I understand the appeal of turning the WORLD of Elder Scrolls into an MMO, but the GAME, the EXPERIENCE of Elder Scrolls is deep down a lone journey to be taken by oneself. Beyond the "it's too late, me-too doesn't cut it" business concerns, I just have a hard time believing they can pull off that same experience in an MMO.

This and the STALKER news within, what a week of each other? Two games that don't suit social play being turned into MMOs.
-
i don't know, i like the prospect of a stalker mmo. the thing is, the world has to be huge in comparison, so that in every place you'll only find a minimal amount of people. i'd love to see a coop stalker kind of game as well, it could be really interesting...
-
tbh....

but could be cool, i dunno... after working on an MMO, i'm so tired of all of them being the same.... the meetings where someone jumps up and says "WoW does this!"... ugh.
Go back to non-linear, true freedom, exploration driven and a REAL world like Ultima Online.
maybe i'm just being elitist, i dunno

-
Yeah lets talk about stalker..
Anyways, I gotta agree. This does not look like any of the elder scrolls games to me. They are too... fantazy? It doesn't look medieval and brutal enough. Also, that announcement trailer was shit compared to the skyrim one.
edit;
I've jumped up on multiple occasions and said "WoW does this". But to be honest, wow does a lot of things in a good way.

The Elder Scrolls Online will have a monthly fee. Wait wut? I don't play MMO's these days but from the little I've read I thought monthly subscriptions were pretty much dead, except for WoW? I mean, SWTOR went F2P so it seems kind of odd that they think they're gonna make it?

I don't know, I'd personally prefer a 'flat rate' rather than being nickle and dimed for small transactions. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I hate the micro-transaction model. I'd rather just not bother constantly making small purchases, and if that means giving up on the game I usually do. Also, I personally see a game I don't pay for as less likely to be good and more focused on bleeding my wallet dry.
I guess one interesting factor to remember is that this game is going to be very orientated towards consoles like Skyrim, so it might be that the business dudes have figured that people will be more likely to do a one-time purchase with the free trial and then keep subscribing, than they would be to get into a F2P version (however that might work on consoles).
It might be really silly but because I've come across so many shitty F2P games that are almost malicious in their attempts to get me addicted and extract money out of me, I'm now pretty much averse to F2P games altogether. I literally avoid any F2P game now because I've had so many shit experiences and I bet a lot of people are in the same boat. Thanks to a load of asshole publishers/developers it's been ruined for everyone else...
-
Amen brother! Although, I was interested in this (even though we thought it would be F2P). But that's because I don't like MMO's and I really don't want to pay for something I'll probably don't like. I loved Skyrim though and I wanted to give this a try. But that ship has sailed now.

Hopefully they'll be smart and do free weekends or something like Valve. I'm surprised more publishers haven't caught onto that incredible way of getting people on board multiplayer games.

I think GW2 is doing pretty well with it's model of Buy to Play. You just buy the game in the first instance and from that point on you can play the game for free forever. GW2 does have a store where you can spend real money, but all of the items in there are purely cosmetic.
Apparently, they were the fastest selling MMO ever and they do new content updates very regularly. Some of them quite big!

I do prefer to just buy my games and not be tied to a subscription. At least then I can play at my own pace and don't feel kind of forced to play because I've paid for a months subscription and don't want to let it go to waste. I quit GW2 late last year and got back into it last weekend.
-
Agree with Thrik. When i hear f2p my interest in a game just vanishes. I rather pay a monthly fee then to play something that gives me constant feeling of being drained of cash or worse to have to pay for win.
Personaly i'm a big fan of Eve's payment model. You can pay a monthly subsciption with either real money or ingame money. It works like this: People with too much real cash but who suck at aquiring cash ingame pay for 30 day licenses, which turn into ingame items and then can be sold to other players who have too much ingame cash but not enough real life cash.
This works great imo. Prices are pretty ok. I pay for 3 accounts with ingame cash without breaking a sweat, don't have to grind for it, just do some very casual trading. If i had to grind money for my 3 accounts i could do it in 2-3 evenings.
This indirect connection between real money and ingame money is btw the reason why sometimes you read news that some players lost a 9000$ ship or something in Eve.

Free 2 play turns me off of a game almost immediately. Subscription models make me feel happy in knowing that if I want something I can get it without doing some micro transaction rubbish. Or seeing some new player turn up and buy all his gear that you spent grind time acquiring instead of paying for it. Guild Wars was the best game I played that never used a subscription service though. Not tried #2 though.
-
If it fails it'll go free to play and introduce pay to win mechanics. It's the standard formula.

The Elder Scrolls Online won't require PS Plus, will require Xbox Live Gold
QuoteThe Elder Scrolls Online will not require a PlayStation Plus membership to play on PS4, ZeniMax Online Studios Game Director Matt Firor wrote in a PlayStation Blog update. Bethesda confirmed to Joystiq that the subscription-based MMORPG will require an Xbox Live Gold membership to play on Xbox One, however.
-
I played this during beta and it was pretty generic and dull.

-
Yeah I was talking to my barber (lol) about it and he said it really wasn't very good at all. A bit like Skyrim except less graphically appealing, filled with annoying people, diluted gameplay, and generally not very engaging at all.
Should have probably seen it coming, considering it's not even by Bethesda GS.

Haha what the fuck, where do you get your hair cut?!
Yeah I think the issue is that Skyrim and the other Elder Scrolls are primarily singleplayer games, and they are fairly lonely experiences. Half of the fun is going off and exploring by yourself, you feel a bit more like an explorer charting new lands and exploring mysterious places.. But in an MMO you're just another person doing the exact same thing as everybody else on the server, which kinda takes away from the appeal of Elder Scrolls for me.
The game itself felt more like Lord of the Rings Online than WoW, to me anyway. But at least LotR had the nostalgia aspect, and you could run around familiar locations. In ESO, you can't even go to any places from the other games. Bit of a weird choice.
If I had it my way, I'd remove the first, compulsory dungeon. You start out in a dungeon and have to escape, but my sound was broken so I didn't have a clue what the fuck was going on. Apparently there was a John Cleese cameo, but without sound I didn't even hear it.. What a waste of money! But anyway, I'd have started the player out in the wilderness somewhere, and made the introduction less 'epic', and more about immersing the player in the world and creating a sense of isolation (fuck, after working on Alien: Isolation I'm so conscious about using that word hah). Imagine having to go out, trekking across the wilderness, making campfires etc, exploring strange places. That sounds so much more exciting than 'go out and kill 5 bears for me!', and those sorta quests.
-
Yeah Elder Scrolls for me has always been about going off an exploring a world by myself and at my own pace.
I can imagine that being ruined when you have 30 other players around you jumping constantly and spamming shit in chat.
