yeah it's not like it used to be, I'm kind of looking forward to getting back to mapping and doing much smaller/rougher projects again.

Because Half-life/Unreal/Quake comes with art assets many people don't have the tools or knowledge to make, but they do have the free level editor that came with the game. At least personally it's the real reason I was ever into mods- because it was something as an amateur I could actually do.
Edit: I agree with campaignjunky. While big total conversions are shrinking because the standards for them kept getting higher and higher, there's still lots of people making custom levels for tf2, UMC maps in SC2, stuff for Oblivion and Fallout 3, etc. Actually, the Bethesda games seems to me to be one of the single biggest modding communities, there's thousands of things on the Nexus sites. It's insane how much stuff gets made for those games.
