i played through HL1 most recently about 2 years ago, it's still amazing. And the us being for the most part faggy artists i agree it looks dated, which it is, but it's also like saying you don't want to listen to music from the 70's because it doesn't have synthesisers and the bass never "drops".
stop being cunts. play HL1.

It's just a weird concept to me that graphic quality would keep people from playing older games. I can understand obtuse controls: I've never really gotten into Ultima Underworld, but that's because the controls are just primordial. Same goes for System Shock 1. But I played System Shock 2 for the first time recently, without a nostalgia filter (and without using any high res textures/graphics updates), and it still scared the shit out of me, and is one of the most immersive games I've played. If the game is good enough, your brain kind of takes over and fills in the gaps in the graphics. For me, at least.
I mean, can those of you that can't play/replay Half-Life, can you also not play Wolfenstein 3D and Doom because of the graphics? Or No One Lives Forever or Deus Ex, FPS games that fell in that same era? I'm not judging, just curious.
-
That's right. I find it really difficult to play Metal Gear Solid 1 too, despite it being one of my all-time favourite games; if it weren't for the fact a GameCube remake was produced which brought everything up to MGS2's level of graphics I'd most likely have never played it again. It kind of gets to the point where I'd rather leave my memories and mind's eye view of a game in history, because when I go back and see how much the games have aged it takes away from my fond memories somehow.
It's a bit like when I tried emulating Dizzy, a game I played to absolute death as a child and one I had endless lovely memories of playing with my dad, etc. Then when I tried it again it looked unbelievably basic and not very fun at all, and it really started to rape my memories.
So I stopped and try to leave pre-2000 games alone unless they were 2D. -
Hmm I find it really odd. I can play games with 'worse' graphics as long as I played them when I was a kid. Games that I never played as a kid, however, I struggle to play these days. For example, I've tried numerous times to play X-com, but it really doesn't run well, and looks pretty hideous!
-
yeah, when I was a kid we would play this really awesome Dr. Who game on our C64. I tried it a few years ago through an emulator and man it was not awesome. But recently I was playing Doom and was really getting into it, so I think if the game is good enough sometimes it can hold up to the test of time.
-
At least it doesn't give you a headache after 5 min like any noisy, contrasty, over post-effected unreal shooter nowadays

Actually... perhaps it's time to dust off this diamond again and give it a match.

fuck you if you haven't played HL1, what the fuck is wrong with you.
If this is pointed towards me, then you misunderstood my post. I've played and finished Half Life atleast a dozen times and the last time I played it was only a couple of months ago. Still having a blast.
The point I was trying to make was this: I can still play the original Doom with as much fun as back in 1993. But If you say System Shock is a classic, you should play it, I can't. It's simply too dated for me to get immersed in without the nostalgia factor to get me through. But, if I played in back then, I could still play it now. Does that make sense?

Fucking Awesome! I've been waiting forever for this. It looks really professional. Respect!
My faith is restored that it will see a release someday

Finally a good excuse to play though Half Life again!
-
The design is great, it looks awesome and the changes to the maps are pretty decent.
But... that voice acting is terrible... I cringed everytime they spoke, please tell me those are placeholders...
Bring back the gas mask grunts! WE'VE HOT HOSTILES!!!
-
Voice acting sucks... It reminds me X-COM1 CD version -they fucked up music and some sounds. Sound is a lot of mood in games, changing good old voices to crappy new ones should be illegal.
-
Yeah, not keen on those new voices. When I heard them they immediately stood out as the kind of thing that would sound great in a kid's action cartoon, but not a relatively serious universe like Half-Life — it's just too hammy. Not bad voice acting so much as inappropriate, the tone feels all wrong and this is why I'm guessing the team will be getting a lot of comments about them.

If the originals aren't being used because of quality issues (a lot of HL1's sounds were admittedly quite heavily compressed and shit) then the replacements should definitely be faithful. I can't actually remember if this particular exchange was in HL1 but it doesn't blend in very well either way. HL1's sound design was one of its strongest assets and it's not something that should be tinkered with too much IMO.
-
cmon people. the lines have been in the original as well (although with distortion on) and while its clearly not the strongest voice/sound design its still pretty uber for a fan mod!
-
It's definitely worth bringing up criticisms though because if there're glaring issues I'm guessing the team would like to figure them out before this thing they've worked on for a crazy amount of time is released. It's easy to not see unpopular choices in an amateur project as the processes usually aren't there, and when a limited testing group is used they're often too polite to be honest about things that'll take a lot of work to fix.
Seen it myself many times, and nothing's worse than that moment when your release is overshadowed by a multitude of relatively minor issues that the general public is all too willing to complain about (see the video's YouTube comments). If I were the dev team I'd be making damn sure the game is tested by quite a number of objective players and not friends/family, to make sure they get honest feedback where it's needed.
It really does look mostly great though, fantastic work. I have no doubt this will be a superb re-imagining of HL1 and can't wait to get my hands on it. I'd like it if things like the above were fixed because it'll make the experience that much sweeter for me.

Is it really that bad? I have no sound at work.
Will check again tonight.
-
Yeah, it's that bad.
And I did not like the look of this at all...
