I have completely the opposite opinion, film was great, the creature effects sucked ulcerous pustulating ballsacks but all the other effects were great.

    The characters were

    Quote

poorly fleshed out, Charlie was also kind of a dick so his death which should have been this major dramatic moment was instead a quickly brushed over scene that just had no emotional effect at all other than cementing the already well established fact that the bitch-lady was a bitch. With so many cast members it's hardly surprising that they didn't have any character, they should have halved the crew size. It felt like the only character that was actually worth caring about was the only character not human

    The last 30 seconds

    Quote

needs to be cut from the film, I cannot fathom why anyone in the whole production thought it was a good idea. Alien fan service was already done, it was just unnecessary and terribly done, it's jaw changed shape.. what the fuck? Wouldn't have been nearly as bad id it had just growled but the bone-breaking jaw shape change is just a terrible effect used in terrible films, not something I'd expect from a serious film.

    As a whole experience,

    Quote

it was a bit all over the place with all manner of different creatures and unexplained shit going on (Anything and everything vase-related)

but it was a great film and makes it to #3 in the Alien franchise for me somewhere miles above A3 and A:R but definitely below Aliens (Alien obviously being the best)

Overall, go into it expecting it to be good but not mind blowing and you'll probably not be disappointed.

With regards to the 3D (IMAX at least) it was incredibly well shot and natural feeling, The Hobbit trailer played beforehand was a bit disorientating as it was quite depthy and had lots of quick shot changes with radically different depths but I think the 3D was shot much better for Prometheus and just felt natural and right the whole way through. at no point did they do any waggle shit in front of your face crap and the introductory helicopter shots over landscapes were magnificent. Prometheus in IMAX 3D is a perfect trump card in arguments against 3D naysayers.

EDIT: The ONLY thought going through my mind in that scene with the

    Jockey/Engineer and the squid

    was

I've seen enough hentai to know where THIS is going

the horror inside me grew to such proportions I actually twitched at the thought

I just came back. The camera work is amazing, beautiful shots and incredible set design. The acting is superb. It's a very intelligent sci fi movie and it also has great tension throughout the entire movie. Lots of questions get answered but even more get raised. I doubt it will become the classic that Alien is. But nevertheless, definitely worth your money.

The only negatives for me are the script, which isn't bad but could be much better. Also, most characters are rather shallow. I give it a 8.5!

Just watched it. I'd give it a 2 out of 5. It just wasn't something special unfortunately.

I'm too tired to go into detail right now, but the film's main problem is that it's a bit all over the place - atleast in my opinion. Characters and monster variations are thrown at the viewer in a heavy-handed manner and at the same time the film doesn't really know what kind of genre it will land in or what the focus of the film is. Are you guys with me on this one?

What Skacky said. Taste differs of course but calling this really bad or terrible is just silly. It isn't. Yes, it could have been better and yes, some stuff is incoherent. But overall it's a decent movie. Not the classic we hoped for but certainly not awful imo.

It also seems that people have misinterpreted things.

    Quote

As stated above, it's not on LV-426. It's one of the space jockeys military installations where they create biological weapons. As always, the 'aliens' adept to there host. That's why we see different forms. Also, the ending refers to the original alien, but remember that Prometheus was meant to be the first of two movies. In the second we change the alien to the form we have come to love and sent it to the space jockeys to give them a piece of there own medicine. At least, that's what they stated in the original synopsis.

Lots of questions do get answered. We get to see the space jockeys, we get to see the origin of the alien, we are given the reason why the Weyland corporation set out to find them and what would later evolve into the company's obsession. We also get to see the first generation of androids, the reason why the ships computer in Alien is called mother, etc.

Also, the invitation was exactly a test. Because if we got smart enough to find them, we have become a threat. That's why the ship was headed for earth. The whole fate thing is a reference to our place in the universe and what we choose to believe in.

The things that bothered me are how they started life on earth. I mean, why did he need to sacrifice himself? It was a gruesome and on logical death. There was no room for character development and some of the crew were mere canon fodder. It was also retarded that the the biology dude touched the 'cobra' and the flight crew seemed really happy to sacrifice themselves. It's also not clear on why the android infected the doctor and the fact that he was still able to function after he got ripped apart. Last but not least, if you do an abortion on yourself [cool scene btw] you shouldn't be able to run around like she did.

    Youme:

    Quote

You do relealise that it was supposed to be the Queen right? You see a reference to her in the installation, That's why she got an egg and the fucked up jaw.

Sorry Puddy, I'm not with you.

    Quote

It should have helped if they ended with 'To be continued'.

Oh well, perhaps I just read too much the last couple of years for me to be objective. Knowing the above probably elevated the experience for me

Yeah I'm with you on that Puddy. The characters are all under-developed and their reactions and behavior are stupid and make no sense whatsoever. The movie seems more like it is a mish-mash of different cool scenes that are thrown together with a nonsensical plot to sew them, making them look stupid.

I'm sorry if I'm harsh or whatever, but I came back from the theater pretty pissed-off. Still, I think Prometheus is still better than Alien 3, it's actually difficult to do any worse when it comes to plot.

Damnit, 2D showing at 8:20pm and it's bloody packed, we had to sit at the front.. I have neck ache

    Anyway;

It was good but it wasn't great, for me it seemed like it went too fast which is ridiculous when you consider it's two hours long. Some scenes could have been cut or re-arranged like

    Quote

that daft scene where Charlie's character flirts with Idris Elba.. what was the point of that?

. Characters were boring and I agree totally that they should have been halfed. The storyline was just daft...

    Quote

    aliens making biological weapons?

and I was really disappointed with

    Quote

the space jockeys.. I mean they're only a little larger than the humans... the one in Alien was massive!

. That ending... oh dear, after all we got I didn't expect that to happen.

    Quote

    "Sequel" then?

. Effects were very good but then I'd expect no less in a big-budget film in 2012...

    It'd give it 7/10...

SPOILERIFIC PUDDY RANT INCOMING - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Let me start off by saying that I actually consider Prometheus to be a pretty bad film. It wasn't dreadful, but the film had such untapped potential and it is, after all, an off-shoot to one of the best sci-fi films in history. Can we ignore such legacy when judging the film? I simply can't. And in order to fully process the film, I have to do a bit of ranting.

Let's start of with what I consider the main focus of the film; the grandiose theme of creation, creaters, origins and so on. Did the film ever properly handle these subjects? The "Engineer"-fueled story of creation didn't really catch my interest at all and it was never fully explored and it was never given some sort of climax or closure. They came to earth, created building blocks for life, then gave humans a star-map to a weapons facility which purpose is to destroy humans - hmm, okay? Did I miss something? There were too many gaps in the film for the audience to see some purpose or reason for the actions the engineers took. All the answers can't be left for a may-or-may-not-be sequel. For example, the film could've explaind why the engineers created humans, but at the same time not revealing why the engineers decided against our existence at a later point. You have to give the viewers something in my opinion. Unless of course these kind of questions AREN'T the focus of the film, which was the case in the original Alien (the origin/nature of the creature was never explained and it was okay).

Parallell to this "seed of life"-tale of creation, we follow the quest for answers by, primarily, Holloway, Shaw and Weyland. The main thing I can remember in this part of the story is that they played up tensions between science and faith in a very un-subtle and uninteresting way. The "big" questions which the film was supposed to dissect were also poorly treated. Let me quote the film: "THE BIG QUESTIONS, WHERE DO WE COME FROM, WHAT CREATED US, WHY ARE WE HERE... HEY AUDIENCE, LISTEN UP, THIS IS FUCKING DEEP SHIT!!!". The questions were repeated in various forms by different characters, like a mantra almost. The interesting answers, or inquiries, were nowhere to be seen. And since part of the puzzle involves the uninteresting engineer story arc, the big questions lose part of their weight.

The characters were pretty bland, with a few exceptions. They were, in order of quality; David, Shaw, Vickers. Fassbender was magnificient as David. I'll leave the elegant descriptions of why he did such a good job to professional movie reviewers, but if you've seen the film such descriptions aren't really necessary; Fassbender's performance is captivating and the character is interesting. It's that simple. Noomi Rapace does a good job portraying Shaw, but she isn't as consistent as Fassbender and since the sub-par treatment of the "big questions" is a big part of her character, there's a limit to how interesting she can be. Vickers wasn't that great, but compared to the remaining cast she stands out with a few good moments and Theron manages to portray her as authoritative and assertive, without making Vickers feel robotic or two-dimensional. Fifield was actually pretty okay too when I come to think of it. But the rest of crew were either not fully introduced, uninteresting or plain bad. Cringe-worthy dialogue was provided by almost everyone.

Anyway, let us turn to the actual events in the film, as in the journey of Prometheus and it's crew. The premise was setup pretty okay, with a nice build-up that made it clear that this was no ordinary mission and that Shaw and Holloway's discovery had a lot of gravity. Anticipation was definitely building up as they discussed what they may find on that moon. The fact that they were discussing the seeded creation of life on earth, ancient civilizations and so forth painfully reminded me of "Mission to Mars". Still, it wasn't a deal breaker. Instead, it is some time after their arrival on the moon that things began to fall apart for me. I mean, do you remember Alien? Remember the pacing? The signal. Some sort of ship. A dead pilot. Leathery eggs. The way the audience was invited to try and understand the creature attached to that poor man's face. Ash's fascination with it. Marvellous stuff. And nothing like the pacing in Prometheus, which just flatlined the moment they entered that facility after landing. There were hints of tension, small peaks of suspense that lasted very briefly. There were a lot of details, minor twists and events that tried to gain the viewer's attention. I won't even bother commenting them. "Blablabla...... father" etc. Yuck. As the story progressed, it became increasingly clear that this trend of having no true thrills or any form of apex would maintain. And a lot of it can be traced to the lack of a well-defined, interesting antagonist. As I mentioned earlier, the engineers storyline is underdeveloped and their motives are too unexplored for them to constitute an interesting adversary. As for the various creature variations, well, they were all over the place and they never became this lurking menace in the dark which the original alien truly was. They were just goo-spawned randomness, basically. In any case, the crew realizes the nature of the place, gets killed off one by one by various mutants/the engineer and Shaw ultimately survives the whole ordeal and just hijacks an alien ship together with a decapitated David to ride off into the sunset in the search of insterstellar voldemorts which she hopes can provide her with "answers". Yeah, sounds fucking great.

    Meh.

Haven't read what you fellas have said, but I really liked it. There were definitely things I didn't like about it

    Quote

(The end, the religious themes and in part the story with human life being engineered by the alien human dudes...well, most of the story stuff TBH

). But as a whole I had a great time with it, the entire style and look of the movie alone is worth the price of admission in my book. And yeah, it might be derivative of Alien in a lot of ways, but I actually think it brought enough new stuff to the table to warrant it's existence (speaking of table, the operating table scene was fucking amazing!).

Anyway, way better than what I expected (even if I just expected a visual feast), though definitely not perfect. An absolute must watch if you like sci-fi~

Saw Aliens a couple months ago and found it pretty lackluster, James Cameron was written all over it.

This one seemed to be on the same level, loads of clichés, hollywood plot. Still enjoyable though just a bit thin.

(Oh and the 3D was off again, never going to this cinema ever again. /rant)

Serious question: What were you guys expecting? I'm not that surprised tbh.
