cost of the additional content. imho.

Dice employ like 600 people and rick for regular prostate massages. Include the DLC in the game so the game will be bigger, better and fuller.

It has been confirmed that Battlefield 4 will NOT have co-op mode.
DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson from Sweden says the decision was made so that the developer can focus more on new single player and multiplayer modes.
maybe it was here before, but still this sux guys ;/ i reallly liked coops in BF3
-
I'd rather have coop than single player...
I know the single player is there to attract some of the people who buy CoD just for the single player, and some people do enjoy single player only games. But for me Battlefield has always been about playing with friends. I did enjoy the coop in BF3, I didn't enjoy the single player at all apart from the pretty graphics...
-
That's too bad about co-op, I had a lot of fun with that. That helicopter mission was a blast. I spent one night playing through most of the maps with some random dude from Russia, just silently completing missions. That was an awesome experience. Just wish there was more of it, I'd still buy a co-op expansion pack for BF3. There's so much room for more co-op missions that used the single player content - a tank battle one would have been pretty sweet.
