haven't even died once. except maybe falling down a couple of places. I grew up with games like MW and halo 3 though, so this comes fairly easy to me.

starting to think games were a lot more casual back then.

I'm only an hour into this but I'm totally loving it! The visuals look a bit dated but the overall experience and attention to details is amazing. Bringing toilet paper to that dude was awesome

I agree, however what you indeed brought to the dude was household paper, not toilet paper. The picture belows explains better:

In my experience, the item more resembled the one on the left, as opposed to the one on the right. Of course, this is nitpicking, and both types of paper can be used to dry/clean your rectum. Even coffee filters will do in a pinch, which I'm sure I'm not the only one to have experienced firsthand.

I usually just use the shower if I'm out of paper.

Lots of cheap shots, unavoidable damage and shadow-stepping headcrabs. It all adds up.

I'm enjoying the nostalgia injection, though I find any traversal more complicated than walking down a corridor is a major pain.

Playing Half-Life 1 in an up-to-date engine is a dream, though Source is pretty sweet too.

    Just finished it!

I enjoyed each second of it. It's visually really impressive. Source is not the newest engine, but those guys could deliver some neat graphics: especially the shiny-green-toxic pool and the water. Hell yeah!

The eye candy effect placed in the weapons after killing enemies/ get hit by acid/ etc helped to increase the sense of immersion a lot more. It all seems responsive.

The Houndeye is really a pain in the ass in BMS (which is great, because in HL1 this alien dog was almost harmless). I like that image-effect/ distortion that's applied when we get hit.

It's not a perfect "game", because there are a few areas that could be improved, but it's definitely something that I would (and already had) recommend to everyone. Really well executed.

    Congratz to those involved!

    now, some screenies:

Black Mesa uses Firefox, iRC and Outlook (?)

I'm happy that it wasn't Internet Explorer, otherwise I would have ragequitted

This video is a bit harsh but it raises all of the points I had an issue with whilst playing. I'm not bashing, it's a great mod but everyone is hating on the video without really listening to what he says.

    Pros:

    Good re-imagining of environments

All the remade textures and props are great.

    Love the Glock17

Surface Tension is awesome. The 3d skybox is pimp as fuck.

Throwing flares at zombies at the start was rather amusing. Went on a bit too long though.

    Toilet paper was great.

    Cons:

I found the music not to my liking.

The grunts I didn't like at all. Their look or their sounds. My favourite enemy of HL1, I didn't enjoy fighting them at all in BMS.

    Where's the robot voice announcer?

Some weapons feel rather unresponsive and take a decade to reload. The crowbar swing is weird.

Electrical buzzing ambient sound, how many times does this need to get used? Swear I heard it at least 10 times in one level

Lack of player clipping going on in some areas, I got stuck and snagged on things A LOT.

Well, whereas I do agree with the majority of the points in the video, I think It's a little bit harsh.

First, this is a free product, not a AAA game, not a indy game, but a TC mod!

BMS is a game that you really want to love, and you do love it for what it is, you can feel and sense the love that has been poured into every single corner of the levels, and I can really appreciate that.

With that being said, criticism is very important, so I hope the peeps the worked on it doesnt take it the wrong way, criticism is crucial so listen to it so you can do it better next time, although take it with a grain of salt because the internet is the internet.

Absolutely, it is still a free mod and I applaud the effort made. But this is Half-Life, and so I'm going to compare everything in fine detail and nitpick like a bitch

I think in this particular case the criticism is more important than ever, because although BM:S currently seems to be a splendid reimagining of Half-Life 1 it's not yet complete — there's still Xen to come, along with the opportunity to tidy up bits of the existing experience. So hopefully the guys are keeping in mind most people are loving the game, but not completely writing off the criticisms that're also being aired.

I think most people can live without the cut areas, but at the very least it's worth looking into the many smaller criticisms because it's the little touches that make the difference between nailing the Valve feel and not, to steal someone else's quote.
