Congrats on the awesome review scores. Wasn't too interested in this after Far Cry 2, but with scores like this I might pick it up!
It's nice to see reviews before release day too! You guys must be confident about the game too.

Sweet!
-
I've prepurchased this now!
It just felt like the sandbox experience can be jolly good fun!

Only 26,87 euro for the standard edition

Bah, they took the Steam version offline

..wow, just wow.
10/10
just played 4 1/2 hours straight, and don't feel like stopping. it's been a long time since i have been this captivated. better than far cry and crysis combined.
-
I've played maybe 1,5 hours or so. it's good but not great so far!
I feel like there's a bit too much clutter in the shape of randomquests/randompeople/randomenemies/randomanimals everywhere. Feels a bit too much like an overpopulated and gamey world if you ask me...
Crysis 1 actually gave you a better sense of place imho.
-
Even if this was the shittiest game ever made, I would still play it just because Vaas is so fucking awesome!
-
Really regret getting this for the 360, looks pretty rough most of the time (I've never seen SSAO so ridiculously over the top), though it also has glimpses where it looks absolutely fantastic. The game is great tho, pretty much is Skyrim with guns, which is awesome!

I heard this game is the bomb! And yeah, Im going PC with this.

but it's a game.

What I was trying to say is that game worlds can either try to mimic real world settings and locations or they can be a bit more abstract and "gamey" (and anywhere inbetween of course). My opinion is that the world of Far Cry 3 leans a bit too much towards the latter, which breaks the illusion of being on a foreign, hostile tropical island (atleast for me). For example, animal locations are, like most things, clearly marked on the map and the animals themselves have a very limited geographical range. So when you go hunting, it's more of an MMO-style experience where you simply move to the marked area, quickly spray some animals with bullets and be on your way. You don't have to skulk around in a thick jungle, looking for your prey, watching the amount of sound you make etc.
This doesn't make the game bad, it's just a question of preference.

God this game looks so good. I was going to invest in Assassin's Creed 3 as my 'go crazy in an open world during my Christmas break' game, but I think I'll be switching to this. My PC isn't really up to scratch though so I'll have to figure out which console is the best choice.

i never played far cry 1 and 2. i bet this game is good

for sure. about the animals, i actually like that. once you get deeper into the crafting trees they start to use more rare animals, animals in places you haven't visited yet - so letting the player know that the area they are currently in doesn't have the right animals works out pretty well to encourage them to keep moving forward, and you get another reward when you pop a radio tower and can suddenly see "ah there's my next backpack!". as a mechanic i think it works out a lot better than something like deer hunter - considering the type of game it is, of course!
and they do this with everything, it's all marked out for you, and you can choose to explore, or buy a map and have things shown for you (you still have to reach them and locate the items you need, which is often harder than it seems). i like the fact that you have very clear goals, and they are communicated to you in a very clear way. it's obviously not the right choice for every game, but for this one i think they did it pretty well.
i have been running around with a bow, upgrading all my stealth skills, and it's quite like how you describe: skulking through trees, scouting out areas from a distance, etc. taking over rebel bases and suddenly having a safe area is a really nice feeling too, gives you a great sense of progression.
honestly, it's a great example of well-designed and intuitive mechanics. probably not for everyone, depending on what you expect going in. i suppose it helps that i was expecting another farce like Far Cry 2, and to get this was a pleasant surprise.

Maybe I should purchase this piece of interactive art to tickle my funnybone.

This actually sounds really cool - although they've done a terrible job promoting it. Everything I've seen up until this week makes it look like a heavily scripted Uncharted clone, with little to no open world stuff, which is apparently the opposite of what it is. All that emphasis on story stuff earlier really threw me off.
-
It's the fucking call of duty era we live in. Everything is publicized as being the next Michael bay explosions fest, even when it isn't. I hate that with all my guts.
-
Exactly like HP said, even Splinter Cell was going that route
It's all marketing sadly. -
