    You guys know that helmets don't protect from bullets? Army helmets are for protection from shrapnel and dirt thats flying around. Do the drug lords fight with mortars and artillery grenades? The normal helmets also make hearing difficult which is bad in urban combat (hence you see more and more helmets with ears open in places like Iraq). So i'm not 100% convinced that their no helmet appearence has to do with bad equipment. Could be a tactical choice.

    And it also makes sensde that some of these guys have FAL's. Not all of them fight inside buildings. Afaik they have fights up hills and alleys with longer combat distances. It's a good weapon to actualy stop a criminal on mid-range.

    Helmets can and do stop bullets. Sure, I'm no solider but I've been told enough by family in the military from their stories and read enough that they can and do. Maybe not 10 times out of 10, but better to have something than nothing. I know that I'd sure rather have a helmet on.

    We are talking about BOPE here. I'm pretty sure they have all the equipment they need at their disposal. It may just be a tactical choice indeed.

    Combat helmets don't stop bullets. That's a legend. One of the first things i was told when i joined the army. And think about it even if a bullet comes in such a flat angle that it deflects from a helmet that basicly means it would have missed the head without the helmet on.

    I wouldn't be so sure of that Min0. They may even have enough to fully outfit 20 to 40 agents, but the operation had 150 BOPE agents, and they may have spread their resources thin for that. Most likely these images are not of the front line confrontations, where their best gear would be in use.

    The PASGT Helmet is said to have stopped rifle rounds on occasion, I'd happily take the chance that it would deflect. And what hit this chap in the head for times? I'm assuming it was quite a slow moving soft bullet but still, it saved him and that's cool.

    Indeed, the vast vast vast majority of officers involved wouldn't have been BOPE agents anyway:

    Yes, 17,500 officers (yes I know not all will have been frontline). I very much doubt their police has that many helmets.

    Steppen, most modern helmets are classed with an NIJ level, up to 3A (.44 magnum) depending on the actual model.

    In a large firefight some Norwegian soldiers got into, there were 3 helmets who had stopped\deflected AK (7.62x39) rounds even if the helmet only had a 3A rating.

    They do help, but if Brazil haven't got money to properly equip their soldiers or officers, then I wouldn't guess for anything else than 30 year old Pasgat helmets (that would mean that the ballistic materials inside have already rotten away, and you'd be better protected with a baseball cap).

    I'm fully supportive of this, and all the troops in the field too. Their putting their life in risk over there, but someone needs to get rid of the scum!

    In all 2009, the police seized around 4 tonnes of marijuana in the city

    During the last 5 days alone they seized over 40 tonnes, just in that favela

    They also seized a huge amount of guns, robbed motorbikes and cars that were used by the dealers.

    However, the top traffickers from that favela escaped. They are a lot less wealthy and armed now, so it will be hard for them to regroup and attack soon.
