Our Forum celebrity @FMPONE got interviewed again, this was a really interesting read :) http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/03/how…ke-a-cs-go-map/

Though i'm curious what exactly you meant with the struggle when making Cache. What was it that made you almost abandon the project?

“My biggest struggle was probably during Cache. At one point, I thought I would have to abandon the project; it wasn’t going very well. But Volcano had faith in what we were doing, and we managed to push through some of the early struggles. That project and Volcano definitely taught me a lot of my most valuable lessons about competitive level design, including maintaining an upbeat atmosphere and keeping readability high."

graphics pretty much. You can see what Cache used to look like here https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/topic/14537-it…he-day/?page=15 . I liked the look but the readability and mood were really bad

I always loved the early cache map, I wish it could be around for casual. Of course your dead on about the readability. I never played it in source, but it's a favorite of mine for sure. Thanks for not abandoning! :)

Hey you people playing CSGO! Here's a short story of mine I want to share:

Some weeks (or month) ago some guy added me in Steam and I accepted, because he seemed to be legit with played hours and non-private profile (I usually just block private-profiles right away). He had chatted me about some generic stuff few times, like asking how's it going and if I'm up for a game some time and all that basic stuff. Yesterday then he asked me to join as stand-in player for some small scale match he was having. I was first surprised that I'm being asked, but thought why not, I've been in mixes before too. Prize there was 5x AWP Asiimov per team, so one for each player if winning. I didn't care really about this prize stuff, was just into having a game.

As I went to join the game he was in (I was told to just join in), I got booted out for some reason. I didn't notice the message as I pressed enter-key too quickly after load screen, but checked from console the reason I was kicked, was that I was missing an anti-cheat client (Royal Anti-Cheat). Was getting bit suspicious at this point, but then again, CEVO and ESEA both have their own clients with their anti-cheat. I asked the guy about this and he sent me link where to download that client and was telling me they're waiting already, so if I could make it bit faster. He also sent me link to a site showing how it was a legit match going on actually (was some russian site, but I just went on by quick glance and thought it was just that he was russian and linked the site he sees because of translation). The standing there was 0:1 and one player missing, while Steam's "Show Game Info" was saying it was 0:3, but not the first time things aren't perfectly synced. I went to the anti-cheat's site and it started already downloading the client right away (I have it so that I need to confirm download before making it happen), which was weird, but seen happen with legit stuff too sometimes. As I went to install it (yes, really), Microsoft's SmartScreen told it was untrusted software and that's when I finally realized that this is not legit stuff.

I told the guy about it and at the same time I went to search about the software from Google. Found a thread about it, but nowhere was it mentioned that it was for CSGO and last post by developer was in 2012. I told about it and the guy just said something, "i dunno man, people play and have it installed, was released like a year ago, just come". I responded that it's too suspicious stuff and I'm gonna pass this match, not happening. After a while, the guy removed/blocked me in Steam. I posted about the software in Reddit and few guys mentioned that it's remote-trojan and is going to gain access to your e-mail and Steam account to steal your inventory. After this, I also found a thread about similar case where someone was tricked into a match with same prizes and all, fell for it and so did his friends, all losing their inventory. The install supposedly ends in some fake error (installation error: 0x800F0906) to make it look like you didn't install it after all (SmartScreen saved me here!). I reported the user and the group in Steam about this, hopefully Valve does something about it. I did what I can, which is informing you guys.

TL:DR - Was asked to join a match as stand-in, but required to download anti-cheat client (Royal Anti-Cheat), which seemed bit suspicious, though there are ESEA and CEVO with their client programs. After Microsoft's SmartScreen warning and googling, found it indeed was a hijack attempt.

What did I learn? Fucking piece of shits trying to get my knives and inventory any means necessary and I really have to be alert all the time, trusting no one except myself.

@Vaya I was thinking more of a 4 part documentary on Discovery. Could show right after the millionth showing of raising the concordia.

I would never DL an anti-cheat client from anyone other than the big leagues around, but I would much rather they operate like faceit where it's dealt with server side. It's archaic having to keep your own 3rd-party anti-cheat up to date, and look at all the shit ESEA have been up to with them, and they're meant to be legit.

I rarely even click on links from well known friends on steam incase their account has been compromised (I usually google for it myself to find what it was they were talking about). I've also got steam guard enabled via the steam app, and 2 stage verification on the email address I use, as well as totally different passwords for both steam and email.

I think anyone here that have played with me have witnessed that I am absolute garbage at this game :v But! I caved in and payed to participate in the newest operation, which forced me to play on other maps besides d2 and inferno. It really helped me improve and I went from 'Gold Nova II' to 'DMG'. Still can't spray for shit, but overall I'm enjoying this game a lot more now :)

Maybe in earlier CS, but in CSGO, you better learn to spray 'cuz one-tapping will get you fucked sideways with 64tick and overall hitreg probz. ;)

I think spraying is more prominent now due to the movement changes that occurred making one tapping an inferior style to the "spraying" style. The movement changes meant that you couldn't "ADAD" as quickly thus meaning you'd become an easy target it you were one tapping due to waiting for the recoil to reset. Just look at how Scream had to adapt his play-style due to the changes, watch a fragmovie from around 2013 when he was playing for VeryGames and you can see his movement is amazing, causing the opponent to constantly re-aim thus making him very hard to hit. (link to the fragmovie)

Shroud showed in this clip that spraying can be very effective at dealing with many opponents coming from many angles.

@Pampers don't say that, there are people here who litteraly started playing competitive and are still in silver class, and we feel really like we suck so hard if you suck!

tapping is still legitimate, and spraying is only effective if you have control of the recoil. However it's when you choose to tap and spray that makes the real difference, but most people still think an enemy 100m away behind a chest height box is an acceptable situation to spray in.

Due to the built in variance of bullet placement (spread), you could have aimbot level spray control and still only hit a couple of shots at great range.

I'm really not impressed by that shroud video. Looked like total lack of control, and the five-seven at the end? Would look at home in a silver game the way the T's fumbled that site entry. They were 5v1 and with bomb, as soon as they realised where shroud was, they should've taken B. the awper with like 1hp runs into a crossfire, the guy blocking his teammate in the doorway DUCKING no less.

Call me cynical, but I think very few frag videos show skill more than a total fumble from the opposing team (ie: 1v1v1v1v1v1 situation).

Just old timer whining here… spraying started to be necessary already late in the CSS cycle, I remember after I abandoned because of hit boxes/netcode never fixed, friend who was playing competitive told me so.

It is so shit really, I find it very inelegant. Probably that's why I couldn't adapt to GO, although I wasn't able to play as much as I wanted. Now that I have a computer the Internet is shit…

Well, seems like people finally figured out that hitboxes are bad because they just don't sync right with animations on the server. Hopefully Valve will get that fixed soon.

i didn't ever play any meaningful amount of 1.6, but i get the impression that the hitboxes back then were "perfect", and games like tribes (fml i love that game, so sad it died...) which are MUCH faster paced were able to register hits fantastically well. Maybe they were simpler times, but I reckon valve haven't been too bothered by it as the real money is in LAN events where this isn't such an issue.

And seriously, can we fucking remove the swedish servers from mm? Just like UK servers were a pile of wank for the greater EU population, Swedish servers are terrible to play on for the same reason. It just exacerbates an already patchy hitreg problem.

b..but I have 5 ping on the swedish servers :P

Anyway, no fast paced online game have ever had perfect netcode no matter how much you look at it with rose tinted nostalgia glasses :) And even if it did, there are too many uncontrollable variables that come into play, like distance to server, connection quality and speed is unique for everyone connected to the server. You never know when your sister is going to boot up Kaaza to get that latest Backstreet Boys single. Also, everything happening on your client isn't sent back to the server, so what you see isn't always perceived the same way by the server. Making people go MUH HITBUXIS!1 NETCODZ

From the UK I get a ping of about 60+ to swedish servers, and all the Swedes get sub 10 pings. I didn't even get sub 10 ping on UK servers. I'm not even complaining specifically about hitboxes, but when someone is getting 5 shots off on me when I've literally just watched them peak, I have every right to complain.

I wish mm used a veto system like faceit (or a system that picks a server so all 10 people have a ping within a 20ms range or something), rather than just auto-assigning us a server based on whatever valve do atm. on faceit I immediately veto the worst pings for the party, and assuming the enemy team do the same, we are left with a server where we should all have an acceptable, almost balanced ping to.

And while I'm sitting here bitching, I think the ranks need a reshuffle. I don't want to pretend to know how players are distributed, but I've seen a lot of my friends fly up the ranks recently, and play at a level which they aren't ready for. The variance in matches is mind boggling, 1 game I'm shitting all over LEMs, the next game we get steam rolled by LEMs. The ranking system should be in place to try and avoid this and have matches with more predictable outcomes, it's a complete lottery atm. But I'm sure valve will realise this from their own stat tracking, it's just what will they do about it...

in regards to ranks I couldn't agree more. The learning curve for moving up seems to have been totally destroyed..

Reminds me of ESEA sometimes where you have 1 player outright carrying a team of worse players.

Yus, more geographically spread server is really needed. Especially for eastern europe. So sick and tired of getting some dude who knows 3 sentences: Fack your mather!, Ah my ghad! and Gif me awp!

With regards to the ranks, I haven't experienced the same. I have more tied matches than wins or losses lately, and those that aren't are usually lost/won by one or two round. Then again I'm lower rank, so probably a much larger pool of people to matchmake with :)

edit: you can set max ping in the settings for the matchmaking procedure ^^
