did anyone see will wheatons comments on this whole situation?

he basically accuses hollywood of being unable to provide a system that competes with piracy, and that's why piracy exists.

he has a point; bootlegging has always existed, but companies have fallen behind in providing a better distribution model.

i have been willing to pay a few bucks to watch a documentry or film on amazon or netflix but most are not available in my country, we've all had this problem i'm sure. so the only option is to either order and wait for a physical copy, or spend 30 seconds looking up a download and grabbing it.

this is entirely the fault of an inability to keep up with market demands. bootlegging will ALWAYS be a problem, you can't stop it. but i think if we could get access to content easily and legitimatly the vast majority of us would.

Its not only about keeping up with pirates distribution, but refusing to lower the prices even when they do compete (with stuff like Netflix). Sure they have to pay for servers and bandwidth but that price is NOTHING compared to factories creating physical copies that you then have to ship to peoples homes. This is also true for steam. I remember when Steam was brand new and cheap as fuck. Don't get me wrong, there's A LOT of cheap games on steam, but Skyrim was actually 15€ (not $!) cheaper in my local store and that's not the only game with ridiculous online pricing. its almost like the only reason it was for sale on steam was so that they'd get the exposure there.

Netflix pricing and catalog lives and dies by the publishers, their main cost isn't in the rack space, but in the rights to stream those movies and shows. So again, Hollywood's inability to keep up. As far as the Steam thing goes, I can't wrap my head around why a game costs more in one country than another. Skyrim in the states was priced at the same as what you'd pay retail for the game ($59.99) except there was no sales tax.
