the problem i see with UDK as a low-level beginner engine is that it doesn't ship with a game. for getting started it might be easier to work on a game with existing ai/mp servers and set gamerules you can discover and expand. learning how to use the editor and the pipeline and scripting an entire gameplay at the same time is a bit much of a learning curve.
Easiest map editor for a newbie

It's sad, and strange, that considering how widely UE3 is being used, there's still no good games (that aren't +3 years old) you could map for. I was hoping Bulletstorm would be moddable, but I guess not...

Bioshock should have had an editor. I wish Bioshock had an editor.

Ok so I have been doing these tutorials, thanks to csyver by the way. I don't know if anyone is familiar with these UDK tutorials or if you just learned yourselves but I am stuck. I have my basic ground level, turned on geometry mode and made sure I clicked the right layer that I wanted to extrude. It extruded but when I tried to bring the corners into each other to make it so the edges were more rounded off, it only gave me the option of moving that part up or down vertically instead of me just being able to make a 45 degree angle to change the shape of it. Basically, instead of having the 90 degree angle to move my corners it gave me a 45 degree angle when I clicked on the corner. I don't know if there was something already clicked on for that to happen or what. This post probably doesn't make any sense and I think I ended up confusing myself but if anyone has any tips of how to just get the main level to be reshaped instead of making basically a hill to walk up or down on that would help a lot thanks.

i'm not sure I understand the problem. (right?)clicking on the vertices (the points that the shape/brush is the sum of) will make them snap to grid (you should always build on-grid). you can set the grid resolution in the lower right corner (checkbox that says 16 next to it by default, mouseover for tooltip). the grid resolution will determine to what extent you can alter the brush if you have snap to grid enabled.
i think one of the first challenges are probably learning brush operations, to understand what you can do and can't do (and why). did this work in the tutorial? or are you just experimenting? which tutorial was this?

I know what you mean. I think you're set to local orientation and not world? I can check tomorrow, I don't have it on my home machine.

There's an icon/drop down box on the top toolbar that's labeled "Local" and "World." This controls the orientation of the widget when you have an actor/edge/vertex selected. Set it to world to fix your widget woes.

Spark editor for NS2. It's practically google sketchup.

I would not say source sdk is the place I would start, I'm trying to teach someone how to use it atm and it's tough. In the long run though, I think it will make them a better designer
I think you guys know what I'm talking about ;D halla at my sdk peeps.

i first used FarCry2´s editor.. it isn´t a real level editor, but it makes much fun to use and you don´t have to care about any technical stuff.
After that i went into Source which needs a lot more of time before you can make a working map..

Dont know if you had these already Citus but the 3dBuzz "Make a simple level" will tell you everything you need to create your first level in UDK.
Here is the link:
