And his own verdict on the quality of the final product? "I play everything," he said. "The last time I had a really solid experience like this was Half-Life 2."
For real
That's a bold statement. He's really doing his best to warn people that bad reviews don't necessarily mean it's a bad game (cos he knows it'll have shitty reviews).Gonna be a surprise... we'll see next week.

honestly, unless the rest of the game is better, if it sells well it'll prove everything bad about this industry

it will prove that you can tak a box, take a shit inside, close it, make a nice cover that everyone will love, and you will sell it as a best gift eva, or it will prove that ppl love DUKE so much

It seems to be released. Did anybody here play it? How is it?

I'm actually kind of enjoying it, though i may be the only one...i find myself thinking back to 15 years ago and imagining playing it then, i reckon it would have one of the games of that year. Compared to modern shooters though, it doesn't stand a chance. It's the sort of game they literally don't make any more, massive boss fights where you just have to strafe to avoid their fire, simplistic fighting with only two weapons at once, long load times every time you die (!) etc but it's kinda nice to play something so retro. I also like the immature humour throughout, though that just appeals to me naturally

Most of all i just find the game very interesting to play, having heard about it for the past however many years and it being the games development legend that it is. Worth picking up if you are at all curious, just don't expect a game of the year.

I just bought it! If any swedes want to buy it as well, but don't want to spend the full 50 euros on it, then you can buy it from here :

20 euro!

man the demo was brutal. They should not have deviated from the downtown nightscene of the original duke demo.
So many things are wrong with this. Someone needs to make a Duke classic mod to bring back the original gameplay.
-
I just played it for about an hour. Pretty bad if I'm honest. Everything feels so horrible forced. There's nothing duke about it I feel like I'm in some kind of poor man's tribute.

In before this fan-made remake of Duke3D using UDK is much better: http://www.dukenukemreloaded.com

Clearly the game isn't good. It's not awful, but it's not good.
It's just a big, narrow corridor full of scripted events with zero exploration and no rewards for doing so. I played it for almost two/three hours and sadly I'm already quite fed up with it.

What made DN3D great were, first of all, the amazing level design — secrets everywhere with powerups, weapons, etc, really rewarding the player for searching every nook and cranny; that's something you don't see often in games anymore — that fast paced and CHALLENGING action, the great music and of course the humor.
Here in DNF there's only the humor, and maybe the music, even if the latter doesn't really stand out. Duke is as over the top as ever and that's great. What I enjoyed were these interactions with the objects (water fountains, toilets, pinballs and all) and of course the little voice clips by Jon St. John that always crack me up (
Quotethe 'What the fuck?' line when Duke gets shrunk for the first time made me laugh out loud
). The game is also quite diverse, even if diversity doesn't necessarily mean quality (boring stationary turret action, for example).
But everything else is just a real bummer. You are set on rails and you can't take another path, since there's no other path. The game is so damn slow and the maximum number of enemies on screen I counted was around 5 or 6. And holy hell that auto health regen feature is frickin' crap. Why, oh why do game designers still use it? Return to medpacks already, or self-healing maybe. Health is a major resource in FPS and that auto health regen crap completely removes it. There's absolutely no challenge with this 'feature'. You just have to hide behind an obstacle, wait a bit and tadaaa, your health bar is full again! The fact that you can only carry two weapons at a time is a real let-down too. I mean why? Is there a good reason why we can't pick up more than two weapons at a time? And the worst thing concerning these weapons is that they have absolutely no feeling at all. That alien Pulse-rifle you obtain at the start feels like a plastic toy.
I don't know what the devs did to the controls in the PC version but they are godawful to say the least. The mouse suffers from a kind of mouse smoothing that is really damn annoying, and you can't even turn it off. The blur effect when you drink a beer to make you stronger is so bothersome, and if you use the Duke Vision at the same time (I had the misfortune of doing this at the beginning of the game) the result is quite simple: you can't see anything. Usually I hate blurring effects on-screen, so yeah.
Another thing that bothered me were these QTEs everywhere. Wanna open that door? Here's a QTE for you. And there's another door there. And another. The lift is falling? Yup, here's another QTE, man. And this checkpoint stuff on PC is a definite no-no. That was just a huge and unforgivable game design mistake guys. Give me my quick save/quick load back already.
I won't say much concerning the graphics, I found them okay. The Lady Killer palace is really nice actually. The game has some massive FPS drops though. My PC runs recent games pretty well, but with okay graphics I thought DNF would run a lot smoother. Guess I was wrong. I noticed that lights cause these drops, since I gain more than 25 fps (I'm not even joking) when it's pitch black.
Well that's just my opinion, but I can't really say I'm disappointed since I didn't expect a lot of this game anyway. Imma return to DN3D after I finish this game.
I agree with PaulH on the fact that if it had been released in 2001, I think it would have been a huge success. But now it just fails at almost everything, I'm really sorry to say this.

Oh another thing, I haven't tested the MP yet since nobody seems to be able to access it on PC yet (I didn't try for myself). If the devs did something like DN3D's it can be cool actually.
-
I have actually seen absolutely nothing from MP... have they demo:ed it at all?

In any case, this is probably not worth picking it up it seems...
-
It's like a fun 20,- indie game that you support because you believe the devs have lots of imagination and could do so much more with more money.
-
I finished it. And that was that.

I think the change in atmosphere from previous Duke games makes sense when you realize that the people who are making Duke Nukem Forever and the people who are buying Duke Nukem forever are the same exact people who bought and played the first games, almost a decade and a half later. DNF is quite literally a mid-life crisis. It's been fourteen years since the last time Duke did anything. He can't run as fast or as far as he used to. He can't carry as many guns as he used to. He can't take a bullet as well as he used to. The frat-boy sensibility about women from the previous games has darkened to a sense of fear and no small resentment (the pregnancy motif in the Alien level is important here- regretting having children, Duke?) The game's willingness to make fun of its protagonist even as it supports him is completely gone, because its desperate clawing after virility cannot tolerate that.
For a game sold as a comedy, it takes the fight to preserve the masculinity and youth of its main character incredibly seriously, not realizing that the fight is already lost. When a vehicle breaks down on Duke Nukem, he responds "Aw, and it got such good gas mileage." That is not a thing Schwarzenegger or Van Damme or Bruce Campbell would say in the films Duke Nukem is supposed to be parodying. That is a thing your dad says when the Volvo is beyond repair.
Duke Nukem Forever is a game about an aging sexually insecure man, made by an aging sexually insecure man, sold to an audience of aging sexually insecure men, which perfectly captures their anxieties. Duke Nukem Forever is art.
Haha.
