Have you ever played LoL? If so, how slow is Valve's DOTA compared to it? I remember giving up on that game after a few minutes because it was too slow for my taste.
This = best DOTA mod ever

I think valve has hit the nail with dota 2. Its a perfect mix of old and new. Its as easy to get into as LoL was, but just as hard to master as HoN/Dota1 is. The heroes (all from dota1) makes it a very nostalgic experience for me and I think this will be my favourite game throghout 2012.
edit; steam name is http://steamcommunity.com/id/skjalg/

Oh oh! I would also like to team up with mapcorians! Be warned, I've played dota-style games for about 20 minutes (not joking here). But I watched "The International" and liked what I saw (kind of in the same way I did with Starcraft 2). So, let me know if you require noob backup anytime soon...

Funny thing, I got a copy of DOTA 2 for doing the Rise of the Immortals achievement. Can't really seem to get into this though. The controls just don't seem to make sense to me, must not be doing it right.

put one hand on the mouse, the other hand around the general qwerty area.
then right click on the mouse anywhere and your champion/hero will go there. Right click on an enemy and you will go to it and start attacking. left click any object and you can see its info in the down right corner.
click q, w, e, or r to use the abilities. If you dont like how the keys are set up you can rebind keys in the options.
How is this not sensible? Its like this in warcraft, starcraft, diablo, WoW, any other rts/mmo ive ever played that has heroes with abilities. I need to know what specifically didnt make sense to you.

The camera.
I can't seem to lock it to the hero like I could in Rise of the Immortals, and can't find a key for it in the control list. So I have to bounce my left hand between the qwerty area and the arrow keys constantly, because the camera doesn't zoom out very far at all. If the mouse gets to the edge of the screen it scrolls over, but it jerks so hard that I try and avoid it.
Also something that I find ridiculously frustrating is that I can't hold the right mouse button to continue to move in that direction, I have to constantly right click.
Also, I think it's strange that the off-shoots of DOTA have stuck to the RTS style controls when they don't necessarily seem beneficial to the gameplay, but just a hold over from the original mod.

double click on the hero's avatar image. or just change the mouse scrolling speed. why would you use arrow keys for that?

Because that is what the camera controls default to.
Edit: Again, I must not be playing the game right, because I can't figure out why you'd ever want the camera NOT centered on your hero.

to scout out distances, to use skillshot based abilities etc. it's a utility function that you need in a game like dota. clockwork's rocket ability or pudge's hook are just two examples of why you need it not centered. also i think recentering on hero key is c, which is also very useful.

I usually always scroll with the sides (and Ive turned up the speed so I dont have to waste so much time doing it).
If I want to go far i just click on the map.
If you are centered on your hero at all times, you will not be able to be as combat-aware as you can be now. It would be frustrating as hell when arrows and hooks come out of seemingly nothing because you are running a low resolution.
