My first industry job + questions!

    Got another question guys.

    I'm looking for a property to rent in Cambridge. I want to either live in the city centre (preferrably!) or just outside. Don't want to be living more than 20 minutes car journey outside the city really. Does anybody know of any good ways of finding property? I've looked on Rightmove and other letting websites but can't find anywhere.

    I also don't really want to house share. Being at uni for 3 years was more than enough sharing for me!

    I have no idea about housing in the UK but I'd try to avoid a car at all costs. Get a place that connects well with public transport to town centre and your studio. Also house sharing might not be the worst idea if you're having a hard time finding something in the beginning.

    pogo, ask your employer if they have any preferred estate agents, or ask people at the company who have had to find places who they would reccomend.

    I already have a car and I've managed to keep it running despite having no income at university, so with a wage it shouldn't be an issue. Obviously, if I can, I will get rid of my car so I have more money to save, but it depends where I find a flat I guess.

    Cambridge unfortunately doesn't do single bed places for less than 700 a month. Then theres the bills and council tax on that. Basically unaffordable. As for agencys ive heard bad things about all of them, but thats pretty normal no matter where you are.

    Well I've found a few single bed places, but not many. There are smaller, single bed places outside of Cambridge though, right? Within driving distance.

    Also... 700 quid a month?!?! PLUS MOAR STUFF?!!? THAT'S INSANE.

    The uk has retarded prices for living. I hope you share a house with simon pogo or having a brilliant pay cheque or you're going to have no money left after all the bills.

    I'm starting to think that more and more now dude.. It's gonna cost me a bomb to live by myself. I want to move in with my girlfriend in about 6 months time, so maybe I could just house share for a bit.

    Vilham, is there anybody at work that has a spare room going in a house share? Might start looking into that.

    that sounds a bit steep, just did a quick search and you can get a single flat for about 100 pounds a week, thats about right considering 700 a month + taxes would make Cambridge 2x as expensive as Frankfurt (2nd most expensive city in germany ...) In the middle of London I'd expect 700+

    Nobody really lives in the heart of a city unless your mad, get a place a few miles out and research the bus connections

    less than 500, 10 miles out of cambridge (if you've got a car that's a poxy commute), and in a nice village.if you pay less than about 400 a month the place will most likely be a bit shit:

    those are mostly single rooms in an occupied house, and tbh i'd be happy to pay an extra 100 quid for my own house. a place of your own is infintely more enjoyable than a tiny bedsit or a shared house.

    do you live in a village now? are you dead set on getting into the town centre? cause it's really not all it's cracked up to be, no matter how dreamy cambridge is it's not worth jizzing half your wage over accomodations on.

    Those links don't work Rick, but I'm going to have another look on Rightmove. I think it would be nice to live in the city centre, but I might just have to bite the bullet and live further out. The more I think about living in a shared house, the more I am opposed to the idea. I've done it for 3 years now, and I'm fed up of living with wankers.

    If he wants anywhere near central Cambridge that has a kitchen and living room its easily 700. After London Cambridge is probably one of the most expensive places to live in the UK and unfortunately wages don't match that reality. And because of that living outside of Cambridge is bad for your social life as cabs are about 25-30 pounds to any surrounding town/village.

    Yeah, you can find them outside Cambridge, but personally I avoided that for the sake of my social life and house shared with randoms for the first 6 months since then ive lived with 2 mates near work which is just on the outskirts of Cambridge, 1200 for a 5 bedroom house, 3 bathrooms, 1 toilet, kitchen and sitting room.

    Yeah that's the other issue, the social side of things! Don't wanna be going home to an empty house in the middle of nowhere, knowing nobody! Hmm.
