The other thing I was talking about (took a stab at an outdoor area). IMO Source doesnt do outdoors very well.

yeah it is flat but I like the tree shadows. . . is that an overlay? That's something I've always thought to do but never got around to doing.

although the grass texture is very flat the picture is still very nice, looks more realistic then most other games

I love the rainbow, good work

Lovely atmosphere too it, and entirely not recognisable as the source engine which is always a nice thing to say about a level (well, maybe not always!). Not too sure about the detail sprites to be honest though. I've never looked into them, but can you set a max distance on them? If so then it might be cool to have a fairly tight radius of pretty densely packed grass sprites. Dunno if you've tried that, but just an idea. Any particular reason for this scene by the way; part of a map or just screwing around?

    Screwin' around

I was messing with the detail sprites for around 2 hours trying to get the texture, size, color, density and type of sprite all set so that it looked good. What I posted was probably the best I could do (unless I went and created my own detail sprites, which I dont think would work well anyways).

Heres a picture of the soopa-dense grass:

As you can see, less is more

I think the problem is the grass sprite's color doesn't match the grass texture, at that density/opacity anway. Source doesn't do grass in any new way, and other games like BiA work really well with dense grass sprites, but the colors match.

Did you make the skybox/rainbow effect btw?

your green grass is way to saturated and the texture is way too big. The blacks in the texture makes more depth that needs to be, and compared to the saturation and over all brightness it causes it to look really bad. If your grass sprites matched the grass color for saturation, brightness, and hue you'd find it would look a lot more decent. Honestly look at more fields and realize that the highlights on the grass is way too much.

I did the rainbow but the skybox texture is from cs_militia.

And yes it doesnt look like a real field (as real fields arent super bright and yellow), but I still think it looks quite good. Ill see what I can do about the brightness of it. Also, the bright grass seems to give it a very vibrant felling.

Yeah it might look decent to others, but you really want to capture an image. From what we can tell realism is what you're trying to achieve. the over bright field is pushing it away from ever capturing that. Over saturation on the texture and light is killing your scene. Yeah it could look better, but that effect is better acheived with HDR in areas than over using it normaly.
