This is really great news. I'm really hoping Firaxis goes the Civilzation route with any planned updates/expansions to XCOM (i.e. expanding on the existing gameplay versus adding more narrated content).

okay, just started this now (far cry 3 got in the way).

Started a normal campaign in ironman mode... seems great so far! I love managing my little army and base. It's insane how quickly you become attached to your troops! I let all my recruits have green armour and helmets on (I can't afford to get too emotional!!!) and then if they live to rank up to corporal they get to remove their helmets and wear black armour.

You can make them as green as you want but you'll still feel bad when one of them dies due to a dumb move you made them undertake.

After 30 hours of playtime and a few dead squad members I finally finished this!

Great game!!! Surprisingly well-balanced mix of strategy, tactics and management. You really felt like you were running XCOM.

Just want to mention they've updated the game with some options for single-player! You can adjust the following when starting a new game:

    • Damage Roulette: Weapons have a wider range of damage.
    • New Economy: Randomized council member funding.
    • Not Created Equally: Rookies will have random starting stats.
    • Hidden Potential: As a soldier is promoted, stats increase randomly.
    • Red Fog: Combat wounds will degrade the soldier's mission stats.
    • Absolutely Critical: A flanking shot guarantees a critical hit.
    • The Greater Good: Psionics can only be learned from interrogating a psionic alien.
    • Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete.
    • Results Driven: A country offers less funding as its panic level increases.
    • High Stakes: Random rewards for stopping alien abductions.
    • Diminishing Returns: Increased cost of satellite construction.
    • More Than Human: The psionic gift is extremely rare.

THIS is how you add replay value in a relatively simple way! Going to start a new game soon.

Just booted this up again! I tried multiplayer which, wow, was very underdeveloped. MP is 1on1 Deathmatch without any sort of objective (and thus, no incentive to push forward). Also, I would've preferred if you were forced to choose between playing as X-COM or Aliens and not being able to mix and match between all units in the game. I really hope the MP is more fleshed out in XCOM2.

I decided to start a new SP game on classic difficulty with ironman mode enabled and with a few custom options:

    • New Economy: Randomized council member funding.
    • Not Created Equally: Rookies will have random starting stats.
    • Hidden Potential: As a soldier is promoted, stats increase randomly.
    • Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete.

Let's see if I get buttraped.

Just confirmed: Xcom: Enemy Within is an expansion to Enemy Unknown. It will appear 15-11-13 for the PC. It takes place during Enemy Unknown. The ending of the game will not be altered. It will appear with the Commander Edition of enemy Unknown. There will be a separate release as well. It's unclear if it will be released for the consoles.

The expansion will revolve around a substance called Meld. With it, you can build new weapons and achieve genetic bonuses for your soldiers. It's also possible to modify a soldier's brain to make them less susceptible for mind control. You'll also be able to build cybernetic soldiers. These will fall under the Mech Trooper class. There will be new enemies like the Mechtoid. New maps are being added and old ones will be changed to feature Meld. These will appear temporarily to encourage taking more risks during play.

No English source yet. This is from an interview with a Dutch game news site.

Is it correct that the only way to play it is to start a new game? Because that's what's putting me off. I've poured 60 hours into the campaign and it was great but I got too many games lying around to justify a second playthrough.

its a new campaign, so not really a second playthrough

I can see a scenario where a player is so fatigued by the original XCOM that he can't enjoy Enemy Within. But there's so much new stuff, changed stuff, tweaked stuff that everything feels hella-fresh.

Also Vilham, the campaign isn't new-new. It's still the same campaign (in broad strokes), but they've changed some story moments and stuff like that.
