I watched the first 2 episodes of Better call Saul; they're good in their own terms regardless of the "remote" link to Breaking Bad. And I agree with Puddy: Jimmy currently is a "different" character from Saul, the one we know from breaking bad and it would be interesting to watch his metamorphosis along the episodes.

I donno, maybe I'm just not as big a fan of him as other people. I mean I like him in the context of Breaking Bad where he brought some humour when it might often be pretty dire and serious, though he was also a character that you generally felt a bit sorry for, but like I've said before then as a character from BB then it doesn't feel like a no-brainer to make a show about him either.
I guess my point is that just because it's a spinoff of BB then for me at least it still has to stand on it's own feet and earn it rather than just being full on fan service, though that said then nothing so far from the first episode indicates that it won't be able to do that.
I hear you. I really disliked him at first. But he grows on you. Kinda like a puppy. He keeps pissing on your carpet but he's just so funny you forgive him anyway.

I watched the first two episodes, #3 is out today I believe. I really enjoyed it, and it's definitely not as light-hearted as I was expecting. With Saul bringing a lot of the comic relief to Breaking Bad, I assumed this would play off of that — but so far it's actually not very far removed from Breaking Bad in terms of tone and drama, particularly that show's earlier episodes which saved a lot of the seriously hard-hitting darkness until much later.
I'm very interested to see whether or not Better Call Saul goes down the road of Breaking Bad and becomes extremely dark, or if it avoids going that far. A familiar character who appeared at the end of episode one brought a particularly tense edge to the show, immediately taking me back to when Breaking Bad 'got real'.
I didn't really appreciate in Breaking Bad that he was really just a persona/shtick, although looking back there were obvious signs that there was a different man lurking beneath. Seeing a good man lose his morality out of desperation is definitely revisiting the themes of Breaking Bad, but it's evidently going to be handled in a very different way.
Basically, a great start. I'm hooked already, and am really looking forward to seeing how the hybrid approach of this show plays out. As was made obvious from the very first scenes, this series (which has already been renewed for a second season by the way) takes place both before and after Breaking Bad using time jumps.
I'm just as excited to see where the post-BB Saul ends up, and it adds an extra level of tension to the show because obviously Saul couldn't die if it were purely a prequel — but anything goes in the post-BB world.

I agree the show is really really good. But I'm wondering how much of the show is going to be ruined or limited by the fact that we know how it ends. I can't stop thinking about that...

While we do know how it all "ends", I do believe this show is all about the journey, not the destination as I mentioned in my previous post.
Seeing the minute details (which Vince Giligan mastered in breaking Bad) of the transformation of Jimmy to Saul will be the real show.
I wouldn't worry about the show being "ruined" by the fact that we already know what will be of Saul in the end
; the first 2 episodes are a clear indication that it's goona be quite a journey ahead. -
Fuck. Episode 3 is so good.
I hate you and your talent Vince Gilligan.
-
I watched the first 2 episodes and I'm loving it. Like in BB, the (more or less) innocent character that's desperately trying to make ends meet and is getting more and more corrupted can be seen here, too
The cinematography is great - especially in the first episode. I'm hooked! -
After the first episode didn't really grip me I gave the second one a chance and actually loved it. I was actually laughing in RL
Quoteduring the scene with Tuco and Saul negotiating with those skaters lives
which I don't normally do when watching something alone.
Think I'll watch episode 3 tonight

-
Hyped to watch Episode 3 tonight as well

-
Watched ep 4 today, it's nowhere near as exciting as it started out! Still it's interesting, gonna get to the end at least.
-
I like it more and more with every episode. Had to get used to the slower pace first but the quirky characters are great. It starts to stand on its own legs.
-
I didn't realise this had started, good job my sister has netflix! *grabs popcorn*
-
Ok, I'll start to watch this serie soon

-
Well, we continued. The second half of season 4 is excellent. The finale is a masterpiece. Plus, Skylar is finally submissive and not that annoying anymore. I have to give mad props to the writers. It's all just so original and well thought out. Like everything is pure genius. How they handled the cartel for instance. Holy shit, that was good. We're now at season 5 episode 5.
QuoteI'm convinced that this will go down badly for everybody. There's simply no way that Hank won't figure out who Walt is and when he does, all hell will break loose I suppose. I don't see the partnership with Mike working out in the long run. While he's my favorite character I'm pretty sure he'll die. However, for some odd reason, I don't think it will be because of Walt. Can't explain why though. By now, I want to continue watching but it has become so dark. I'm convinced that everybody is going to die (Walt, Mike, Hank). Jessie will probably be the only one to survive just to fuck with him some more. Because boy, he really got a shitty deal. I feel for the guy. Also, Walt has become such an terrible cunt. Despicable really. Can't root for him anymore. In fact, he's become such a dick that I'm starting to feel bad for Skylar. That's saying something seeing how I despise her. I think she'll be left with her family and her sister when the empire finally collapses. The rest we are going to be bury. Jessie will probably end up in jail. I kinda wish it would have a happier ending but I just don't see that happening.
-
Yeah, I'm convinced that the central theme for the writers was to show how people change with money and power.

So Mike died. Not how I expected. Still, sad to see him go. Hank finally figured it out. I wonder what will happen next. I take it he will pressure Skylar but she can't say anything without incriminating herself and thus losing custody over her children. Maybe he'll try Pinkman seeing as how his guilt is eating him up. The prison massacre was awesome. Reminded me of Blood in Blood Out. Or Bound by Honor depending on where you live. With 7 episodes to go, I'm worried where it will end. Now it's time that Jessie finds out about Brock and stuff. I think it would be justice if he kills Walt. Because he ruined his life. I never expected Jessie, based on the first season, to be the voice of reason. The one with a conscience. Superb writing overall. I'll probably finish it somewhere this week. What a run. It's not the best show I every saw but it's close.
I heard it costs 3 million per episode to make. If that's true (afraid to Google in case of spoilers) I don't understand why. They shot it where they got good tax benefits. It's usually more character driven. There aren't any big set pieces, loads of action, CGI or whatever. Now, I understand nothing is free and the overall quality is excellent, but 3 million? Come on!
-
I love the transformation of Walt throughout the show.
This video shows it off really well.
Spoilers obviously.
QuoteSprony, I wish I was watching BB for the first time again. Enjoy the last few eps!
-
You're in for a Hell of a ride Sprony, enjoy it whilst it lasts.
I wish I could erase my memory and watch Breaking Bad again without knowing what will happen... plus 24, The X-Files and other cult classics....
-
3 million per episode sounds about right for a show of this quality and practical on site shooting, I'm assuming they do a lot of on location work, which is very expensive. Each season as the show becomes more popular the contracts of the actors are also renegotiated.
-
I've also finally watched this serie and, indeed it was awesome.
QuoteI learned how to hate a man I liked at the beginning of the show...they've succeed it on that point.
It's crazy to see how he changes and how he can't stop his activity even when the risks are high for him and his familly.Oh, and it brings me some ideas for my "arizona" map (yeah finally
