Those are called "mansarde" named after French architect François Mansart (though the Louvre, built 50 years before his time, already had similar designs) and are just a way to gain luminosity in attics, where all the royal servants were housed.

Right, Mansarde is the word .

    In German it's the "Dachgaube".

They've been common for 700 years, but for some reason totally limited to a few major cities in Franconia. Shows that for some 500 years Germany has been a headless chaos consisting of a thousand independent states that didn't care too much for each other .

Mmh.. alright, I'll shut up .

    @ Moroes:

    Looking sweet! Keep it coming!

Now come on, you of all people aren't going to tell me that'd bring performance down...You know better than that

That was not a supposition, that was his own words on MSN.

    Thanks all!!

Sure, I could add more details, but I want to make a simple map with high FPS! All the structures are kind of simple, but I'm sure you'll like it anyway! hehe

Here is my newest WIP map. Probably my best work so far:

    WIP thread:

    Name: De_archipelago

    Percent complete: 65%

    History of map:

Believe it or not, but this map has it's history. I originally started out with this:

    [Blocked Image: http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o67/nub…ction3-full.jpg]

As you can see, It has REALLY improved since. I believe that I started this thing in September of last year. That is the earliest I could find. That was version two, I called it "micro_island." The very original had no rock Arch or any rock clusters out in the distance, it was just a single, tiny island with an inaccessible house. Now, it's a cluster of islands, with custom content, HDR lighting, and tactical properties. Hopefully the map will be finished by May 23rd, as that is the last day of school here for me. During the summer, I have to get cracking on one large atoll with a lagoon in it.

    Hey again,

importing another set of changes Killertomato suggested .

Oh and some people said it was a shame to not let the map play at nighttime, so I just gave that a try.

Although my opinion on night time maps is that players don't accept them very well, I must say I'm feeling rather comfy in the athmosphere they transport...

As I said, it's just an experiment of an early WIP - texture alignment and detail brushwork in some of those spots hasn't finished or even happened yet.

At least it would be original, kind of...

Change the lights to a more orange hue instead of yellow.

Lighting is much better, but its really toooo yellow, isnt it?

insta got the point, do them more orange and it will look amazing

EDIT: Where the sign reads "Druckarbeiten" i always read "Drecksarbeiten" at first

New lighting stinks in my opinion. The color is too saturated. Its too contrasty. Looks like an old school unreal map rather then a polished radiosity driven map.

I liked your first lighting teh best. This looks indeed too saturated. Too yellow.

However, I DO really think you've come a hell of a long way brushwise. Great to it improve so much. I think you're going to be one son of gun LD'er.

i've started working on the first map in my l4d campaign (the 2nd is the cablecar station i posted screens of in here months ago). the second screen still needs a lot more detail, but it's supposed to be a restaurant area behind the main building.
