FUCK YIR! PLEASE DONT SUCK!
Gears of X-Com ![]()
Read the article Stolve, this is an RTS made by Fireaxis.
Can only hope its good.
Wait WHAT? I thought it was the 2K FPS game..
As a side note, the first X-Com (or UFO), was also named Enemy Unknown. And it's supposed to be spelled X-COM, not XCOM.
As a side note to the side note, Jagged Alliance is also making a comeback, as a "turn based" (RT-TB) game. I guess 2012 is back to the 90s.

That's because this is a remake/re-imagining of the original X-Com by Firaxis, who, btw, I can't really imagine making this an RTS, or at least very MUCH of an RTS. They're the Civ company, they're a turn based studio through and through.
taking money bets now that the shooter xcom will outsell the rts xcom !
( i never played xcom and take no quality sides ! )

The shooter XCOM will be multi-platfrom while the strat XCOM (where do you see that it'll be RTS?) will likely be PC-exclusive, so it probably. I couldn't possibly give less of a shit though. The far more interesting bet would be metacritic scores, I would think. :3
Re-read the GI info, and it looks like X-Com Enemy Unknown will keep the original game's structure of real-time globe view and turn based combat, have destruction in the levels, and come out on all three main platforms. This shit's gonna own. As far as the bet's concerned, I'd say which ever game sells more is just down to which ever game 2K puts more ad dollars behind. Given the extremely negative fan responses to 2K Marin's game and the extremely positive responses to this Firaxis announcement, I wouldn't make any presumptions about the shooter.
Sadly, the shooter will probably still do better because the original X-COM is too complex for your average herp-derp gamer. ![]()

The original X-com was too complex period in some aspects. You don't need one button for going down ladders, and a second button for descending with your jetpack. Those buttons can be totally combined to one context sensitive "go down" button! Maybe even combine it with crouch, GASP!
Anyway, my main hope is that they don't dull the meat grinder aspect of it. If I'm not losing four or five rookies per mission, it's not X-Com. It actually turns me off, playing Jagged Alliance, how your units are all named and voiced and designed to be very near immortal if properly managed. Losing soldiers in X-Com is like losing HP in an RPG, or zerglings in Starcraft, it just happens as a matter of course.

what the fuck did i just read
Real time - Turn based.Pause - Giver orders - Execute - Pause - Give more orders - Execute etc.
There's been a bunch of new screenshots made available by Game Informer, either posted directly or in videos. From looking at the video shots, it appears that the game's using distance based movement rather than grids or hexes, explosives, health packs, and grenades are all dedicated UI buttons rather than having to be swapping into your soldier's hands, while swapping between main weapon and off-hand is separate, both using a "Shoot" button up by the grenades and stuff on the side of the screen. There's context sensitive cover markers on the battlescape that you can order soldiers to use. In addition to the original rifle, pistol, and rocket launcher, there's also an LMG and sniper rifle in the default terran weapons. No sign of heavy or autocannons unfortunately, however. Soldiers have prefixes to their names, possibly indicating squad or ability? Research looks pretty normal, and the Geoscape has an "Upcoming Events" panel that lists when your next financial review is, when purchases, constructions, and research is ETA, etc., and a "Scan for UFOs" button bound to Y (this is a pretty big change from the original passive detection based on radar installations, but there's no detail about how it works yet).

Was kinda nervous about the art style, but I kinda like it actually. Not sure about this thing with having the camera zoom in tho, as long as the fog of war doesn't reveal if theres another Sectoid standing right next to em then I guess its fine. Really dug this tense feeling you got in the old games when you were having a firefight with some aliens far away, and you would only have a vague idea of exactly how many were there, and how they were placed.
