It's like watching a movie a second time, only it's actually the first time for you.

I take mental notes of what's cool, but definitely don't sit there thinking about how it's done any more, it's just subconscious. It's got to be worse for artists as they usually just stare at assets and scenes for ages taking it all in and examining it lol.
Sure, when your finished with a game you can see how its put together and structured, but I wouldn't say it's a problem or even a negative of the job.
If you don't enjoying games as much since you started to make them professionally, your playing the wrong games or taking it way to seriously for your own good.
i often look at depth of field solutions and other screenspace effects and go "oh gosh, they fucked up big time on this shader"... and I get very suspicious about all lights used in a game "THERE MUST BE SOMETHING HIDDEN BEHIND THIS DOOR, IT HAS A LIGHT ON TOP!"...
i mostly have moments where i'm thinking, "oh i see what you were trying to get me to do here", especially in terms of leading the player visually or audibly.
Thanks for all the examples. Much clearer now ![]()
Oh I know how hard and crazy it is, I used to work for Puma Canada, I know how crazy it can get.
Also I hear that some gaming studios treat their workers like slaves haha..I have friends of friends that say EA treats their workers like crap here in the Montreal studio, so I'm kinda expecting it haha.
But as long as I love what I do I don't care ![]()
